Neither. Go Explosives+Big Guns, only using explosive weapons from the big guns (i.e. missile launcher+fat man, not minigun+gatling laser).

Or do what I've just started: A Pacifist run. I intend to complete the game killing only the bare minimum of enemies: The Radroach at the start, the Super Mutants at the Jefferson Memorial and I might also possibly have to kill the Enclave right before the end of the game but I think I can speech check my way out of it.

I'm on my way to GNR at the moment, and it's a lot of fun. Making a crapload of money off all the guns and ammo I'm never going to use.
What exactly are you going to use that money on, if not guns or ammunition?

well i maxed out most skills since i got all the expansions i find it fun to use one of the named swords to hack people up and both energy weapons and small guns have their uses

small guns is more flexible since there is a small gun for most uses
but energy weapons fill the assault rifle gap the best

I started off using energy weapons but switched to small guns when I got the Chinese Stealth Armor and the Perforator. It let me take out basically any unit without taking any damage.

Why use either, big guns are just better. Experimental MIRV + mini nukes = easy win, 1 shot kill on everything on every difficulty.
My problem with the MIRV though was you killed one enemy with it and you had to walk for four hours to get enough nukes to reload. The fatman did the same job but was not nearly so wasteful about it.

Booze, hookers and maintaining a healthy addiction to at least three types of alcohol and four types of chems.

Also I have the Owned! mod, which allows me to buy up houses, most of which are easily over 1000 caps each (with some being over 5000 caps) so there's that too.

I made it to GNR and watched the Brotherhood take down the Behemoth. It took them *forever*. For an elite fighting force they are seriously shit shots. Next challenge: Speech checking Three Dog so I don't have to make my way to the Museum of Technology =_=

I'm not just doing the main quest. I've also done four parts of Moira's quest as well - Radiation (easy), Minefield (less easy, but still doable. That sniper doesn't run out of ammo), Super Duper Mart (Kinda tough. I made it to the food without being seen but the medicine involved me dashing around, weaving and bobbing) and Cripple Yourself (easy). Sadly, I won't be able to finish her questline as Mole Rats necessitate killing another creature, an act which I cannot abide by.

I also convinced Leo Stahl to quit his drug habit. Good job Leo!

Never used energy weapons, are they any good?

Although to be fair I preferred the good ol' shishkebab.

Nothing says "victory" like the decapitated smoldering corpse of an enemy.

I started with small guns and had Lincoln's Repeater and a sniper rifle, but eventually I ended up maxing Energy weapons too just for the Gauss Rifle (from Operation Anchorage). While it may make a lot more noise than a silenced Reservist's Rifle, it does so much damage that it makes up for it by far.

Oh man, the named plasma rifle is godlike.

The Plasma rifle i godlike, Ar-21's plasma rifle is beyond godlike and don't get me started on the Gauss rifle.

The moment I saw Energy Weapons I did not put a point into anything else until I had that around 75. So when I got my first laser pistol and rifle I was kicking butt.

Didn't really care about energy weapons until I was abducted by aliens.

Their weapons are god.

Both. Having played the first two games to death, I love playing a stealthy Small Guns + high Perception build and putting bullets exactly where I want them to go. On the other hand, Energy Weapons are plentiful and actually useful in 3. So give me Lincoln's Repeater for the headshots out in the Wasteland, and A3-21's plasma rifle for short to medium range. If someone doesn't want to go down quickly, well, that's what Bottlecap Mines are for.

Plus it's easier to loot all the bodies after a firefight when they're glowing green...

Well, with the right cheats... Oh, the fun times were VERY VERY fun.

The Owned! mod only leads to more useless money, sadly. Still a good mod. I salute your pacifist run of the game, but what are you going to do about the end of the main quest? You'll have to do something about the *SPOILER* anti-climactic boss fight. *END SPOILER*

I easily maxed both, then rolled with whatever enemies I am currently fighting are using. Or, if the enemies are monsters/don't use firearms just with whatever ammunition I have stockpiled. That being said, I always start a Fallout game with small guns.

The Char I had the moste fun with, was a Melee and Big Guns guy in Power Armor.
He became god-like when I found the named Gatling Laser (cant remember the name, only the location. (Deathclaw Sanctuary))
