I've only been able to play for about an hour or hour and a half, but I can say so far that I'm really digging this game. As far as the campaign map goes, they've really added some great options. I've only taken place in two small field battles, but so far that seems pretty fun, too.

I'm just interested in what people think of Empire so far, and whether or not it met your expectations. I also wanted to add, it'd be nice if people would give their opinions based off of the full game and not just the demo.

I've played some of The Road to Independence, because I wanted to get a feel for the new strategies before I embarked on the Grand Campaign, and I am very satisfied.
I found the land battles satisfying, and noticed the AI learn from mistakes. Haven't had the opportunity to fight naval battles yet (exept for the demo,) but I am confident that will satisfy too.

considering how soon you've asked for people's impressions you may as well allow impressions of the demo.

I honestly didnt think it was going to be this good!

I have done abit of Road to Indenpence but after awhile that little voice that kept whispering to me "Play the campaign, play the campaign", I ended up loading a GC with the British Empire.

I must say theres so much to do on the campaign map, yet it remains so simple-not in a bad way in the good way as is simple but its still chalenging- I like the new province system to, you just dont capture the main city but you have to "clean" your enemies provinces too, attack were it huts more, so its nice that you have a feeling that you hurting your enemy directly. Diplomacy also seems to be improved and is actually usefull, spying is also alot more fun, becomes much better when you steal your enemys technology ^^ and the AI is much much better then Rome/ME2 but stil has its silly moments.

Why is that? It can be bought and downloaded through Steam in the matter of a couple of hours.

Completely agree about everything you said. Particularly diplomacy in the past two TW games was practically useless, but now it's fun just to see what sort of things you can make happen.

Aliances now are actually usefull apart from not having a faction at your borders annoying you for 10 turns. You can ally with someone and share technology, and fuel their War machine or yours, but of course...in Total War no one shares power for ever!

I've really been looking forward to this game and I can't wait to play it. (It should be coming on Friday) I'll vote once I've played it.

I'm unimpressed by the naval battles --- Creative Assembly's never done ship combat before and it shows. But the land battles, campaign management, and overall design of the game? It's hard to see a game topping it for Game of the Year this year. I could really see this game growing on me over the next few weeks to the point where I might---might---be persuaded to rank it above Rome.

Would someone who generally dislikes turn-based strategy games (but loves RTSs) find this game fun? I know it's turn-based for the most part (or at least, I think I read that somewhere), but the real-time battles look interesting enough.

depends on what you generally dislike about turn-based strategy games?

probably not, tho. the total war games allow you to skip the campaign if you wish and just play battles on the RTS maps.

try the demo?

it's the first week of march.
So? Show me something on this year's list of releases that's a legit candidate to beat it out. And don't say any console game. A console game hasn't been worthy of Game of the Year status since 1995 (Chrono Trigger).

EDIT: And don't give me that crap about Fallout 3 being a 360 game. It's a PC game first and foremost, as any trip to the Fallout 3 Nexus rapidly proves. Ditto Oblivion, Portal (just because you CAN play Portal on the 360 doesn't mean you SHOULD), and any other PC game with a console port.

Suit yourself. Personally, I like games of shooty shooty stabby stabby boom boom cannon. They don't make war like they used to.

I'm having a little trouble getting into it (only a tiny tiny bit mind you), but total war is always that way for me. Once I work out some strategies and such rather than my current one of zerg zerg zerg I'm sure its going to be great :p Well it's already great, but I am sure it will be greater.
Also was rather funny learning that I can no longer charge my cavalry through my units anymore.
Off to continue my campaign so I can unlock more units and learn some strategies :p

I just remembered I have to mention that I love the changed role of cavalry in this game. The fact that it is no longer efficient to charge the enemy head on forces me to adopt more diverse tactics, which is a good thing; Because earlier, especially in Medieval II, I was prone to have most of my strategies and tactics rely way to much on cavalry.
