I applaud your motives. However, I doubt that would be sufficient.

Lazarus Project 2.0. Enough said.
The Lazarus project requires a body to repair. If Shep is nothing but radioactive dust (like the Reapers will be by the time my Shep's done with them) there can be no resurrection...
That's why it's 2.0. Original corpse not required. Cue opening cutscene: body in a vat.

Always remember, making sense is optional.

Yes.
Hell yes.
ABSOLUTELY YES.

If you even have to ask why, I direct you to the example of one Master Chief Petty Officer John-117.

If Shepard does not die, Shepard will star in Mass Effect 4, made by someone else than Bioware, then you will all, without fail, wish that Bioware had the guts to kill him definitively in Mass Effect 3.

So yes, Commander Shepard does indeed have to die.
Or ends up as a Faction Boss in a Mass Effect MMO.

Oh God...

I'd almost have to say that Shepard shouldn't die in ME3. I mean...he already died in ME2. If you kill then resurrect a character, then killing them again just doesn't seem to have the same meaning anymore..

In short.

Does he/she have to die? No. I really doubt that BioWare is going to force their consumers and fans to kill off a character that some have been with for over several years. It doesn't seem likely. BioWare has admitted that there are multiple endings that are all quite different from each other. If they say that I'm sure they would at least have to make one ending in which Shepard survives.

So, no, I don't think Commander Shepard has to die. But will there be an ending where he/she does die? Yes, no doubt about it.

He doesn't have to die.

However, he should.

It seems a bit silly to end a story arc with a character and keep them around, because at this point; why wouldn't Shepard be saving the universe from whatever issue comes next?

People also seem to be citing a Lazarus 2.0, but they don't have the money Cerberus was able to pull to get the project done anymore, as it's been said that they'll be your enemy this time around, why would they revive him again? Alliance sure as hell won't do it, they spent half of Mass Effect 1 questioning the Normandy's performance versus it's price point.

Still, knowing how Bioware is, there will be a Shepard dies ending, and at least another one where Shepard runs off with [lover here] into the sunset.

They'd just put him back together again like Space Marine Humpty Dumpty. It'll be fine.
HA. Made me chuckle. :3

No. I want him to retire and become a cattle farmer on some backwater planet. That's how a true hero's tale ends. Not in a blaze of glory, but knee-deep in shit.
That would certainly be interesting. Send him to one of the planets he basically destroyed for resources in ME2 where he finds a new race of aliens slowly dying due to lack of resources and an abundance of probes covering the land. :D This could be used as a sort of "Your actions really do have consequences!"

I think another fitting ending would be if Shepard survives the mission only to die of space STDs since he or she decided to sleep with too many alien men and/or women after saving the galaxy. Then a public campaign is launched to be aware of space STDs. However, the campaign goes horribly awry when the initial founder is kidnapped and replaced. The new founders, Mr. and Mrs. Belle, change the message of the public campaign to a message of stopping inter-species relations. Mr. and Mrs. Belle blame the aliens for Shepard's death and have caused a division in the universe. The two camps being people for inter-species relations and people against inter-species relations.

*Dramatic transition to the streets of Omega* *Pan and zoom into one of the apartment buildings* There is a young Asari about to mate with a lover of a different species. Suddenly, a crazed Batarian, clad in Blue Suns uniform, barges in the house and fires wildly into the ceiling. The young Asari reacts quickly and fire a few rounds from the pistol on a desk next to the bed. The young Asari says "It seems they've found us..." *fade to black*

Then Bioware could work with that and flesh it out into a full game where we don't have to play as a human in the universe of Mass Effect.

If this is all considered off topic then...
OT: No I don't think Shepard should die. It's still nice to have the choice I suppose as long as they don't use that possibility as a punishment for not being fully Paragon/Renegade.

I think it's pretty likely that the final choice will be something like "Choose between dying and saving lots of lives or living and being a douchebag" or maybe it will be like the ME2 suicide mission where your performance determines your fate.

The game is based around choice, and if they made him die then it would be the worst in the series by far.
I may play good shep, but hell be dammed am I dying for anyone.

Die? Commander Awesome Shepard can never die, as he is too awesome. In fact, in addition to his first name being Awesome, his middle name is also Awesome, just so he can say "Awesome is my middle name". Don't know about you guys and your characters that aren't called Commander Awesome Awesome Shepard though.

No because little blue children/ copious amounts of Quarian sexy time. I need not say more. I will be pissed if the only Paragon ending is heroic sacrifice. I WANT TO LIVE!

yes, yes and yes:)

I don't think he has to die. An awesome ending would be when all is said and done, he is standing on the bridge of the Normandy when a call comes in that a local colony needs help. Shepard turns to Joker and says...

"Set course, there are some people that need saving."

Fade to black.

I've deliberately played through Mass Effect 1 and 2 only once. The reason is that I have a unique experience with that character. I'm really attached to my Shepard, I've decided how he will look like, what kind of person he is, what choices he does in certain situations and so on. You may call it cheesy but because I like my character so much now, I actually want to him to survive this trilogy. It would give me a good feeling, knowing that he saved the galaxy and is still alive.

No. Conversely, he doesn't have to survive either. I'm hoping there will be good/bad ending for Shepard surviving or dying.
