When people say humanity is getting dumber, I think we need to look at humanity's history from a broader perspective.

For example, surely we aren't as dumb as we were during the Crusades?

Her you go. [http://www.escapistmagazine.com/forums/read/18.70218] Good night.

EDIT: Note, not deja-naziing, that's just the best thread ever (except the cockney thread).
Good god, that's... long...

But funny. Thank yeh. :p
Yeah, I still haven't gone all the way through it, I keep it bookmarked for when I'm bored.

I don't think actual intelligence has gone down much, if at all. Grab any redneck or other 'igorant' person and test them against people from a 100+ years ago, and I'd bet they would do about the same, if not better. Better nutrition and mandatory schooling are superior to the little or no education of the past. That said, people in current society ARE ridiculously ignorant. Ignorance is everywhere, and its presence in almost everything makes folks seem less intelligent.

People back in the day were ignorant out of happenstance, people nowadays choose ignorance over hearing anything that contradicts what they already know.

No, natural selection doesn't care about anything other that our ability to successfully reproduce. And intelligent people are known to have less children.

If anything, we're just more likely to get sexier.

Youtube is the proof that humanity as a whole is without hope for the future.
Is it proof, or a cause? I'm not saying that we blame the various media sources in the world, but I find often that things like youtube are great artistic ideas when they start, but ultimately, you end up having to search long and hard to find anything that is truly artistic or actually good. People post a few stupid videos on youtube, hoping for their 15 internet minutes of fame, and reveal to the rest of the world just what a couple of twits they are. Some other twits see it and create their stupid video, some others see that, and so on and so forth.

I believe that humanity is stupid, but mostly those stupid people are teenagers. Hell, I'm still a teen and I'm still pretty stupid, even coming up on 20. And I tend to think that most people in our societies are about the same in this respect. We're all very stupid people for quite a while, and we really get the opportunity to let the world know through things like youtube.

So, what am I getting at? That people have always been stupid, are our generation is no different. Our problem is that with the internet, we have the horrid pleasure of watching the stupidity of our generation seconds after it happens.
I respectfully disagree; some of the most fucktarded people I dealt with in my retail "career" were middle-aged or older. And the funny/sad part is, it seems that the likelihood of also being an insufferable asshole rises with direct proportion to stupidity. I can forgive momentary lapses in judgment, especially if the person in question realizes their mistake; the people that bother me are the consistently stupid ones who never learn from their mistakes, like the ones who are never satisfied with their service but keep coming back. It's similar to the old "bad food, small portions" conundrum. (Then again, I could be mistaking stupidity for entitlement-whorishness; maybe this isn't stupidity but rather a misguided belief that the squeaky wheel gets the grease, even if it's squeaking because it just drove a claw hammer into its own nuts and wants to blame everyone else.)

I think it was Scott Adams who said that in the future, everyone will be sexy but no one will know how to work the computers.

Actually he is right.

Evolution means we will get smarter. Evolution means every generation is suposed to be better equipped than the precedent. Which part is better is rather impossible to tell but eventually we will become smarter.

Oh and c'mon people being knowleable(A.K.A going to school) =/= being smart.

You can have all the education in the world and still be a dumb shit, you'll simply be a knowleable dumb shit.

There will always be morons until I rule. The internet just gave the morons a soapbox and the location of like-minded morons.

each generation we are adding more intelligence and knowledge into our genetics. Hence why inbreeding is harmful, because were not sharing dna, just being swirled around in a drian.
its obvious that we are becoming more intelligent, just look at science and technology.
EX: from Wheel to the rocket ship

as for on average... you'd have to take a poll or something. whats the ratio of people graduating highschool compared to dumb people breeding? ( i don't think i phrased that correctly)

Nah, I'm just new here. Forgive my temporary lapse. (For my sake, please don't mention the word "hypocrite" at this point, I don't think I could take it. I'm fragile, y'see.)

Nope, that's not necessarily true. All that matters for natural selection is that your genes are carried on. While intelligence may help an animal gather the resources necessary to reproduce and care for young, if it turned out that a degree of stupidity increased the number of surviving children who reproduce we'd have more stupid people. I'm not saying people will become retarded, but the single bitter collage professors that don't have kids don't pass on their genes. Unlike the octomoms of the world who implant themselves with 8 children.

Of course, education isn't genetic, so some of this is moot.
