I have another argument for subs though. No man may ever take the place of Norio Wakamoto. It is simply not allowed.

I always watch subtitled. I've had too many bad dubbing experiences.

Do people really find it that hard to focus on the action and read subtitles at the same time?

I prefer dubbed when I can get it. I enjoy not focusing my attention at the bottom inch of the screen and being able to see what's going on. If I wanted to read an anime, I'd buy the manga.

Of course, I don't have a problem with subs if there's not an English dub available. Or if the English dub has been horribly butchered and edited in the name of child-friendliness...

This. I make my decision on a case-by-case basis. Some shows have great dubs, some have great subs. Why limit myself to the one when there is no singular superiority?

Do people really find it that hard to focus on the action and read subtitles at the same time?

I have trouble understanding people that have that issue. I don't even notice the subtitles when I watch them; I just process them automatically.

There has only been one anime where I prefered the dubs over the subs, and that's an obscure show of only three episodes called, My Dear Marie.

Other than that I take subs everytime.

I prefer my anime dubbed. I'm a lazy viewer.

Black Lagoon has one of the best English dubs I've ever heard. In the original, the voice actors for Revy and Rock try to speak English. I give them props for trying, but I had no idea what they were saying (of course there were no subtitles when they spoke English).

when it comes to serialized anime, I prefer subbed cause the voice acting in english is USUALLY terrible, not always, and I don't often have much of a choice. The really good series (to me) are the ones that haven't been translated yet and probably never will be.

However, in movies, I usually prefer the dubbed versions, especially when it comes to Miazaki/Funimation movies because they get big name voice actors for it. eg. Mark Hammil was in the english version of Castle in the Sky

I've only ever watched dubbed anime, though as far as I know all the ones I've seen have either equally good or better english dubs than the original japanese. Also, I like being able to watch the show itself instead of reading text at the bottom.

I don't usually watch anything that's not in English anyway, but when I do, I watch it dubbed.
If I misread a subtitle, I try and read it again, then I'm behind on the next one and it all goes downhill, missing the actual show the entire time too.

this. dubs can sometimes be good, but subs should always, always, always be an option. especially since i'm about 1/4 deaf...

actually, on anime, i usually prefer dubs over original voice casting, since it seems 90% of all anime voices are done by the most annoyingly high pitched girls in the world. as long as they don't fuck up royally, ala Naruto, i tend to prefer dubs. however, live action movies tend to be the opposite. bad dubs are way worse than just reading subs.

Either. Not fussed. Usually go for the dub so long as it's good as I like it being in my native tongue, again so long as it's good and exists. If not, Sub that shit. But while some people say that dubs are usually shit, must I remind them about the occasionally awful subbing? The type of subbing which makes you wonder if the subs are right?

Of course dubs are no stranger to occasionally bewildering dialogue, so yeah, we can have bad dubs and bad subs. Equal. Some people might prefer it being closer to the source, but I'm not too fussed. Besides, who knows what the subber is putting there? Could be as off as the dub.

Calumon: I don't mind either, so long as they don't change names. That just makes things confusing.

i agree that some english dubs can be awful (that f***ing one piece dub), but the same can be said for whenever japan try's dubbing english stuff. i remember watching an american cartoon (i honestly can't remember what it was), and it was AWFUL. i didn't need to understand what they were saying to know it was awful, it was that bad.

plus, when you have dude's like yuri lowenthall, johnny yong F***ING bosch, steve blum, crispin freeman, jennifer hale, stephanie steh, michelle ruff.... way more i can't think of, but i honestly don't mind watching dubs with that kind of talent.

PLUS, it helps the deaf if something's in their own language. just sayin.

It depends on the dialogue, if it's well written I'd rather have bad english voice actors. If it's "Needless" I'd rather just hear the bad Japanese voice actors.

Oh, and I never EVER want to know what the people who do anime theme songs are saying. Trust me, the lyrics are either poorly translated, or just garbage.

I have to watched them dubbed, but only because I end up staring at the bottom of the screening, waiting for the characters to talk so I can read the subtitles... Which leads to missing vital points in the show/movie... Which sucks...
