Fallout and Oblivion have to be struck at the right angle. If you don't get immersed quickly you just end up wandering around with no goals in mind, board as hell.

Why are people still posting in this thread? It was started back in April. The OP has actually already at one point said he's enjoying himself much more, so I'm pretty sure he doesn't need extra advice.

What you're doing wrong is playing a game that doesn't cater to your personal preferences. /thread

People think Fallout 3 is a typical FPS, and don't understand the RPG elements! A few of my friends find it boring, and I find it fun! It depends on personal taste, for me it works!

It's one of the things they're aiming to "fix" with the New Vegas. Personally, I had no trouble, it was pretty easy as the quest log tells you where to go, but then again, once you brave Morrowind's begginings, you get used to having 0 direction :p

Either way, the game's good, but of course, your experience may vary. I'd say reroll, start over, keep an eye on quest log :)

Well try again, this time don't blow away the quest givers.
Then pop up the map it normally shows ya where to go...

If you make it a mass murder simulator, yeah your gonna be left with no direction and lonely if ya just kill anything that advances the story.

What to do:
Press the little button next to the disc tray
Remove disc
Insert Mass Effect disc
Press little button again
Enjoy

OR
You could check the walkthrough. That always helps. Besides, RPG's are a bit dull at the beginning; stick with it, it'll pay off.

Nah, so like everyone has said, don't shoot everyone. You want to have some of those NPCs alive

Let me just put the OPs complaint into real life terms.

"I bought a gun from a shop and shot the owner to see if it works, now the cops have taken me and put me in a room with no TV or computer games and I'm bored, what did I do wrong?"

When you've realised where the hypothetical real life character went wrong, you'll realise where you went wrong champ.

step three make your way to megaton
step four sell all armor and weapons you doint want at moria
step five do you wasteland survival guide
step six go to rivet city (Luis simmns will tell you if you ask)
step seven go to the science lab in rivet city
step eight talk to dr li and do here quests until you get to little lamplight
step nine STOP I REPEAT STOP explore and have fun until you have broken steel

grab some followers and let them alert you to danger. i found the suspense involved when not knowing if anyone is around to shoot me unbearable.

It may just not be the kind of game for you.
But a good tactic in Fallout 3 is NOT to kill everything with a pulse and/or is moving the first chance you get, but instead to talk to them, do some quests if they have any so you can get money and other rewards to buy guns/armor/health/ammo with.
Then once you are done with the town and everyone in it, you can go; to quote Yahtzee "Bananas biscuit crazy for a few moments" until they are dead if you so wish. Or talk to Mister Burke if you are in Megaton as he has a way of making Megaton "disappear"

It's an open world RPG. If you don't get really into the environment, atmosphere, and story, then you will get quickly bored of the game.
The first time I played Fallout 3, I didn't really like it that much, and I quit playing for a long time. Recently I created a new character and played for awhile paying more attention to the many details in the free-form quests and other things, just playing the main quests isn't as good as all of the exploration based quests.

EDIT: Also, part of the reason I didn't like the game was the exact opposite of what you are experiencing. I could run through everything on Very Hard without a sweat, since I have at least 2000 ammo for every one of my extremely powerful guns, and I have about 300 stimpacks. I can't even warrant using half of my weapons because I have too much ammo to ever need to change.

I recently got fallout 3 for the 360. At first everything was fine up until you get to the first town. I had no idea what to do/where to go and whenever I went to where the marker was it lead me to a dead-end subway station. I gave up and walked back to buy some more ammo. I was testing to see if I had any amo in any of my guns and I shot the store lady thus making everyone pissed at me. I fended them off for a good while then left the place i was using as my fort. I explored around a bit and now this is where I stand:

I have no money, no ammo, no indication of where to go, bored with repetitive environments, everyones dead and the people who arnt dead hate me.

I am frankly dissapointed because I was looking for a really solid, entertaining RPG that wasnt as text loving as ME1(or 2) or DA:O. What should I do to spice this up and make it the jaw dropping deliciousness I always hear about?

EDIT: Thank you all for your pointers and tips! I restarted a new toon and low and behold I am enjoying myself much more :)
I didn't like it, I played through the first town and though it sucked balls. It wasn't very fun to me. I guess i shouldn't have waisted my money on it cause I didn't like oblivion or morrowind either. This game just seems like a lot of boring running around, and not a lot of story.
