I've never played any of those except CoD, which I won't vote for.

So I'll say "Titan Quest", an underrated gem.

i didnt put diablo 2 on the list because i consider it a rpg and it is old. all the games on the list are recent, or have recent incarnations. i know it is not that specific. as for the "i dont play games", it was a mistake and i meant to put "i dont play hack and slash games". but diablo 2 is better than all of the choices.

Diablo? Onimusha? Where'd you guys go?

If we're fixating on more recent games then how about Arkham & Borderlands? They're debatable as hack & slash but I could still feel good about voting for one of those.
arkham would be more of an action adventure, and borderlands is a fps

From the list: God of War. It had a shit ton of potential (which it completely dropped for subsequent forays into random god killing for the sake of one man's manliness) and the first had such a startlingly wonderful story.
Otherwise, I'd pick Neopets: PetPet Adventures: The Wand of Wishing. That's right.
It was incredibly well done, had an incredibly adorable art style, could be challenging if choosing not to abuse some overpowered weapons, and was all around fun. ^^

I like God of War. I remember the hack and slash title "Dark Cloud". I think I played for 3 hours before the tedium got to me.

Bad poll options. Dynasty Warrior and Diablo and somewhat Devil May Cry (only played the first and some of the second) for me thanks.

Blah blah blah, . The only one of those I actually own is Darksiders, and I haven't started it yet. There are plenty of others (from the past three decades, not just the past three years) that I have played and liked, though. Depending on how broadly you interpret hack-and-slash, I'd nominate stuff like No More Heroes and Zeno Clash (at least in spirit), several of the old 2D brawlers, some action-heavy RPGs like Secret/Legend of Mana, and even D&D (where the term came from), depending on the group you play with. And of course obviously ARPGs like:

An Internet for you, good sir. I was sad at first when I saw the list of games in the poll, and then I was more sad that it took so long for people to complain about the lack of what's traditionally been considered hack-and-slash, but then I was happy that someone mentioned Titan Quest before I did. I was really surprised by how much fun I had with it, considering that I could never really get into Diablo. Any year now the remains of the TQ team will finish/release Grim Dawn. In the meantime, stuff like Torchlight has been pretty decent.

And that's the one I've been playing the most recently, too. It's fun sometimes to just run through an instance and smash everything that moves (and most things that don't). Go figure that the first MMO (well, pseudo-MMO; it feels more like medieval-themed PSO) I actually like is Korean, when normally I hate those the most out of all of them.

Just because it's not recent doesn't mean that it can't still be a favourite game for many people. Also, it pretty much completely perfected the top-down, hack and slash, adventure genre. Ever wondered why there were pretty much no games like it released after it was? Because nothing could significantly improve what diablo 2 did already. I'll say this now: It's pretty much as perfect game as we're gonna get for a long time. I also hold Starcraft in that fashion as well. However, I feel Starcraft is too perfect for it's own good, I could never find any enjoyment in playing it. So anyway, back to your original point, I most definitely feel that it is an RPG, but even more, one of the big ones.

Phew, that took so much effort. I also realise that you weren't disagreeing with my statement that Diablo 2 is good. I'm just arguing for the sake of arguing. Sorry.

Fuck thinking.

Diablo 3 will be out sometime soon, and I'm betting you can replicate the experience by playing Diablo 2 while imagining polygons.

Badly confusing genres aside, my favorite game of this sort is Darksiders. Everyone seems pretty gung-ho for Bayonetta or DMC, with their "witty" excesses, but I think every ounce of their "style" is cringe-worthy. Give me Darksiders -- superior writing, tone, and design. Derivative to a fault, sure, but damn if it wasn't sweet riding that flaming horse through the desert.

When you talk about good Hack & Slash games, you're usually talking about three groups of games: old school arcade games (Ninja Turtles, Simpson, X-men), Koei games (Dynasty Warrior, Samurai Warriors, Dynasty Gundam), and Capcom games (Devil May Cry, Onimusha, and I'm counting God of War and Bayonetta even though they are only tangentially related to Capcom). And that's not counting "click and die" Diablo style games, and RPG's with real time battles like Kingdom of Hearts, Rogue Galaxy, or Star Ocean.

It's hard to pick favorites with long running series like those, but let me try to name the top five you should play along with some reasons why you should:

5. Streets of Rage 2 - Is a Beat-'em-up the same as a Hack & Slash? In any event, this one is a classic from the old Sega Genesis. There's a character that fights with roller blades. Has co-op gameplay. You can also pick up weapons dropped or thrown by enemies.

4. Onimusha 2: Samurai's Destiny - A samurai legend fighters demons, with magic elemental weapons: lightning katana, flame claymore, ice spear, wind double-sided sword, earth hammer. Multiple story paths you can follow, which alters the ally that fights along side you and has playable missions. Allies to choose from include: a drunk monk, ninja, pirate with guns, and hot fencer girl. Plus you get the honor of fighting Gogandantantess, the greatest swordsman of all demons. Sorry Dante.

3. Devil May Cry - If you're looking for a difficult Hack & Slash, look no further . . . good luck at max difficulty. You're going to die. A lot. Dante fights with a lightning sword, flame brass knuckles, two pistols, a shotgun, and a grenade launcher. The first boss is a giant lava spider.

2. God of War - Why so many games nowadays have daggers on chains, quick time events, and giant epic bosses. With all the violence and tragedy turned into good gameplay you'd expect from David Jaffe, the guy who brought us Twisted Metal.

1. As previously mention, the best Hack & Slash is:

Dynasty Warriors 4
The game is a series of battles from the "Romance of the Three Kingdoms." There is a giant counter of how many enemies you killed. Co-op gameplay, so you can be competitive with your count, Gimli and Legolas style.

Weapons include: swords (rapier, BFS, duel, saber, long sword, cutlass, etc), spears (pike, halberd, double-sided, trident, lance, etc), clubs (rod, duel rods, giant chuí mace, duel chuí, magic staff), scythe, fans, boomerang, claws, flute, chakrams, bows, horses, and ELEPHANTS. Needless to say the game has lots of playable characters, more than any other game of the series, each with their unique story with multiple paths of battles you can follow with each. The game also has a ton of unlockable items, the best requiring you to fulfill specific missions in specific battles.

Finally, you should probably run after you hear: "Is that who I think it is? It's Lubu. Lubu come to destroy us."

None of those. Surprised that Dynasty Warriors, Diablo, and Spartan didn't make the list. But my favorite is Kingdom Under Fire. (Heroes, then Crusades) But it isn't too popular so I would be surprised to see it on the list.

what? no dynasty warriors, or sengoku basara? i am disapoint.

my favourites are none of those, first and foremost, zone of the enders: the second runner, after that comes sengoku basara and dynasty warriors plus its spinoff dynasty warriors gundam

well i dont know how your defining hack n slash...

it seems like your putting fighting games?

therefore i will say FF dissidia, probably my favorite fighting game ever invented. nuff said.

however, if you were talking about dungeon crawlers, i would say diablo (oh and fuck off to my friends, they argued to bloody hell that diablo 1 and 2 are the best rpg's they have ever played)
