Well, it's only 4 letters, LGBT (lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender). That covers all bases (though I'm not sure why you can't condense lesbian and gay). And really, isn't using a microbe of effort so as not to offend someone worthwhile? I mean, LGBT is shorter than saying gay, straight and bi as you did.
Edit: Oh yeah, forgot a rather important point. Gender confusion and transexuality is very, very different to sexuality. A man who wants to be a woman (or vice versa) isn't necessarily gay, which is why you have to class them seperately.
