I am planning on buying a new DS with the money I get at Christmas this year (I have a really old original DS and the screen is chipped so I figured its about time I upgraded), and I'm wondering if I should get a Lite or spend the extra cash to get a DSi for the Online store and built in internet.

BUY THE DSi!!!!! I bought it and it blew me away how great it was!!!!! comparing it to the ds lite is like comparing a super soaker to a bazooka!!!! seriously though, the DS lite is an inferior piece of equipment when compared to anything on the market. dsi is BEYOND any other handheld system! I put off getting a 360 to buy it!
DSi shop sucks, way worse than Wii Shop, which isn't too bad. The games on DSi shop are a rip off. The crap games cost about £2 (4USD), gameboy games such as Dr. Mario will cost about £4.50 (9USD), then DSi's equivalent of Wii Ware will set you back £7.20 (14.40USD).
Lite, camera of the DSi is shit, the store takes ages to load and the inability to play GBA games kills it

Honestly, the lite is enough. I only have a DSi because that's what a friend traded me for a load of wow gold.

no, the gameboy micro. I got mine for 30 bucks and works like a charm. Good GBA games still out there. Smaller then the DSi or lite. Worth looking into. But if your die hard on getting a DS, then go with a lite

Well, if you have GBA games that you want to play again (unless you still have a GBA it self), I suggest a Lite.
