Poll: Dubbed or Subbed?

Subbed, because I apparently have amazingly good peripheral vision, so much so that I can watch both the animation and the text...

That, and it's cool to try and learn the language.

Yeah, I still have no idea how I can pay attention to the action and subs at the same time, it all seems to blend in together.
(and yes, I realize that your vision actually has a ~3 degree radius of viewing and peripheral vision is not to be underestimated, but I would still think subs would be distracting).

i prefer dubbed for two main reasons.

1. i really dont want to have to stare at the bottom of the screen throughout an entire show or movie, especially if there is some kind of action going on that i should be seeing without interference

2. i often find that the english dubs include voices that match the characters look more than the original voices do.

Well, for me it depends usually on how many female characters there are and how old they are... If they are young, theres a high chance they are going to sound incredibly annoying in english, so I prefer subbed... Plus I can't wait the 2 to 3 years it takes for it to be translated into english...

But there are still a few shows that I must watched dubbed... Mostly stuff that founds its way onto western TV... They occasionally got good dubs... some are superior to their original versions...

i much prefer dubbed. and i mean decent dubbed. with subs i spend the whole episode watching the bottom 1/4 of the screen. i might as well have just read the shows script instead. so i prefer dubbed so that i can actually watch the show.

I will watch a dub if I think its good; I will watch subs if the dub sucks or there isnt one.

Dubs are horrible, Especially American. It's like they're picking up kids from the street and selecting a random character for them to dub regardless of role, age and gender.
And the Hentai... Oh the horrible, horrible dubs in hentai...

Well, I used to be firmly against dubbed movies and anime, and insisted they were far better with original language + subtitles. But I recently re-watched Gantz and Elfen Lied with both the english language track and english subtitles on and my god, the english language versions kicks the shit out of the japanese + subs versions! The english acting and writing make the subtitled versions look like piles of poorly translated garbage.

So, which do you prefer, dubbed or subbed, and have you seen any other examples where the english language version is superior to the subtitled version?

Depends on the anime. 10 minutes with the sub on some animes and i want to kill myself, same with dubs on some others.

It really depends heavily on which anime I watch,but most of all with a very few exceptions I enjoy them subbed with the original language.

It's a toss up. Usually there is a lot lost when they try to translate anime and dub it. But I also like being able to know whats being said without focusing on the bottom few inches of the screen.

though i have come across a few good dubs for the most part dubs can be painful to watch and this is mainly due to the fact that voice actors are not held in high regard in the US and as such the product tends to be of lower quality to the original. That and the fact that they like to localize references way more than subers do are the main reasons that i prefer subs.

Subbed. I don't understand japanese, so bad acting can be majorly forgiven, where it would otherwise ruin the show for me.

...Except with Cowboy Bebop. Steve Blum will always be Spike to me. I dunno if it's just nostalgia, but the japanese voices irritate me in that show. I think there was just a good synergy there. I didn't like him in Samurai Champloo at all, on the other hand, so I always watch that Subbed.

I think a big problem with dubbing for me is that I begin to recognize the same english voices over and over again. There just aren't enough voice actors out there, I guess.

For anime, dubs are very rarely not complete shit, but reading subtitles while listening to dialog I can't understand is just as shit.

I think I'm gonna choose dubs exclusively because of MXC (on a related note, I recently discovered all five seasons are on Amazon and am tempted to buy them all because I absolutely loved that show).

Dubs unless it is so awful that I need to switch to Subs. But... if its that bad, chances are I don't like the anime itself, and so I quickly move on to something else.

As it has been said by many before me, subbed is the way to go unless the dub is very well done like FMA Brotherhood. Even then, I was forced to the subs. Awesome story + Impatience to know what happens next > My discomfort over the Japanese voices sounding like those from Bleach mostly

Just to contribute though, I feel Death Note should be on the short list of the good dubs. The voice actor for Light catches the maniacal tone pretty well in my opinion.

I have developed a system for dubbing, actually. It has to do with my local anime club. If I watched a show originally subbed because of the club and all, then I'm inclined to remember it as I watched it and follow suit for me DVDs. Well, there are exceptions. I decided to leave Baccano in sub, but that was due to its attachment to Durarara, which I'd also seen subbed. However, if this is something new that I never experienced before, I'm inclined to give the english cast their due. They're hard workers and nice people besides, and definitely with talent. It all depends on how I was exposed to it.

I can't stand dubbed versions of most things, dubbing's usually done awfully and even when done well is still shit and takes away from the experience of watching something 99% of the time. Subtitles all the way (heck I use them even for when I speak the language in question, handy having them there if I mishear a word or something).

I do not speak Japanese, and I don't watch an anime to read, so I'm going to watch the dubbed version. If I wanted to read it I would get the manga, and if I wanted to listen to it with the original voices I would learn Japanese.

I really don't get this argument. Are you people actually saying you're completely incapable of simultaneously reading subtitles and watching a series/movie? Cause... you might wanna talk to a doctor or something if that's the case :\

I tend to prefer dubed, although once I go dubbed, i just cant watch the subbed version. the voice change just throws me out the window and I cant tell whos talking, so whichever version I start on, I tend to stick to.
