This guy on the greatest stealth game thread keeps saying he thinks its the greatest stealth game he's ever played, seriously go look at his arguments.
So you felt compelled to make a thread abour it...?

Far Cry 2 in general is just a repetitive tech demo... its beautiful, but that didn't keep me from trading it in for long.

I did actually use stealth on a couple of missions. Popped snipers with a dart gun and no one was the wiser, before stealthing my way into a trainyard and planting a couple of bombs and blowing shit up real good-like. Being able to spark off huge 7 kilometre long forest fires would be pure win, though. Shame the engine was so limited in that respect :(

I played most missions stealth to relieve the repetative monotony, which seems a little bit the inverse of what would have been wise. But I did most of the game in stealth so I gave it decent. It took a bit of effort but I felt good having taken out a whole camp without being spotted.

Wasn't great though. The game on the hole just dragged. I have to play it in short bursts to have fun. Long sessions are tedious.

It wasn't what I would call a success. And it's even more annoying at night when you can't see where the buggers are when they're chasing you down in the middle of a forest. After seeing you walk past from a mile away in an attempt to actually play the game.

It sucked in the meaning that it was too realistic. If you can see the enemy then it's probable that they can see you, so many times I would be closing in on an enemy and if I got anywhere inside the area of his prepheral vision he would see me.

I thought that the stealth was pretty much non-existent, only applicable when hiding behind cover, until I got the Camo suit. Holy crap, the game got 10x times better, being able to actually sneak up and machete enemies or sneak by outposts without incidents. It was my first purchase on my second playthrough.

I too am still gunning my way through the first playthrough, stealth so far has been alright - if a little unneccersary most of the time... being able to wander around unnoticed for a little bit is good, but its no MGS (or other stealth based action game) thats for true.

On the subject of forest fires, I remember during the hype they were saying about how you would be able to start fires outside of towns and bases to create chaos, allowing you to sneak in.

Tripe sir, pure tripe.

I used stealth once. Then I stabbed a guy like 300 feet away, and that apparently makes enough noise for people to hear, so I was instantly up to my bum in bullets.

In one mission in FC2, I snuck into the railyard at daybreak and evaded all enemies for long enough to plant an IED on the train car I had to blow up. I then blew it up, ran the hell out of there, and drove off.

Stealth works mainly for avoiding patrols and the like. I try to sneak up on an enemy base most of the time, but when they spot me I run in.

I don't know what you guys are talking about, I got through the game on the second hardest mode using almost only stealth. Just refrain from shooting everything you see, and stay in the dark. Although chances are once you finish the mission (assassination, explode, wipe out) they find you.

I really tried to like stealth, I really did, but I just couldn't. Some of my main problems are:
1) As many have said, the enemies always seem to spot you, even when crouched with the camo upgrade, over 200 yards away in a huge bush that's behind at least 5 cars...
2) After sneaking up on a guy who's alone and nobody near his buddies, I pull out the machete and knife him which apparently is the loudest thing you can do because suddenly the whole camp knew my exact location, I would have been better off shooting the bastard.
3) Even if you shoot a guy with a silenced weapon and his buddies aren't alerted, they seem to have a tendency to get really suspicious and always get a strong urge to all circle around and check out the bush you're hiding in. This really messes things up, because even if I'm rather successful at stealth, I can usually only get 4 or 5 of the guys if I'm lucky, before his buddies come sniffing around my bush.
4) The guard outposts, I mean you get all of your stealth gear and drive along to the target camp, ready to fight and kill people. But hold on, it seems some guards spotted you driving along and decided to follow you or the asshole designers put an outpost right outside the camp, meaning you've got no chance of killing people in that camp silently anymore.
5) And finally, the locations. You want to climb up on top of a nice cliff and snipe your target quietly before slipping away? Sorry, not gonna happen. Why? For some reason, the designers seem to have made the majority of camps a complete circle, surrounded by steep and unclimbable hills, leading to only one or two paths into the camp where guards love to hang around, with your target hidden right in the middle of a house, meaning you're not killing him unless your ass goes in that house.

There are many more issues with the stealth in this game, such as the MP5 not being quiet at all as well as limited ammo for the silent guns, but there's no point in ranting any further.

I was too busy focusing on the game's other flaws to pay attention to the stealth aspect. Speaking of which, I was surprised I played the game for as long as I did.

The hell? Stealth worked awesome for me in that game, especially when I had the camo and dart gun. I would shoot and then change positions.. worked for me every time. Even if they could pinpoint where the shot came from, I was just someplace else. The only time I ever got caught is when I got careless.
Same, I would just roll in with a silenced MP5 and headshot and good sir who was in my path. I thought stealth worked excellently.

I could pull off a few missions using stealth, but its not the best way to play the game.

aphshams got it. The game did stealth very, very well. Most of you, from the sounds of it, had no idea how to be stealthy in the game.

Even though the silenced weapons and camo suit were useless I still found it took the enemy AI ages to react to advanced tactical moves like crouching behind a barrel and occasionally I could just walk up to the dozy farts and introduce them to cousin machete.
