My biggest problem with gamers right now is how they always go on about how its undermining the work done by other developers.

Erm, no it doesn't. Stop saying that. The "good games" will still be coming out. I've preordered duke, and knowing that you think its undermining the industry makes it sweeter

I'm quite surprised by the reasults in this poll... but I suggest rather than guessin if the game is good or not (and thus saying now if we will or will not buy it) we should wait for it to come out and read some reviews and watch some footidge... Personaly I would be able to tell my opinion on it's worth then. ^^

Nostalgia, the desire for a game that doesn't take itself too seriously and a need for excessive toilet humour. Cannot wait. I also look forwards to Serous Sam BFE but i prefered the older cartoony style.

The difference is that films, books and music are commonly accepted as valid artforms. In the eyes of the masses, video games are still pubescent macho manboy things that only frat boys could enjoy, DNF gladly helps along in cementing that stereotype.

And frankly, you could have a fun straightforward arcade shooter ~without~ all the stuff that makes DNF as offensive as it is.
But it's really not (seen as childish and full of losers and dumb frat boys). The simple fact is that number of people who have never played a video game is getting smaller and smaller everyday. It's not just for "losers sitting in their parent's basement playing some nerdy thing". Hell Hollywood blamed Halo 3 for their piss poor Box Office in the Month of October. As flawed as that logic was, nobody was sitting there saying, "Wow, I never realized there were so many nerds in the world." Go up to any random person on the street and tell them you play Call of Duty. Or say Portal, or Final Fantasy, or just list off any video game. If they don't know what you're talking about just tell them it's a Video Game. They won't back off from you like you have the plague or anything, they won't really care. Gaming isn't a niche hobby anymore, and more and more people are realizing that.

Yes, you're always going to have your Roger Ebert's of the world; people who are really resistant to the new medium of entertainment. But I'm sure there were people who protested movies when they first came out, that it was childish and the only REAL entertainment was the Theater. And yes you'll still have groups like Fox News, raising controversy is how they raise money. It's just that they're in the minority. People are accepting gaming as something more than just shooting baddies. Otherwise games like Portal or any puzzle game would never exist as they would never turn a profit. It's the benefit of casual gamers, that they showcase how gaming isn't something that you can use as an insult.

We've moved past the era where games like Custer's Revenge DID hurt the industry. Gaming isn't in danger of having another crash like it did in '83, it's too strong now. It's moved past infancy as an industry. It's 30 something years old now, it's an adult. Finally everyone is acting like this is the first game to do this. Have you ever heard of Conker's Bad Fur Day? That was arguably even worse than DNF and the industry survived it, moved on, and has now become stronger than ever. One game isn't going to ruin the industry, it would take a massive shift from EVERY developer and publisher to make that happen. Everybody would have to get on board and say, "Sexism and stupid violence is the way to go. Make it happen." But because games like Heavy Rain or LA Noire exist, games that focus on story and visual's more than shooting Random Baddie A the game industry is not going to die off.

I have the Balls of Steel edition preordered. Personally, I'm getting sick of all these serious and "realistic" shooters. I miss the old fun ones, where you got to keep every weapon you picked up, you had to find health instead of it regenerating, the level designs were more than just linear sections put together with cut scenes, and you had insane over-the-top weapons. Just because you don't like it doesn't mean there aren't those of us who do.

So, your main problem is that they made a game that is supposed to be fun (you know, that thing that games are supposed to be) instead of being an interactive book/movie? Heavy Rain was pretty much a movie with QTE's, and Mass Effect (actually, all BioWare games) are so damn slow and boring. I'd rather have games that were fun then games where I run around for hours just talking to people and then when I finally get to a combat section, all I do is click on the enemy and wait for them to die, then click the next.

And yeah there are boobs, but at the end of the day, it still isn't as pathetic as BioWare's "love scenes".

well aren't you on a high horse? that sure looks like mighty amounts of credible fun up there!

anyways, i could care less for the duke, even though it has lots of merits for me to highly enjoy, but why the hell does every game have to be "artistic and deep"? that is the same fucking bullshit i hated about when critics judge movies, SOMETIMES i love to watch fucking movies where they just fling poop at each other and implode while thinking about cheese! that same mentality goes for video games, and obviously there was shit tons of people who did want the game to come out so they are providing that service, which i see no problem with. Personally i probably won't buy it, because it just isn't my kind of cheezy humor, but hell if more people like you keep popping up i might just buy the damn game out of spite to keep the dirty poo toilet games a churnin

Now I should point out that I don't mind some offensive, crass or downright stupid material in my games, after all I did enjoy DN3D, but from what I've seen of DNF so far, it simply has too much of that going on this time around. And when you have too much of that it stops being funny and starts being obnoxious. But that's how I feel about it at least.
This would be my reasoning. I don't need crass humour and deliberate attempts to shock and offend in my games, and I don't appreciate it either. Some is fine, especially mixed with other types of humour (hell, then it can be hysterical), but Duke Nukem seems to be that and only that, which puts me off. As far as I'm concerned, it's about as funny as fart jokes or a pre-teen picking their nose.

I don't think it's 'destroying gaming' like some people claim (although Fox News are going to be frothing at the mouth about this, the whiny little trolls), and I agree that it's probably a parody, and meant for the gamers who first played the originals. I don't care about that though. I just don't want to buy a game where a high point in the trailer is watching your character pee.

No, I won't buy it. Although I won't simply because I do not like first person shooters; have never been able to enjoy those for some reason. Besides, I grew up with consoles; I played PC games very rarily. I do remember playing the 2D duke once, but I have never played the 3D one. I don't share the same kind of nostalgia for the Duke like a lot of people :)

I'm well prepared that it'll probably be meh. I an understand that people want games that don't take themselves that seriously ( to be honest I never felt that CoD takes itself seriously anyway), but I don't really see how having a 10 year old boy's sense of humour is any better. In any case, I doubt it will be anything other than average except for having Duke, which I really don't see as anything particularly exciting as I never played a Duke game when I was a kid and so the humour has no nostalgia-factor to make it good.

Basically, it's going to make money out of kids and nostalgia.

First of all...this isn't true. You know what undoes what these developers do? You. The consumer (not you personally). If you're complaining that games like these shouldn't be made, you're entitled to that opinion, but does it equal the fall of all that is good in the gaming industry? Of course not.

Second, should we be sensitive to kids seeing and playing stuff like this? Yes. It is intended for adults, and should be kept that way. It's possible I misread you on that, so if I did I apologize.

I guess I'm saying that I don't think your opinion is wrong, you're entitled to it but I don't see why you're taking the fact that people like the game so personally. There's worse things out there in other mediums. For instance...Twilight. As a book, and as a film it is horrible, but is the film industry and everything positive it's done gone? Nope, and last I checked literature was still standing though that's another debate I suppose.

And for the record, I don't think people liking Duke Nukem's immature humor makes them immature, it's satire. Whether it's successful satire or not, I don't know, I haven't played it but you'd have to be pretty sensitive to take anything in it seriously.

I think Randy Pitchford made a good point himself; It'd be a pathetic ending to that particular story if it turned out that the game wasn't being made anyway. Not to say that entirely justifies making it, but I'd also say that there are still a lot of people looking forward to it, perhaps even more so now that it involves the whole 'vaporware' story.

You point out these "serious" games like it's the greatest thing ever. Maybe I want to play a game that lets me throw my turd and see titties. Hell, last night just for fun I hired a prostitute in Witcher 2. Yay boobs!

Just to save myself a few responses, yes I know loads of people are going to go buy it and that's how the games industry works, jeez.

Why the hell is there a Duke Nukem game coming out in this day and age? Duke is a like a cool stoner friend that you had way back when, as a teenager. You go away, stop speaking and when you did some growing up, got a job and you bump into him and its really awkward.
For you. For me and many other Duke fans, it's more a friend who promised us he'd take us to Disneyland. Many years pass with him still saying he will, he just needs to make plans. After about 12 years, we hear word that our friend died in a car crash. We mourn his loss and the broken promise of Disneyland, but eventually get over it. But it turns out that he didn't die, he's alive and kicking, and he is taking us to mother fucking Disneyland.

Are we older and more mature than we used to be? Yes. Does that mean I can't still enjoy Disneyland? Hell no.

You know what, I'll put it out there and admit that I actually played through two Duke Nukem games on the PS1, and they weren't that funny then, and its going to be...controversial at best today. I'm not saying that this game shouldn't be made, because there are some people who are curious about it, or that loved the old games, hell - most of the people who play this game will probably be 16 year old teens, who shouldn't be playing anyway
I am one of them. And from what I heard, the PS1 port of DN3D ws not exactly the best kind of port. What with awkward controls and cut content and all that jazz. I'm also guessing you played "Land of the Babes", which is universally considered awful amongst the fan base.

I just want to go on the record and say "I really don't care if someone under the age restriction plays or watches something they shouldn't" - for the most part anyway.
Metalocalypse is my favorite show, since you mention.

My biggest problem with this game is that it undoes everything that the games industry, those hard working individuals and teams behind some truly amazing work. Games like the Uncharted series, Heavy Rain (I know not fantastic gameplay, but stay with me here) and Mass Effect. Games that moved away from just being "childrens toys".
And Duke isn't a child's toy. It's a parody, satire, and celebration of over-the-top Macho-Man action heros. That's what Duke is. They threw all the best action heros into a pot, exaggerated it to the point of parody, and gave him a voice of his own. It just so happens that his voice can also appeal to kids who have no idea what he really is.

Developers that thought outside the box, giving the player something that can enrich their experience.
Well if you want to get pedantic, Duke Nukem Forever was fucking revolutionary back in the day. Jetpacks, talking characters, and levels set in the real world were all mind-blowing for FPSes back then. 3D Realms told the box to fuck off back in 1996.

Right, Duke Nukem. Whenever I talk about it, my friends all say, "I remember how fun it was" and I think, well, it was fun...but I was young and stupid back then. I thought Akhmed the puppet was funny back then. Then I grew up and I thought - wow...this really shouldn't be sold mainstream, or even at all.
Well my favorite cartoon when I was a kid was Ed, Edd, n Eddy. It's still pretty damn good nowadays too. So maybe your childhood was just kind of crap, I don't know.

I know theres a market for it, but how many law suits do you think are going to come out of this game "having a laugh" is going to cause?
...Absolutely none? At most Fox News will get their biased panties in a bunch. Duke Nukem Forever doesn't so much cross the line as it does break dance on it, says Gearbox's CEO. The main purpose of DNF's existence is to be the game fans have waited over a decade for. A secondary (If unintentional) purpose is to see just what is and is not acceptable nowadays. Sure 3-titted alien queens seem to be fine, but what about using a hot woman as a flag for CTF and having to spank her to get her to your base? What crosses the audience's line?

I suppose 2K didnt help themselves out when they decided to release this the same year as Mortal Kombat. Now if you look at how far the industry has come as a whole and then how far back into immaturity we've gone this year...yeah...not good is it?
Oh nooooooo, two games come out this year that are just there to be bloody fun. Sure Bioware is still Bioware, but now Mass Effect 3 will have strip clubs and cheesy one-liners because Duke Nukem Forever finally came out. I mean, do you have any idea how stupid what you just said even is?

Judge for yourself anyway, I've got to play it to review, but I'm not looking forward to that one. Wow...boobs. Yeah smack that butt. BFG! C'mon, just go watch porn and then play some TF2. Same damn result.
Don't forget the puzzles, many unique weapons, 15-hour campaign, un-paralleled amount of interactivity, multiplayer mutators, and this:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1I_j1AzOOSk

Is it immature? Yes. Is it going to be a blast? Also yes. Is it going to undo 15 years of gaming "Maturation" and send us back to the 90s? ...Do I really need to answer this one?

It's good to have a mix. I love games like Mass Effect (and I probably would have loved Heavy Rain if I had a PS3 as well) but sometimes I feel the need for a laugh. Hopefully Duke will supply that.
