I've been playing EVE Online for a few months now and I love it. I only have a Caldari Caracal-class cruiser, but I can pilot a Scorpion or a Raven Battleship; however, in a few weeks, I'll be able to pilot a Caldari Rokh-Class Battleship and outfit it with large hybrid turrets and all manner of things that make other things explode and/or die painfully. I'm just wondering what other people think of this game. Now, I know EVE Online is not for everyone. It requires patience and thought unlike other mmorpg's like Age of Conan and World of Warcraft and it doesn't have some easy path that you have to follow or else you'll suck. Before I start ranting about how great I think EVE is and how horrible i think WoW is, i'll post this topic.

P.S. If you have any problem with my grammar and/or vocabulary, please tell me so that I can fix it.

I like it, but I have one major problem with it. If you get shot down, that ship that you saved so long and hard for is gone forever. Fine, you can get insurance, but it's still a major inconvenience. It is a great game, no doubt about it, and I played it for a few months myself. I got a bit disillusioned though and now I just find that there are more entertaining games to spend time on.

I picked 'Other'. I haven't played it, but I've read about it and it seems interesting. Looks like a cross between Homeworld and Elite but with real people piloting the gajillion or so ships that want to kill me. But however interesting a game may seem, my wallet has the final say on MMOs and at about £14 a month my wallet says no. Other it is then! >.<

EVE is a good game, it's actually the MMO that held my attention longer than any other. That being said, I am not really a fan of the genre.

For me thats one of the pulls of this game. When you die there is no respawn button. If you lose something its gone forever. Very few games get my heart rate going that high that fast like jumping into a system and having a few dozen hostiles sitting on the gate. And the sense satisfaction of getting out alive.

That and when you kill somone else, you know they actually lost something unlike other MMOs where they hit the respawn button and come back to their corps and lose a few gold for repairs.

There are quite a few players of EvE on this Forum. The first two that spring to mind are myself, who's been playing for a couple years, and Theo Samaritan, who's been playing for an obscene amount of time.

The sheer-player-driven-ness of the game is what pulls me. News articles being read by players written by the devs about other players, that's pretty unique.

And as for the lack of land combat, with ambulation looming... well, you never know what the future holds, CCP have already shown with the 2.0 graphics engine that they have no problems playing around with their game engine.

thats a valid point..

In EVE when you defeat somebody, you really do defeat them, if its a sworn enemey, someone whos an ass to everyone on IM, or a friend you want to piss off theres a mssive amount of satisfaction after destroying them.

Another thing that would draw me back to EVE is the fact that everyone is on the one server, plus some pretty amazing images of the stars.. truely good game, however my wallet also dictates, and £14 is a bit too much..

£10 for Warhammer Online- im looking forward to that next month :D

I get EVE for a tenner a month, whatcha on about?

Anyway, I love EVE for the sheer reality of it. It's already been said, but if you lose something, it's gone, and it's only one person's fault.

Aside from that, f*cking Triumverate have ruined my in-game life twice now, f*cking asswipes, and they are so immaturely irresponsible on the forums. D*cks.

Yea, that's what draws me to EvE as well. The market is based on supply and demand unlike other games (Wow, Everquest, everything else), everything in the game world is made by other players (except certain items gotten from missions), and everything is so real.

Also, Ambulation is going to allow people to walk around space stations and spaceships. Actually walk around with their own full body 35 avatars. People will also be able to customize their own quarters on their ships. CCP might even put ground combat into EvE. That would be amazing. CCP would have to create all kinds of troop transports and ground vehicles for land combat though. I guess anyone with enough money could buy equipment and soldiers (private military contractors/mercs) and wage their own wars. Corporations already have massive wars with each over that can last months. Imagine a whole new level of depth added to those wars: ground combat. Instead of just taking over a system when all their ships are destroyed, you'd have to take over their planets by force unless they surrender or retreat. The military officers of corporations would have control over units, kind of like an RTS, and you would have employees in the corporations that would actually fight on the ground like in an FPS or a Third Person Shooter. The players would have squads that they would control, kind of like Rainbow Six Vegas. That would draw shooter and RTS players to EvE. FPS players who play games like Halo 3, Crysis, Bioshock, Call of Duty 4, and other FPS games could have a place in EVE. Instead of having to deal with the complex nature of being a pod pilot, they could focus on ground skills, rise through the ranks, and fly small fast fighters in large fleet engagements. Pod Pilots could fire upon ground troops as well. I'd love to see a massive Rokh battleship come into the atmosphere and aim its massive railguns at the tiny enemy soldiers down below. That would be awesome. What do you guys think of that idea?

Also, does Yahtzee even know about EvE Online? Cause he said that all mmorpg's have the same controls and play out the same way. He should review EvE Online The Empyrean Age. I think it would be interesting and really funny. I just hope he doesn't brutally murder it with an ice pick. I think he would like EvE if he plays it, mostly because it's much darker and more realistic than other games. Also because when you kill someone, they lose a ship which costs money, and if you pod them (destroying their escape pod, which is ok during a war), they can lose a ton of skills depending on what kind of clone they got.

Possibly a little over-enthusiastic there. But I reckon a much deeper and more brutal equivalent of SWG is more than possible if they work at it.

As for a zero-punctuation review, I agree on the surface that it seems to go against what he thinks about most MMOs, but there's still plenty of grind, and having to entertain yourself while playing a game is one of his pet-hates, and you have to do that plenty.

Plus, of course, he couldn't get a proper taste for the game without playing it for a good while. Saying all that though, I'd still like to see a review.

I have read lots about EVE, but I have a crap computer so can't play it (I also can't afford the monthly fee...) It looks really interesting though.

PS. You did ask, so:

No apostrophe is needed (because it's a plural), and the 'i' - well... I suppose it just looks nicer when they're all capitals.

The one good thing I found about eve, is that it can play on even the crappiest computers. Here are the min specs I pulled off their website.

OS: Windows® XP / Vista
CPU: Intel Pentium® III 800 MHz or AMD Athlon 800 MHz
RAM: 512 MB or more
HD space: 6.0 GB
Network: 56k modem or better Internet connection
Video: 32 MB 3D graphics card. GeForce 2 Series or greater, ATi Radeon 7200 or greater and Similar chips from other manufacturers
Drivers: DirectX® 9.0c (included) and latest video drivers

ok sure that is the minimum, and it will run like crap.. but it WILL run. Which is kind of nice.

One part bothersome, elitist community, one part not fond of the space setting, and one part distaste for MMOs in general means I have to say no to this one.

I enjoy EVE for many reasons, and if I listed them all I'd most likely break the forum.

All I can really say otherwise is... VELDSPAR! [http://dl.eve-files.com/media/corp/OTHER/Veldsparized2.jpg] >)

EVE Online is for people who want a challenge, above all else. Even though they've streamlined and simplified the tutorials recently, it's still a game where you're going to have to ask for help (seriously, ask an EVE player about villard wheels... and expect a knowing chuckle). Also, it's a game where if you're flying, you're not safe. Never, ever fly a ship, or carry anything, you aren't prepared to lose.

I have an account, though I haven't played it in a while. I tend to solo a lot and the game doesn't make it easy- but it IS possible.

I've tilted my head a lot at that...

It made me laugh, but is that a dread or an abaddon? It looks more like a dread but I thought you couldn't dock those?

I'm thinking about this waaaay too much.

Its a dreadnaught. Yes you can dock them. It's actually Chribba's dreadnaught. The one he uses to mine in high security space (where dreadnaughts are not able to go for those who dont know). That is Chribba's Tatoo. Yes it is real, I was there when he got it.

I loved it, but I don't pay for mmorpg's. It's just not worth it in my opinion, no matter how good it is.
