I think my favorite thread of all time has been created.

I am a lover of dragons because I am a dragon. Dragons are literally my favorite thing ever. I cannot think of anything cooler to exist (yes they exist, for my theories on where they are see further down). In fact, it is my belief (and I use that term very loosely) that time was created when a time and space transcending dragon breathed, time is just us riding the wave of that great dragon's breathing.

Now for Fightgarr's theory on the locational displacement and disappearance of dragons:

Dragons (or at least equivalent beings) have been seen in the mythologies of almost every culture in the world. This must mean that dragons have some truth to them, correct? But why don't we ever see them anymore? Fightgarr has some theories. Here they are:

Theory 1 - They can transcend space
Dragons are awesomely powerful... they can probably teleport, or enter other dimensions or some awesome shit like that. They're pretty awesome that way. This is why we can't find them.

Theory 2 - They can transcend time
Like I said before dragons are fucking powerful... they either built a time machine or can travel through time by way of their wicked powers. In this way they are effectively extinct, which brings me to theory #3.

Theory 3 - They are extinct
This would be very sad but is a possibility we must potentially face. You know who I blame for this? YOU!!

Theory 4 - They're still in the wild
It was usually believed that dragons lived in wilderness areas. It is possible that they live so deep underground, in the ocean or in the woods that we cannot find them. Either that, or they are very elusive in the woods. Probably hanging out with bigfoot or something.

Theory 5 - They live among us
This one has three sub-theories. Number 1: they live in the sewers (not likely). Number 2: they are invisible (also unlikely, we'd accidentally run into them too much). Number 3: They can turn into humans (this one is the most likely, their powers are awesome sometimes).

Theory 6 - They were displaced into space
Dragons may have either moved into space or have always lived there. Awesome... SPACE DRAGONS!!!

EDIT: Can anyone tell I really fucking love dragons!?

Smaug the Dragon was the original badass monster for me, as the Hobbit was the first novel length book I ever read.

Even now I still enjoy reading the sections with him in it. He's such a smug asshole, and he knows that he could murder the entire world if he felt like it.
This is why I am so stoked for the new Hobbit movie! Smaug will be so damn awesome. :)

Smaug.

All that needs to be said.
This. I mean, how can any dragon compare himself to the fictional best? Smaug is pretty much top of the list for excellent fictional dragons and I doubt any dragon dreamt up by anyone can ever come close.

The Hobbit: 2012.

I also agree with you. He is the modern archetype for evil intelligent Dragons. Tolkien really did a good job writing that character. I actually disliked Bard the first time I read the Hobbit when I was a kid. He killed Smaug and I was mad.

This thread almost made me cry.
I was never closer to anyone, then of my buddies whom I hung out with almost daily. He loved dragons. Had eight million statues, three swords with dragon hilts, four different D&D chromatic and metallic dragon posters, 3 Aspect of Bahaumut miniatures, 4 Tiamats, eight trillion dragons, a colossal Red Dragon Mini (not really mini) a Gargantuan black, blue, and white dragons.
And the list goes on. He had to move to Oregon after high school, and I miss him so.
This guy sounds like my hero. Actually.

Incredibly so. So much so that I believe I will buy myself a new dragon figurine tomorrow to add to my collection.

Damn I am so poor right now.... :(

I am proud that my nine year old daughter is a Dragon loving geek too. She loves Dragons so much last Christmas we got her those Dragon books that study Dragon lore, living environments, behavior patterns and the like. She knows that they are all in fun but she reads them all the time. :)

I guess she is like Erana in that fashion. She draws Dragons all the time and has for years now. I have a large picture of a Black Dragon she drew right next o my desk. :)

Beyond hero. This guy is my new idol, and I aspire to someday have half as awesome a collection as that. Then I can die happy.

Back when I was a kid I read Jeremy Thatcher, Dragon Hatcher. That story was so cool, I couldn't help getting hooked on dragons. I love reading anything with them, whether they are enemies, companions, or just hanging out. Heck, I have 6 dragons sitting on my desk right now, and more in another room. They just have so many attributes that scream "Kick ass!" Sadly, most video games that feature them portray them as enemies, I'd like to see a few where they are allies, or can be allies.
Hee hee, this sounds like a personal ad "SMD ISO SFD for companionship, burninating, and just hanging out. Must like roast knight. Fire Breath a plus."

"Meh." I find them too overused. Gryffons or Krakens or something are the wave of the future, until they flood the future upon which either dragons shall make a comeback or some other mythical creature shall become the wave of the future's future!

Anyone here ever seen the "documentary" movie called Dragons World? A take on how a "real" dragon would be able to exist.

If we are talking of original dragons and Smaug, then I must tell you that Tolkien more or less just copied Fafner from the Nordic myth of Sigurd Fafners Bane (not that it makes Tolkien or Smaug less awesome).
I have loved dragons more or less as long as I can remember and my favorite fictional dragons are: Glaurung and Kalessin. (Automatic internet cookies to those who know where the last one is from)

I had a dragon once...his name was Snickers. He loved burninating the peaceful countrysides. But when he started burninating peasants, I had to put him down. He was coolest dragon ever, even cooler than that one voiced by Sean Connery.

Tolkien took A LOT from Nordic culture.
Heh, that he did indeed. Nordic, celtic and christian mythology are all blended together in his Middleearth stories. There are other mythologies mixed in as well, but can't remember which ones.

No, this is not about 'Oh, where do you think they're hiding? Let's go hunting!' This more of, 'Hey! We like dragons! We should talk about why we like them or something cool involving them!'

Anyone else like dragons? I like them because I like reptiles even though they have the Grim Reaper on speed dial in case I touch them. Having them fly around would brighten anyone's day.
In the recent events I found that Dragon-stuff is sort of "Girly"-stuff. Girls put me off the topic for good.
Really? Liking dragons as a little girl got me socially ostracized by all but the few other weird people...
In my university [ in Poland ] what girl I asked the question "You like Dragons?" she went "Hell yeah". Every girl loves them ( maybe ), like barbies.

Can you recall how many you have in all? I have 18 if you count my painting.
Only 18? Shit, I have well over 30 stuffed dragons alone. Then there's the sculptures/trinkets, and this HUGE halloween mask that's literally a full dragon head (roughly 2.5ft in height with the chest plate)...

Yeah, I kinda sorta maybe like dragons.
I live in a small-ish town without these dragon shops and every time I shop online, it ends in disaster. Or fire.
