In the current generation there are no winners. Sure some consoles might be outselling others but sales don't always equal profit. When it was released the PS3 cost $800ish to produce, sold for a $200 loss and cost sony the sale of a $1000 dollar blu-ray player.

When it was released the 360 was produced for $430ish per unit and sold for $400. Microsoft would have easily made this loss back on games except for one factor... The red ring of death. Every time a red ring happens Microsoft is legally obligated to fix it. Each one of these fixes costs them another 360.

Lastly Nintendo. The Wii at its release cost the big N $200ish per unit to produce. This means that they were the only one with a profit from console sales alone. Nintendo is also the only company not to drop the price of their system due to rather high sales. However, Nintendo has decided to put more focus on an easily amused casual audience that has been neglected by its competitors. This has alienated the "Hardcore gaming" audience driving them to Microsoft and sony and casual gamers buy like one $20 game every three months.

So what do you think? Agree? disagree? Just feel like running your mouth off? Gimme your two cents.

P.S. All these figures are relatively legit I just cannot remember where they came from, if you have links proving or disproving my figures please post them.

Sony lost the most because it had such a big change in market share; whether it's a better console or if they're getting more sales they no longer have the same dominance they had in the last generation.

Comparitively, all Microsoft and Nintendo lost was credibility (RROD for Microsoft, shit like Wii Music for Nintendo). I'm unsure as to how much of a loss Microsoft made on early RRODing consoles, based on how much they've lowered prices more recently. So they must have had a pretty big profit margin on the early 360s which they had to replace the most.

I'd say Sony. They may have made Blu-Ray a bit more popular, but the PS4 will be the runt of the 8th-Gen litter.

I blame Sony and Microsofts losses on this whole graphics arms race thing. If they werent competing to make their systems powerful their systems would be affordable to produce.

Microsoft's games department is still making money.

heaps of it.

to say that the RRoD crippled them is just silly

It's tough to say that Nintendo has "lost" in this generation, especially in comparison with the previous one. After the Gamecube, it really looked like Nintendo was on its way out of the console market in a manner reminiscent to Sega. However, the Wii has really saved the company.

Regardless of how you feel about the Wii's game library or "alienation of the hardcore", their sales have been unbelievably impressive, especially considering the fact that they have been consistently outselling the other two consoles since it was released.

We talk about this a lot on the Escapist, about the "casual" market and what it means to those of us who consider ourselves more "hardcore". You can't really blame Nintendo for seeking out relatively untapped segments of the market in order to resuscitate their console department. I've been playing video games for well over 15-20 years now, and the first video game I ever played with my mom was Wii Tennis. She loves real-life tennis, and thought Wii Tennis was great. It'll be interesting to see where Nintendo pushes the casual market in the next few years.

This race is not even close to being over so this Poll is BS. Talk to me in a couple of years.
