I think this is relevant.

Mostly I'm not too bothered. If someone wants to call themselves a nerd, that's fine. I'll engage them in conversation on various "geeky" topics. If they don't know what the fuck they're talking about, I"ll call them on it. If they do, I welcome them to the club.

1. Is it weird that I genuinely find that attractive?

2. What about individual failings? I don't think anyone who met me would doubt my geekiness, but I know I have specific gaps in my knowledge. Like I'm an anime fan but I've never really watched Naruto or Blech (have the Bleach manga instead). Or I'm a pretty big classic rock geek but I absolutely hate Pink Floyd and as such don't really listen to their stuff.

So when you say don't know what they're talking about do you mean really broad things like not knowing what an XBox is despite calling yourself a gamer or not knowing how Braid ends despite calling yourself a gamer?

As an aside, my girlfriend is geeky without fitting into the sci-fi/gamer ouvere, she's a massive comedy nerd and total tech head, she likes sci-fi and I'm slowly introducing her into the idea of gaming, but just because someone doesn't like the stuff you do immediately, doesn't mean they aren't a nerd.

She also has a passion for William Shatner covers.

It's the fact that so many girls use 'geek'dom as some kind of statement or fashion. You find situations such as girls wearing SNES t-shirts who don't even know that it's a real console.

This activity is definitely seen as trivialising 'geek' culture. You have people seeing these pretenders seeking (and receiving) attention for the very stereotype that they were bullied and cast out for actually identifying with during their childhood.

That can leave people pretty darn jaded. So with the rise (or simply the uncovering) of real girl gamers/geeks, they get a lot of misguided flak, which is a shame.

Could be a poorly drawn classic controller (or an even more poorly drawn SNES controller, or some variety of third party NES controller)? Of course, can you play Twilight Princess with a Classic controller (never tried, got a classic controller for Monster Hunter and emus ; never used it for anything else)? If not, than classic controller only counts if it's an emu (and there are some decent emus for the Wii).

Aye. I was lucky recently with playing GW2 that my GM is also a woman and a long time gamer. Otherwise I probably would have had to prove myself.

I think that women who 'pretend' to be geeky tend to be the most vocal ones and they give real female gamers a bad name and let misogynist asshats say 'Well look at this idiot this is what all female gamers are like' when it just isn't the case.

Bronies are the current male equivilent on the internet I'd say. For women, the claim is that they're attention whores and for men, the claim is that they're gay. The insults are a bit different, but the sentiment is the same.

As far as hostile geek circles, I think the best example is the MOBA scene. Doesn't matter what your race, gender, creed, etc is; you step into a game of League of Legends, Heroes of Newerth, or Defense of the Ancients as a new player and just let the hate wash over you.

This pretty much sums up my feelings on the matter.

Some bronies do spout their love for MLP for attention, but the majority do not. It's generally pretty easy to tell who has a genuine interest in something over a casual interest or just plain lying about their interest for some other reason.

That said, there is an issue with women (and men) that think that wearing thick-rimmed glasses or having once played Pokemon makes them 'omg such a nerd,' which is more annoying than anything else, and is clear attention-whoring. This year, it's self-proclaimed nerdism, ten years ago, it was some other fad, and in ten years it will be something else.

Its are rather negative aspect of geek culture, this whole territorialism.

I know next to nothing about music or football, and have often been trapped in conversations about them where it was increasingly apparent that I was going to be found out (like when I didn't know the name of the top striker for the team I nominally support), and you know what happened when I was? nothing they where fine with it.

I claim to be into classical music, but wouldn't have a clue what was being played if I switched Classic FM at a random time. Does this mean I don't actually like classical music? no, it doesn't. And the people I know who have a deeper appreciation than me don't call me a poser. They welcome the fact that I'm interested at all and recommend new pieces to me.

We should be doing the same. Its no good saying 'No! You are not a geek! I have decreed it! Begone and never come near anything that interests me again!'.

So when you say don't know what they're talking about do you mean really broad things like not knowing what an XBox is despite calling yourself a gamer or not knowing how Braid ends despite calling yourself a gamer?

1. The bottom one? Nope - I do, too.

2/3. I try to get a general, broad sense of them first. If they're geeky about anime, I'll ask leading questions and see what answers I get. If I get "Sailor Mars is my favorite" I'll ask which series/seasons they like best. Then if they say something like "the second" I'll say "was that the season before or after the pink-haired daughter shows up?" (Because I forget most of Sailor Moon)... and lead from there. See if they can genuinely answer the questions. If not, no big deal, they like the show but aren't interested in the fandom.

... If someone doesn't know what an XBox is, I'll just say GTFO. I'll ask what genre they play if they do know, and what games they enjoy, etc. Some people honestly want to be part of "the culture" but don't invest the time and devotion that real fans do, and that's fine. I'll help educated them.

If they're doing it to seem cool and I can tell, I'll just ask enough questions to embarass them infront of others.

I think LTTP on Wii uses the classic controller. I still have my SNES version so never bought it.

One time a guy grilled me over the original fallout games while just accepting that my male mate had played them.

I have never come across a female "Posing" as a geek. I guess it is an American thing. Like liking Red Hair, it just doesn't happen in the "Real" world.

The only female geeks I know could give me a run for my money with regards to geekdom. I was taught basic coding by a geek I wanted to sleep with, I dated a geek with a 65 minute playtime through portal 1 (I know that is not that impressive considering some speedruns, but still) you get the idea.

Maybe I have just hung around people who don't have to lie about who they are?

The closest I have come to "Geek to get attention" was a chick in my guild who used to strip on webcam for the guild master to get gear. It was annoying but not as much "Pretending" to be a geek to get things, just being a desperate enough geek to let strange Norweigens look at her boobs for gear.

Hentai manga definitely is, but normal yuri manga is more often than not shoujo manga. Meaning manga for girls.
In fact, due to the culture in Japan, both yaoi and yuri manga (non-porn) are almost always shoujo manga.
Romance isn't manly enough, especially not when something 'weird' like homosexual relations are involved.

I agree with the 2 on topic images that have been posted in responses. Personally I'm wary of disingenuous people in everything that I do and there are geeky situations where I would be more wary of women than men because they are more likely to pose as geeks (men can do it too). Mind you I generally don't care about how much someone knows about something but rather how interested they are in it.

I would guess this would be more of a problem with particular fandoms than with geekyness in general. Fledgling fans could protect themselves by the language they use (I'm really interested in X vs. I'm a big fan of X).

Incorrect. About Yuri that is - you're spot on about yaoi.

Yaoi is gay male anime/manga written by women, for women.

Bara is gay male anime/manga written by gay men, for gay men.

Yuri is lesbian anime/manga... period. It can be written by men or women, and targeted to men or women. Most yuri attracts fans of both genders, and various orientations. Many Yuri authors (around 50%) are lesbians or bisexual women. The rest (the other 50%) is written by straight or gay males.

The issue is that gay men find the relationships in Yaoi off-putting. Yaoi is very clearly a women's fantasy. Likewise, most women don't like Bara because it deals with realistic gay male relationships and is not catering to their fantasies.

On the other hand, yuri doesn't have a divide like that. It contains both. In part because stories written by lesbians are still appealing to the male reader, and in part because many (not all) of the male authors are very sympathetic to the gay/lesbian community, so don't portray the issue as pure fantasy.
