Subs. Very, very few dubbers can capture the same effect as the original voice acting.
Making the presumption that you don't speak Japanese, I'm confused as to what voice acting in a language you don't understand is worth. If you can't understand the language I don't see how the voice acting can effect you the way it would effect someone who can understand the language.

That's strange. There's a very similar thread on the front page. Very similar. This is on the same day that I saw two threads about vegetarianism on the front page literally adjacent to each other. Anyway, I almost always prefer subtitles, because more often the dubs are far worse than the subs in any case.

The tone is, I would say, as important as what is being said.

EDIT: WAIT, THERE IS ANOTHER SIMILAR THREAD ON THE FRONT PAGE. WHAT IS GOING ON HERE.

First, that presumption is at least partially wrong. Second, even if I didn't know Japanese, I would still understand what the characters were saying in the context of the subtitles. Third, the human voice has the same basic properties no matter what language it's spoken in. One can still cry their eyes out at well-performed heartbroken gibberish (WALL-E, anyone?). Giving a damn about a completely monotone delivery is a bit less feasible, no matter how fluently you speak the language.

I prefer to stick to subs since theres actually a certain appeal to hearing the characters in their original voices since it generally matches the situation better, plus subs keep you involved in the action and make it easier to catch every word, since english dubbed things I sometimes accidentally tone out characters talking randomly, especially if I hate them..such as that crazy rapist chick with black hair who starts to show up in the second half of lucky star. hate dat betch. lol

ALWAYS subtitles.

Dubbing not only makes films completely goofy because of the fake accents and bad lip sync, but also because it takes so much away from an actors talent.

As English isn't my maternal tongue, I got used to subtitles early on (only children's programs are dubbed in Norway). I really prefer it to dubbing, because it just plain fits better with the original language. Also, growing up with tons of subbed films, series, games, etc, thought me more about the English language than any teacher ever did, and occasionally I pick up some Japanese, French, German or whatever language is spoken. Not a lot, but better than nothing. (Also, I'm not trying to brag here, but I read extremely fast, so it's a rare occasion indeed when I don't finish reading the sub before it's gone.)

Subbed... and not just in anime.

...with very few exceptions of course. Cowboy Bebop is one anime where the dub is actually more fun to watch than the sub.

Actually... When I can, I turn subtitles on even when watching things in English. That way I don't miss anything that is said due to whispering/mumbling/background noise.

Subbed for me. When I have the choice, I'll always pick subbed.
People say things like they'll miss the action, or something else, because they're reading. I've never had that problem. I mean, unless I'm reading the subs from literally only a few centremeters away from the screen, I always catch the other stuff with my peripheral vision. It's really not that hard.

Maybe that's just me, but I haven't missed anything just because there're subs on the screen. :S

Subbed. I struggle to enjoy anything dubbed because the movements don't match up with the dialogue, and often times the actual dialogue is changed. Plus, I love Japanese.

Although I hate taking my eyes off the scene to read the subs, I'll choose them any day.

Don't really care too much. Some anime I prefer the dub (Cowboy Bebop), but i'll go for the sub for just about anything else.

Dubbed so I don't have to read the damn screen and miss half the content when I stop paying attention for a second and am forced to rewind and re read it... yeah so because it's more convenient...

I usually prefer dubs.

However, normally for an anime that I get really into I watch it subbed. Sometimes however, there are certain plot points that I don't exactly grasp right away. Thus when the anime gets dubbed, its a great relief to me. I end up going, "Oh thats is what character X meant/did. Duh".

Plus you know, its nice hearing it in my own language. But I will say I love the crazy japanese laughter that happens in most anime. Totally over the top and insane. Course that doesn't mean I don't appreciate the dubbed version!

As for movies, I tend to have the subtitles on. Makes things easier for a movie if the characters are mumbling a lot or I can't have the volume too loud. Subtitles also helped me understand the Lord of the Rings: Fellowship of the Ring.

But yes, I enjoy the subs, but I like to watch dubs.

I don't watch much anime but when I do it has to be dubbed; I can't read 20 words in 2 seconds. If I have to watch subbed, it will take twice the time because I have to stop and start to read the subs.

If I can't find dubbed, I won't watch it. If it hadn't been dubbed, I wouldn't have known the awesomeness of Baccano! Now that was a great series. I actually did go back to see what the original voice acting was like on it, and I have to say, I like the English voices better.

Shame there's no "depends" Option. I watched Hellsing, and Ghosts in the Shell Dubbed, Prefered Gungrave dubbed, but watched Code Geass, TTGL, Needless (Granted there was no dubb for Needless at the time) and Bleach Subbed, with all my new anime being subbed now.

There also needs to be a "Anime vs Manga" option (Granted search button could probably lead me there instanly but I don't feel like it) as I muched preferred Death Note Manga then Death Note anime.

I always prefer subbed unless the dub is really good.
The only dub I've deemed "good enough" so far is the Ghost in the shell S.A.C.
