Why use either, big guns are just better. Experimental MIRV + mini nukes = easy win, 1 shot kill on everything on every difficulty.

The energy rifle you get from the offworld spaceship is awesome. Owns everything.

Small guns, mainly because guns and ammo are so plentiful, and levelling it is a great boon early on in the game. Energy weapons are just the spicy sauce for tough encounters.

I'm so annoyed that I didn't know about that when I did the quest for it, so pissed off. I have the alien weapons from Mothership Zeta though, and a bunch of mod weapons including an M14 with an interesting texture glitch)

Like in all Fallout games, I go for Small Guns in the beginning and later change to Energy Weapons. Works like a charm in all three of them*.

[sub]*I know there are more than three of them, but I have yet to play the other ones.[/sub]

Energy. I know they suck at first but they're amazing later in the game. Plus I can't deny the satisfaction of watching enemies melt into a pile of green glow.

Or disintegrate into red ash.

Cool name btw, well not exactly original but still good choice.

Small Arms early and Energy Weapons nearing twenty. With FWE on, it is more difficult and with the numerous weapons mods out there Small Arms is more attractive, but when I get me hands on FWE's P-94 Winchester Plasma, making things melt into green goo is just wonderful. That, and EVE makes it look so much prettier.

When you've got Ol' Painless, Lincoln's Repeater, the Victory Rifle and the Xuanlong Assault Rifle, you really don't need Energy Weapons. That said, A3-21's Plasma Rifle and the Mothership Zeta weapons are just plain awesome. Just max them both out and Big Guns as well. Should be easy enough.

Once I get Lincoln's Repeater, that's pretty much all I use for the rest of the game. I spend the whole game hoarding .44 ammo and Hunting Rifles just for that reason.

I like to run around with a (modded Glock-18c) silenced pistol. Does 13 DAM at 100/100, so its not unfair. And no, I can't kill a behemoth with it. I just run away.

Well the character I use the most has a melee focus, because bringing a sword to a gun fight is just fun, but when things get to much for melee I pull out my A3-21 which has can fire thousands of times because of all my conservation and just one shot people, but there are good small guns too.

Small guns. Lincoln's rifle is just awesome.

Only Energy weapon that appealed to me was the sniper out of Operation Anchorage and that has a lot to do with it being the only actual accurate sniper weapon in the game (not needing me to rely on V.A.T.S for it).

Small Guns first and Energy weapons later, as always :p You can tag energy weapons later on if you want, but by the time the decent energy weapons actually come along, you should be able to effectively put points in there without losing out on other stuff anyway.

Really, if you want to get the most out of Fallout 3 you need to get some kind of mod for it since they all add guns and stuff (As in, one of the larger overhaul mods that changes pretty much everything as well as adding a load of stuff to the game, there's no point getting littler mods unless they add some mechanic or something, since just getting a couple of guns but having the same baddies and quests is still repetetive)

Once I picked up my first Alien Atomizer, I didn't touch another weapon in the game. Plenty of ammo laying all over the place (assuming you play the DLC for it). I hit the Alien Ship around level 10 and used small guns until I had a monster stockpile of ammo that carried me through the rest of the game with ease.

You should bring down a Behemoth with it :D
It'd be epic ^^
