which WILL be a better game than duke. Seriously anybody who buys duke just doesn't check release schedules.
A new Serious Sam? Holy crap! Why have I been kept in the dark about this?

I played Heavy Rain, Uncharted, and Mass Effect and I'm still getting Duke Nukem Forever. Duke Nukem doesn't undo anything. It's like saying the Fast and the Furious ruined film. It's just a fun little silly game. Not every game has to be 100% serious all the time. There will be no lawsuits because the game isn't serious and isn't meant to be taken seriously at all.

Say what you like about the game (after it comes out and you've played it for yourself, that is), but making assumptions about the kind of people who play games like Duke Nukem is simply wrong. I'm kind of tired of people acting like a game can't be good unless it's "dark and gritty" or something. Why can't a game just be silly fun?

Is it impossible to get both? Because Serious Sam is actually a ton of fun and I'm definitely going to grab that one when it comes out as well.

I recognize that to some extent comparisons to the movie industry don't apply. That said... I'm going to go ahead and torture a comparison to the movie industry. Because movies aren't taken seriously just because they make Schindler's List and Sunset Boulevard and Network. The same medium also has room for Scre4m and Your Highness and Piranha 3D. You might think the latter are atrocious (and you might be right), but the industry does both and while you might or might not choose to partake of any of the above, no one judges movies as a whole on the basis of a single entry.

Real growth of the medium can only occur when creators have the license to make grand artistic visions and pandering gut-level disposables (not to say with certainty that DN4 will be the latter.) National Geographic and Cosmopolitan. Da Vinci and Warhol. "I, Claudius" and "Jersey Shore".

I personally do want to play Duke Nukem (and if I had the disposable income to accomidate it I would be interested in getting it).

Just to save myself a few responses, yes I know loads of people are going to go buy it and that's how the games industry works, jeez.

Why the hell is there a Duke Nukem game coming out in this day and age? Duke is a like a cool stoner friend that you had way back when, as a teenager. You go away, stop speaking and when you did some growing up, got a job and you bump into him and its really awkward.

You know what, I'll put it out there and admit that I actually played through two Duke Nukem games on the PS1, and they weren't that funny then, and its going to be...controversial at best today. I'm not saying that this game shouldn't be made, because there are some people who are curious about it, or that loved the old games, hell - most of the people who play this game will probably be 16 year old teens, who shouldn't be playing anyway.

I just want to go on the record and say "I really don't care if someone under the age restriction plays or watches something they shouldn't" - for the most part anyway.

My biggest problem with this game is that it undoes everything that the games industry, those hard working individuals and teams behind some truly amazing work. Games like the Uncharted series, Heavy Rain (I know not fantastic gameplay, but stay with me here) and Mass Effect. Games that moved away from just being "childrens toys". Developers that thought outside the box, giving the player something that can enrich their experience. These games demonstrate that you can have movie quality like content within a game and take it further, make it unique and it'll last a lot longer than a film. You watch a film thats an hour and a half, two hours for a longer film, 9if you watch Lord of the Rings, but a short game game could last you up to 20 hours. I've gone off topic---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Right, Duke Nukem. Whenever I talk about it, my friends all say, "I remember how fun it was" and I think, well, it was fun...but I was young and stupid back then. I thought Akhmed the puppet was funny back then. Then I grew up and I thought - wow...this really shouldn't be sold mainstream, or even at all. I know theres a market for it, but how many law suits do you think are going to come out of this game "having a laugh" is going to cause? Everyone with their brand stamped on this are walking a tight rope about this - if its as bad as it could be, then bankruptcy is not a far fetched idea.

I suppose 2K didnt help themselves out when they decided to release this the same year as Mortal Kombat. Now if you look at how far the industry has come as a whole and then how far back into immaturity we've gone this year...yeah...not good is it?

Judge for yourself anyway, I've got to play it to review, but I'm not looking forward to that one. Wow...boobs. Yeah smack that butt. BFG! C'mon, just go watch porn and then play some TF2. Same damn result.
Let me put it this way, the film industry has both Michael Bay and Guillermo Del Toro, the former is a fellow who always just seems to put out mindless, explosion riddled eye candy (which does suspiciously well) whilst the latter has a great artistic vision and unique visuals.

The literary world has both Stephenie Meyer and J.R.R. Tolkein (again, former is seen as something of a lowest common denominator and the latter is seen as the guy who pretty much crafted our mental image of fantasy).

In the world of video games we have Duke Nukem (very much a guilty pleasure in how crude and borderline offensive it'll probably be) and games like Farenheit and Heavy Rain (which sacrifice simple fun in the name of artistic vision).

Also, your issue with how Duke Nukem is allegedly like an old stoner buddy doesn't really ring true in my experience. The gameplay was fun and the comedy in it was either very straight foward if you take it at face value or a bit of a satirical parody if you stop to think about how over the top it is most of the time (I don't think that the devs were really expecting us to take the game seriously and I honestly can't fault them for at least having a sense of humour about it).

Yes, people are going to take offence to it but that's not nessercarily a bad thing in itself (with a game like Duke Nukem it would be next to impossible to make it without it offending someone), there is something of a cathartic entertainment value in being able to revel in the sheer bluntness of a game that has you tip strippers, deficate on alien corpses and generally be the poster child of misogyny.

I wouldn't say Duke Nukem is any more harmful to the perception of video games for it's crudeness than Farenheit and Heavy Rain are for the fact that they seemingly forgot that a good game does in fact need good gameplay (a 'cinematic experience' didn't really sell me on Heavy Rain, I can't help but be cynical about it).

I think you're being a bit extreme when you say that Duke Nukem Forever will be exactly the same as watching porn and playing TF2 (I get the feeling that you may be missing the point somewhat of the game).

Anyone who can slander the idea that media can be made with deliberate bad taste as part of its idea clearly hasn't seen any movies since... well the 1900's.
Yes I'm going to buy it. No I don't have high expectations.
Yes I probably am going to laugh my ass off- and it will be great.

One word the OP evidentially didn't understand about the Duke.

Parody.

Hail to the King, Baby.

Cool story, bro.
In all seriousness, Duke Nukem obviously has a market, and so they're going to make it. There's no point whining about it, if you don't like it, don't buy it. You won't be affected by it. Also I would like to point out that it is generally frowned upon to make your first ever post a new thread. just sayin'...

I MIGHT rent it. Depends on the reviews. This is a game one could easily get "burned" on. I will wait for public reaction and then decide if I want to check it out. After all the bad mojo around this game, I think it is a bad idea to walk in on blind faith. So far, its a big fat "No" on buying it.

I don't have enough money for it.. I mean with American McGee's Alice 2 madness returns, Hunted, InFamous 2, Warhammer40k Space Marine, Deus Ex, Batman Arkham City, Hell the Darkness 2, Uncharted 3, Assassin's Creed Revelations,Bioshock Inifite, adn Diablo 3 do you think I have enough money for those games? as of right now I have to cut down on quality games.

bottom line I can't afford nostalgia.

I for one, am hoping that the Duke is not going to pull any punches. Whilst I can appreciate the beauty of say, Mass Effect or the grit of Modern Warfare, I want a game that a) doesnt take itself too seriously and b) doesn't care what you think about it.

So you appreciate Mass Effect, Heavy Rain and Uncharted? Do games HAVE to have an emphasis on maturity and storytelling, or else risk bringing gaming back a notches? Who really cares?

I would feel sick if the industry and society decided that they were "simply too mature" for another Duke game.

It looks so immature and almost childish even though its a "M" rated game.
So only 13 year olds or brain-dead people might find it entertaining cuz I mean really...its attracting people with tits and pathetic trash jokes...

Sometimes I want a game that doesn't take itself too seriously and just runs with it. I liked Eat Lead: The Return of Matt Hazard, Borderlands (though I wished that they'd put more of the backstories that were made for the PCs into the game), and Bulletstorm for the same reasons. I'm hoping that Earth Defense Force: Insect Armegeddon doesn't take itself too seriously and that is captures some of the narm that made me enjoy EDF2017.

How about, get over it? Just as there is a market for brain dead action movies, mind numbing Crime thrillers (books) and incredibly shallow music, there is a market for games like Duke Nukem. This is not an association by any means, I would rank the Duke as part of the "Golden" Era of PC gaming and I don't see why he can't fit into today's games.

It sounds like you're just trying to feed a superiority complex, by dismissing a game you haven't played yet as tripe. While simultaneously belittling

FYI, Duke shouldn't have been played by kids, but when did that stop them... anyway, the OLD duke was marketed towards adults, and gained infamy through that. Just because you think you've grown up (note: abandoning childish humour does not correlate to growing up) doesn't mean this game is somehow beneath you (or adult gamers).

Finally, what exactly can the duke undo, that drivel like CoD hasn't already shat on... in my opinion the likes of CoD (play safe, mindless drivel, appeals to a majority who cares not for the state of the industry) damages the industry more then any other title out there, but alas... it's just my opinion.

EDIT: You also mention "movie" quality in games... what about game quality in games. Not everyone want's an epic adventure all the time, or super serious space dramas. A lot of people still like to play pac man... simplicity can be a virtue.

You diminish the industry with such an elitist perspective. Your view is as shallow as the people who demonise it, regardless if you meant well by it.

Yeah, people will say the game's for 12 year olds and such like that, which I find to be juvenile in and of itself, but in all honesty...Who cares? It's Duke Nukem, the man who has had a reputation with an enormous ego for years. Plus, for a game in development for this long a time, it's well worth buying just to show the detractors, "You were wrong."

Personally, if the game succeeds in sales, then it says something else about the industry: That we know when to just cut loose and have fun, everyone else be damned. If that's the case, then we consumers are supporting the right stuff.

I'm buying it come Day 1, and I have half my reserve paid, so now it's just getting another paycheck to pay for it.

Yes,because every game must be either a serious artistic masterpiece with deep commentaries about society or an industry-changing blockbuster.

I see Duke Nukem like I see Magicka,a game made to have fun.No deeper meaning,no intricate backstory and mythos.Just you, aliens and toys.

stop being so pretentious. there is room for all types of games, mature and immature in the industry. you dont need to push the cultural barrier for your game to be valid. i would rather play duke nukem than heavy reain anyday.

i loved L.A. Noire, Mass Effect 2 is one of my favorite games of all times, but i will be in line to pick up my copy of the duke the first day, because i dont always want deep stories, sometimes i want dumbass fun.

...am I the only one who enjoyed DN3D as a game?

On topic, of course I'm going to be buying this.
