I think this is relevant.
Mostly I'm not too bothered. If someone wants to call themselves a nerd, that's fine. I'll engage them in conversation on various "geeky" topics. If they don't know what the fuck they're talking about, I"ll call them on it. If they do, I welcome them to the club.
2. What about individual failings? I don't think anyone who met me would doubt my geekiness, but I know I have specific gaps in my knowledge. Like I'm an anime fan but I've never really watched Naruto or Blech (have the Bleach manga instead). Or I'm a pretty big classic rock geek but I absolutely hate Pink Floyd and as such don't really listen to their stuff.
So when you say don't know what they're talking about do you mean really broad things like not knowing what an XBox is despite calling yourself a gamer or not knowing how Braid ends despite calling yourself a gamer?
