Of all the games coming up in the pre-Christmas gaming extravaganza of this year, there are some solid contenders for 'Best Game of the Year'. Fable 2 promises massive expansion upon the original title, which for all its flaws, was still a solid game.

Fallout 3 looks set to win as many new fans as it promises to alienate the 'Hardcore' Fallout crowd, but nevertheless looks set to improve upon Bethesda's Oblivion not only through style, but content.

But when it comes to pushing the ganre and franchise forward, you can't look any further than Far Cry 2. Abandoning the original concepts of mutants, special ops lunatics and terrible hawaiian shirts, this time around, we're plunged headfirst into the African heart of darkness, embroiled in a civil war between government loyalists and seperatist rebels, taking the role of one of eight mercenaries in a bid to assassinate the shady sepctre of 'The Jackal', an arms dealer with a fearsome reputation for bloodshed.

Even if you've only taken a passing glance at this game, yu'll at least know how jaw-droppingly beautiful this game is - the new Dunia engine is already looking gorgeous, but beneath that gloosy, albiet bloody and gritty veneer beats the heart of a truly groundbreaking FPS. Any game where you may be forced to choose between leaving a friend to die in agony, or putting a gun to their head and cutting their suffering short yourself, clearly isn't aiming to emulate Halo.

Thank God.

I could spend all day wittering on about this, but suffice to say, checking out a few of the links below should equip you with enough knowledge to make you make a beeline to your nearest gaming outlet to pre-order, because 10 will get you 1 that this will fly off the shelves faster than an heroin laced with chocolate.

Ladies and Gentlemen, discuss what may be the best game of the year. Perhaps even the current decade.

I dont think it will be the game of the year, but the premise is great. And, since it comes to the PS3, I´m probably gonna get it. But im saving up for SR2 and Fallout.

Well, PC Gamer gave it a 94% rating, which is straying into the Half Life zone of 'Best Games Ever' territory.

What?! No-chance! It looks pretty good, but how can you even rate a game before it has come out?

There's such a thing as pre-release, gaming magazines will sometimes get a game direct from the developer for review to boost release sales. After all, this is the Christmas season, I should expect early reviews of Fallout and Fable 2, as well as other titles some time before their release date.

I signed up just to point this out, because I can't stand ignorance. GameTrailers gets a pass because there's nothing I can do to help those poor souls, but I expect much better from the people at The Escapist.

Far Cry 2 is not made by Crytek, nor does it use the CryEngine or CryEngine 2. When Crytek left Ubisoft for EA, Ubisoft kept the rights to the Far Cry name as well as all the intellectual property associated with it. Crytek went on to make a little game called Crysis and later Crysis Warhead (you may have heard of them), using a new engine called CryEngine 2. Crytek did not create the Far Cry Instincts spin-off series on the Xbox, either; that was done by Ubisoft. Ubisoft's own internal team is working on Far Cry 2, the same people who are responsible for Instincts, and they are building the game with a new engine called Dunia; although based on the original CryEngine, only a minuscule amount of code from it remains (i.e. the stuff that couldn't be improved upon).

Please, we know you want to impress people with your nice big forum thread that attempts to sum up the holiday 2008 season of games, but do your research before you post. It'll make you look smarter, it'll save me time and effort in doing the research for you.

Cool never really bothered looking into far cry 2 (played the first one for a bit) but after reading about it i think its now on a my shopping list.

I like the idea of the guns getting grimy over time then jamming, although it might be slightly annoying if you've been carrying a pistol around since the start of the game and not using it, only to get in a gun fight right at the end and have it explode in your hand.

I preordered it, and probably expect it to be the...more or less "sleeper hit" of 2008 (I know the game was announced way back and is built upon a popular franchise, but it is still less "hype-tastic" than Fallout 3 and Fable 2)

It has a great concept that rarely worked in the past (open, fully free form gameplay and storytelling), and does not overdo it with fantastic promises and features (i'm looking at you, Mr. Wright and Mr. Molyneux). After all, the idea of being free to choose how and what do you do in the game (as long as you kill others doing it) is nice enough.

Also, the Level Editor looks awesome.

Ditto - although it seems custom maps will only be available to other players on the same format. So no swapping between PC, 360 and PS3, alas.

One of my favourite XBOX games. Exctited by this but am learning the hard way not to get too excited.

Probably the only game I've actually allowed the hype to infect me for.

"How do you stop a man who has the power to turn a nation into a wasteland?"
"They'll send someone."

F*** yeah.

If it's anything like the trailers and interviews, it'll definitely be worth the pre-order I put out. However, a lot of recent games have looked great while performing awfully, so I'm holding my breath for the release date...

The degrading guns thing seems kind of annoying though.

I follow you in the way of your Thank God. ^^

But where is then the possibility to hold the Hand of the Dying friend of yours?

As long as edges like these are not added games always feel at last a little unshaded (or not rounded up) enough to me, but even thougth it is one game i have to watch for.

The only Problem is that those late months of 08 are full of promising games like Fable2, Fallout3, Sacred2, Gears of War 2, Little Big Planet.... i could go on like this endlessly.

It will be an challenge to balance this part of my life with the other also very important tasks and enjoyment of your daily lifes. ^^

There IS just NOW.

The map editor in the first one was pretty good so hopefully this should be just as good. I got a feeling it will be a jump mappers dream :D

Also does anyone know the PC specs for this game? i cant get on other gaming sites from work.

I think Ubisoft stated they are going to release a utility in the weeks before release so players can find out if their system can run the game, and how weel, giving framerate specs, etc.
