I've been having trouble sleeping lately, so I started wondering if this is common.

for me it's just basic insomnia. I want to sleep, I'm tired, but it takes forever to get to sleep.

Have you ever had trouble sleeping? if so, why? also, how did you deal with it?

Note: i am nocturnal, naturally. i sleep in the day, and am awake at night. sleeping once the sun rises is easy. i'm trying to sleep at night, because everyone else is awake in the day. people get really noisy in the day, especially my neighbors. makes it hard to sleep at day because they wake me up with a parade of 7 kids or so, and these kids scream.

on a side note: i once made a cup of tea so strong that the 1 cup of this tea had so much caffeine that i could not sleep for 3 days. all 3 days were school days. on day 3 i got home, when to sleep, woke up 4 hours later, got ready for school and realized it was still Thursday.

Apparently it's weird to take at least half an hour to fall asleep so I guess I do.

It's bloody annoying when you have classes to go to -.-

Last night, actually. Went to bed at 2.30am, didn't actually fall asleep til 6/7am. I'm putting it down to illness right now but I normally have a night like this once a month so it doesn't bother me.

Got this in about 2 days a month. Eyes are burning, i'm moaning about things, but when the lights are out i'm totally awake thinking about stuff in the past/from today/in the future and can't figure out whether to lie on my stomach or my back.

Hard to deal with it, there is no real cure but to make it through.

But i know this doesnt work:

1. Sleeping longer in the morning
2. Sleeping in the afternoon when coming from work

I keep myself awake until its time for bed the next day. After 2 days its mostly ok.

I have trouble sleeping all the time. My current remedy is early morning (usually around 3-4AM) Radio 2 and a nightcap of whiskey. Works a treat. Although (and this is a stretch I know) you could try resetting your body-clock to become a night-owl. The early hours are really peaceful, and a great time to be up if you have a stressful job.

I never sleep much anyway.

Usually go to bed around 2am and get up at 7.30am.

Haven't slept much at all the past few days though, couple of hours round about.

On occasion. It might not be common for me, but it does happen. I literally just can't get comfortable. At all. I've actually found the best remedy for that is to sleep on my floor. It actually works for me.

Insomnia is your body telling you that something is wrong.
In MOST cases it's "You stayed up too late Playing Skyrim/BF/MW/Hello Kitty Island adventure last night, and your body clock is off".

The best way to treat this insomnia is to switch the lights off, relax, listen to some soft music and get in a comfortable position to rest, even if you can't sleep. Your body will work much better after resting for a few hours than sitting up all night watching the alarm clock blink.

If you go more than say 3 days without being able to re-establish a normal sleep pattern make an appointment with your GP, and get it checked out. You might be prescribed some antihistomines to help you get natural sleep (Yes, I know antihistomines treat allergies but in a high dose they also aid sleep), or you might find out you have a hormone imblalance or something more serious.

Pretty much all the time as in it usually take me somewhere an hour and a half to fall alseep. While it's most likely because of my mind keep on running and hard to turn it off, a part of my trouble sleeping is due to outside noises and I'm a light head sleeper (my ears are more alert) meaning if my parent use and flush the toliet I will wake up from the sound.
The only way I can deal with this is no playing games an hour before bed time, take a sip of water so my throat isn't dry and in bed try to imagine I'm sinking or falling in the bed.

It quite often takes me at least an hour to get to sleep, although its not been as bad the last few days.

I've looked into it a little and apparently some people can have completely normal sleep patterns and sleep fine, but they're not actually ready to sleep (no matter what) until the early hours of the morning (say, gone 1 o'clock) - all of which describes me to a tee.

My actual sleeping is fine, once I get there.

I can currently get no more then 6 hours of sleep regardless what time I go to bed. Amazingly, I can still run on that.

I hate sleep with a burning passion. I think its an evil necessity. I could be spending the time doing absolutely anything else in the world, but no - gotta sleep. sometimes I lay there and get worked up that my heart will stop if I fall asleep, or I'll stop breathing (which has actually happened a few times). My Bampi (Welsh grandfather) game me a good tip as he sleeps the moment he hits the pillow which was:

To lay down, close your eyes and think about nothing. Keep thinking of nothing and do not open your eyes.

It's worked a few times for me but sometimes I forget or can't stop thinking about things. Like I said: I have better, more entertaining, more important, me developing things to do than sleep.

... I also hate feeling really tired. SO it's a real fucking pain, this topic.

This has always been my solution when I have trouble sleeping. A small drink really can help.

My problem is more often with STAYING asleep. I woke up a couple dozen times before my alarm today. Annoying.

Lack of sleep is your friend here. I operate on around 5-6 hours sleep a night, and for those hours I'm dead to the world. On my occasional day off, when I can have a healthier 7-8 hours, I sleep really lightly and wake up at the drop of a hat. Personally I think it's God's way of messing with me, constantly waking me up on the rare times I can have a lie-in.

Same here. 30mins to an hour usually, cause of something I was born with.

Yeah. I suffer from the common TATT syndrome. (Tired all the time.)

I'm tired all throughout the day, but when I start to get sleepy and nighttime, my adrenaline glands flare up, thus making me restless and energetic... But still sleepy...

The only time I ever have trouble sleeping is in the summer when it's really hot and god forbid there's no air conditioning. Not only because of the heat, but because I just can't sleep if I don't have a decent amount of blankets on me. I've never understood how people can sleep with just a sheet or nothing.

I haven't had a good sleep in almost 5 years. There's nothing I can really do about it, though tiring myself out by exercising right before I sleep partly negates how much I wake up during the night.

I feel like death warmed up all the time though. Business as usual.
