my first playthrough would be on normal to have some fun and get to know the story, right after that, I'd switch to the hardest setting just for the challenge.

I like to play on medium for my first play-through, unless it's a game that requires me to answer questions beforehand, and puts me on hard. I will never start on an easy difficulty however, I just find them boring.

Although I do like Rhubarb Pie, I usually go with the medium difficulty, since I'm not that great at games, so I tend to get setroyed on the Insane difficulty, and it takes away the fun, exact opposite with easy, you win without a challenge, making it to easy and not fun...
Exactly this... if the game is good enough I'll try it on all difficulties. The easy playthrough is like your reward for getting through the toughest!

Currently enjoying my easy MAss Effect 2 run after beating it on insanity.... I need to enjoy the game again lol

Difficulties. They are the literal game changer of ones gaming experience. Gaming difficulties is like Goldielocks to some gamers. Not too hard, not too easy, but just in the middle.

Then, there are the people that like to go all out and go all or nothing in the insane(or any high difficulty) difficulty. Sometimes, it is actually fun for these people. Maybe because of the combination of the challenge and the sweet sweet taste of overcoming that challenge. Either way, these people like to play their asses off...
unless they are playing a game in which insane is just easy all over again...we've all played that type of game.

Then, the people that just like to relax and have fun with what they are doing. These people prefer the easy way of the gaming experience. Especially in sandbox games.

Oh yeah and the other people who I cannot talk about for reasons unknown....

Basically what I am asking my fellow Escapians, is what type of difficulty do you prefer? Easy, Medium, or Insane?

Me? You ask me what I like? Personally I am part of the "other" spectrum of the poll. If I feel angsty, ill go for the big reward and choose insane mode. If I want a challenge, but also want to have fun, ill go to medium. If I just want to relax from a hard day of work or something, I play easy mode all day long.

I have created a thread exactly like this, then again, its probably already down there and I dont expect anybody to read through all past threads.

OT: Medium then insane unless previous experience with other games of the same series.

With FPS games its always hard difficulty or hardest. With RPGs its more of a trail and error type of picking difficulty.

Usually on the first run-through, I play either easy or medium, then I plow through the game on the hardest mode the game has.

I always play Medium or Normal the first time, then if I like the game I ramp it up to the higher difficulty on a second playthrough, then at the end I have fun screwing around on easy difficulty.
^ is me. i enjoy just expierencing the game first, then make it hard.

If the game allows you to change difficulty midway, I always start on the hardest difficulty, otherwise I go with medium.

I do Medium to begin with, and afterwards I decide if it's worth doing on Insane. Really can't be bothered with Easy difficulties, though. Just doesn't seem any point in making yourself invincible.

I like to play on hard or medium first, to get to grips with the game. After that I like to go for very very very hard mode :)

I like to start a game on Easy, then the next playthrough I'll kick it up a notch (BAM!) and go to the next difficulty level, and so on, until I manage to eventually beat a game on the highest difficulty possible. That is, if I like the game. If I don't, then I'll just leave the game after I finish it the first time. Or sell it and use the money towards buying a better game...

SPICE WEASEL FTW!!!!!

Yet another one here who generally picks whatever the default is, i.e. "normal" in most cases.

There are some exceptions, though. Killing Floor is surprisingly hard on normal if you're just starting out and haven't leveled up at all, so I dropped down a bit on that until I got a level or two in whatever class I was using unless I was playing with other people. On the other hand, Torchlight is ridiculously, absurdly easy no matter what difficulty you're playing on. Unless you have hardcore mode on, anything less than "very hard" is a complete joke, and even that can be pretty easy depending on what class/skills you use, so I don't even bother playing on anything lower than that.

Normal. Except where 'normal' means murderously challenging at some points, which, in games like The Witcher and Dragon Age it can be, especially with certain bosses. I usually end up turning the difficulty down at these points, and you can just forget about making it harder! ^^'

Usually start out on normal. However, it is not always easy to judge what constitutes a good "moderate" challenge. For instance, when I play Dragon Age on normal, every encounter is a close scrape with death. In contrast, when playing Dawn of War 2, I have to crank the difficulty all the way up to even occasionally lose.

I usually will play the hardest difficulty first as I can unlock multiple achievements that way.
I hate when developers lock the hardest difficulty in a vain attempt to make you replay the game, a most recent example is Alan Wake.
Why the fuck would I play through it again?

I will usually play on normal first time round, unless there is greater reward for the higher difficulties, such as achievements, cutscences, alternate endings, etc.

Normal. I'm good enough at game to not need the cruch of easy but at the same time I actually want to finish my game and going straight for hard could lead to frustration and not finishing a game.

I usually set the game to hard, but normally not the hardest difficulty.

Playing through modern warfare on veteran was horrible.
