Can I just say Scoped Magnum? Because that's the only weapon I use. Aside from grenades. And Jack.

I prefer the small guns personally ... it's less of a ***** to find ammo, and I just plain like the weapons :D

Energy weapons are my thing, I'm a hoarder, I've got a lot of the "named" weapons and am still trying to get them all. However, I maxed out the stealth to 100 and I've got the Chinese Stealth Armor, so I can take out the toughest enemies with Jingwei's Shock Sword. Which I guess counts as an energy weapon to a certain degree.

Depends on the challenge... The sophisticated brute... The sneaky tech... Or my favorite, Degenerate Commando...

Small guns mostly, energy weapons remove any real challenge in the game. Sure while you're out shooting behemoths with a plasma rifle, I'm crawling through the sewers with an SMG going out to get a few kills so I can buy ammo. It's a game of wasteland survival,

Not "Plasma Tank 3: Mutant Purge".

Energy weapons, the custom plasma-rifle you get from Harkness (after many questin's) is so overpoewered it's hilarious.
This combined with my ludicrous stealth skill meant i could STEALTH KILL A GUY BY TURNING HIM INTO GREEN GOO.

I prefer the small guns. Only because I love the Sniper Rifle, so the higher the skill on that, the more kills I can get without using VATS. ^^ And I hate having to use VATS.

I maxed both. Not that hard, man. Fallout 3 is a very easy game.
Me too.

Energy weapons is good for the Alien Blaster, since the ammo is so limited, which makes you not want to miss with it. I like using it whenever I'm too lazy to take the time to kill a high health enemy.
I maxed out both of them to but i just ended up using all energy weps.

And if you get mothershipzeta you have pretty much infinte ammo for all the alien guns.

Small guns. Lincoln's rifle is just awesome.

Only Energy weapon that appealed to me was the sniper out of Operation Anchorage and that has a lot to do with it being the only actual accurate sniper weapon in the game (not needing me to rely on V.A.T.S for it).
Sniper? I don't remember any specail sniper rifle out of anchorage.

I'm always a thief-character, so I play the Small Guns.

Of course I use the Energy Weapons too, but not until at least level 7.
Yea. At the beginning I stick to small guns because they're so common, I basically walk out of my house/shack/stash location with a rifle and a shotgun and come back with rifles, shottys, pistols, assault rifles, and a bunch of other stuff.
Those plasma guns are very powerful and I especially like Harkness' A321 Plasma Rifle but at the beginning that's the only plasma rifle available.

Just be warned, sometimes the goo/ash piles left by energy weapons don't disappear like the body parts left by small guns. Sounds great but if you're leaving goo piles all over the wasteland, it can (from what I've heard) mess up your game and Fallout 3 doesn't need any help being buggy.

Like in all Fallout games, I go for Small Guns in the beginning and later change to energy weapons. Works like a charm in all three of them*.

[sub]*I know there are more than three of them, but I have yet to play the other ones.[/sub]
the other ones dont count, really, they dont.

i went energy weapons. you can get one in megaton, so are never without. also as above, A3-21 plasma rifle pwns

One would assume he means the Gauss Rifle which came with a scope and is indeed an Energy Weapon.

I prefer small guns, personally, because I love the shotgun and Sydney's SMG, as well as the Lincoln Repeater and the Hunting Rifle. Energy weapons just don't have that "boom you're dead!" feel that I get from actual firearms.
On my good playthrough, I also invested in Melee Weapons, for kicks. Got me a Shiskebab. It's actually really really useful, especially if you're stockpiling ammo or trying to avoid something that melees you (by backpedaling and swinging).

Big guns! Everything else is support!

In all seriousness, I do both. Both have good weapons (Scoped .44 and Plasma Rifle) and bad weapons (Chinese Pistol and Laser Pistol). I do think that some energy weapons (namely the plasma rifle) are more useful than small guns later on. Generally, I use small guns to deal with weaker enemies so I don't wear out my hard-to-repair energy weapons and big guns, and use those for dealing with tougher enemies. I'd agree that against tougher enemies, small guns smaller than .44 caliber don't tend to be that useful, but there's still plenty of raiders and mole rats that need killin'.

I maxed them both about 2/3rds through the game so it isn't really that big a problem though the enemies in the swamp DLC (I forget the name) have a ridiculous amount of health even when using the Alien Laser rifle so I just avoided that one all together.
