Yes. Quite often actually.

Probably doesn't help that I work nights and only manage to fall asleep when the sun comes up. Usually takes me at least 45 min to fall asleep.

The best way to treat this insomnia is to switch the lights off, relax, listen to some soft music
To a degree. A better option that I have learnt is to listen to music/audio book/ stand-up comedy, but something that you already know intimately. The ones where your brain starts filling in the words before they come out of your speakers.

Soon enough (and for me this amount of time has dropped over the last few years from taking 240+ minutes to sleep with the use of prescription meds down to 45-70ish most nights with no meds) the brain shuts down.

It's when you don't know what's coming and your brain is actively engaging itself that no matter how soft the music, you won't sleep because your mind wants to know what's next.

Oh course, basics like not imbibing caffeine/sugar or smoking an hour or so before you go to bed is a must too. All of those prevent sleep.

I often have trouble, but it's more like I can't wind down - not tired, wide awake in fact, when I really should be sleeping.
What often causes this for me is playing videogames too late, especially games with lots of action, FPS shooters especially. I mean, I used to play a lot of Battlefield:MC, and trying to sleep after that was always a nightmare, it's like my mind is still playing the game subconciously. It's crazy, kinda like a waking dream, even dying and respawning - so it's not like my brain even let me be awesome. When your brain is working overtime, then you suddenly stop and try to sleep, sometimes it takes a while before your brain realises and settles down. Crazy I know, I hope some escapists have had weird videogame dreams like that before - my brother has, so I know it's not just me! - If you haven't then imagine getting a game stuck in your head, much like sometimes you might get a song stuck in your head. It's weird and annoying but kinda cool at the same time. Lucid videogaming if you like.

Anyway - Avoid high caffeine drinks, avoid playing videogames an hour before you go to bed, and have a snack, maybe some waffles or a bagel. Also, when you are suffering, get up and do something, anything really - try and knock your brain out of the gear it's stuck in - watch a little TV, read something, and wear something warmer as well for when you try and get to sleep again.

Can't say that I ever really have trouble falling asleep. The only times I really do are when I've napped late in the afternoon. Maybe it helps that I go to bed with a "blank" mind. Sometimes, the insomnia is caused by worrying about stuff (i.e. finances, relationships, work etc). I just find a way to tell myself that there's nothing I can do until the morning so there's no use in losing sleep over it.

I guess it also helps that I love sleeping and since I've slept on many types of surfaces in cold and warm weather, I'll fall asleep just about anywhere.

Yeah. Probably the most recent time that happened was a couple of months ago when I stayed over at my new place for one night before going back home the next day. Only problem was, I had no bedding. No duvet, no pillows, no nothing. This was at the very start of September so it was starting to get pretty cold at night. I had to take a cushion off the sofa to use as a pillow, use my cropped leather jacket as a duvet and put my jeans on over my pyjama trousers and I was still way too cold. I must've woken up at least once every hour from about half 11 until somewhere between 5 and 6 in the morning when I gave up.

No, I'm fantastic at sleeping. I can sleep basically anywhere at any time. It's waking up that I have trouble with. I sleep absurdly long hours, averaging about 10 to 14 hours a day. I'm like a fucking koala. Have more or less the same diet too.

I've always had trouble falling asleep, sometimes it can take over an hour... >.>

Plus I wake up a lot during the night, but that's not so bad usually, unless something in my room spooks me, then it takes another hour to get back to sleep. xD

Luckily I'm unemployed right now, but if I get a job it'll be a problem. Usually to try and help me get to sleep, I either keep some music on low, or get a hot water bottle. I find it easier to sleep when it's warm straight away in bed. :/

I know other people use warm drinks like milk or this Horlicks stuff (It's like hot chocolate, apparently), but those don't work for me.

Every once in a while, usually on a Sunday night before the week starts, It's just impossible to fall asleep, for a myriad of reasons I'm sure I would be contemplating, because I'm not falling asleep. Most of the time, it's just because I can't stop thinking. About something. About anything. It's a monologue in my head, thinking about the day, or the following week, or maybe I'm debating with myself back in forth in my head. But that seems to be the only thing that keeps me up. Fifteen minutes becomes forty minutes becomes an hour and a half and Christ I have an early class and a long day tomorrow why can't I just STOP?

Roll over, slam head into pillow, flip pillow over looking for the cool side. impatiently shift blankets, lay on back, stare at ceiling. Repeat.

Apparently, once I get going, racing thoughts are hard to stop. On the plus side, if I do end up falling asleep at around 1:00 AM, and then go through my school day, I'll be too piss tired to be thinking the next time around.

I still haven't found a way to deal with it, but there can't POSSIBLY be a problem with it. /sarcasm

Yes, I used to have it a lot. Mostly because I'm an evening person and I'm at my most energetic around 10/11 PM. But the problem with that is that the people who make up my college roster are clearly morning people >.< As is my girlfriend who thankfully is considerate enough not to make any noise in the morning. :p

Now that I'm working on my own project and can make my own times I don't have much trouble with getting to sleep anymore. I do now have trouble getting up in the morning though. :p So that usually translates to me getting up at 13:00 or something.

For me the title of the thread is humorous as the 'Ever' implies that there might have once been a time long, long ago in a distant galaxy or alternate dimension when I didn't have trouble falling asleep and/or staying asleep and where I might have actually felt well rested after having slept.

Haven't had a good night's sleep since my surgery on September 6th. Almost two and a half months now.

Yep. I can't get to sleep if my legs are cold for whatever reason. I will stay awake until I can get my legs warm. Last night I was in bed for two hours before I got to sleep @_@

Apparently you have insomnia (not chronic) if it takes more than 20 minutes to fall asleep.

I am a card carrying member of insomnia, so pretty much all the time. It really doesn't help that I work at all hours and I don't have a normal sleep schedule.

Nope.

As a kid I taught myself to fall asleep anywhere, anytime, no matter what. I curl up and my vitals slow instantly. I can fall asleep in 5 minutes, usually less.

When I was younger and I'd get the flu or a sickness that'd keep you in bed, I'd just sleep. I once slept for 40 hours.

Breakfast.
You wake up, you make yourself a good breakfast, next night...like a baby.

It's like a reset button.

(Less gaming, more exercising can also do the trick)
