I always played male Shepard for some reason. He just seems more badass to me. I tried playing as femshep in MassEffect 2, but I just couldnt get into it for some reason. Which is strange, since I prefer playing as female chars in many other games, just because its less tiring staring at female buttocks bobbing on the screen than male.

Then, because I never finished Mass Effect 1 and couldn't carry my save over, the game automatically said that I had to have saved potential love interest Kaiden instead of not love interest Ashley. Ashley was my favorite squad-buddy next to Wrex, come on. And I figured, since the 'sort of' default of Mass Effect 1 was for Wrex to get gunned down for turning agro on Shepard, that Wrex wouldn't be alive either. So, with my favorite squad rollout trumped, I didn't play much of Mass Effect 2, or as FemShep. So, what is my opinion on the matter anyway?

All you had to do was download the file that most closely resembled your wishes for ME1's completion. Unless of course you bought the series for a console, which would be... unfortunate.

OT, I went Femshep from start to finish. Maleshep's voice actor was fucking garbage, it's true, but when I'm given the choice I go fem regardless of VA. I get nothing out of playing a male PC unless I'm self-inserting...

And I never do that.

- Renegade female Shepard is an I don't care what you think type who is incredibly sardonic and often has a bad temper.
So, she's Janeway?

OP: I play as fem!Shep, mostly so I can get in bed with Garrus. Garrus... oh you sexy beast...
<spoiler=SEXY>

Now, why can't we romance Wrex?
CAPTCHA: BOuncy ball. Oh, yes.

I have Shepards of both genders, but I always preferred female Shepard due to the superior voice acting.

Jennifer Hale actually puts some nuance into her voice. Mark Meer alternates between sounding bored and sounding hungover. Although, to be fair, he did improve over the course of the series. Then again, so did Hale, so dude-Shep was still left in the dust throughout.
Except for humor. Hale does nuance and emotion better than Mark Meer, but he is way better at being funny. His deadpan delivery is hilarious, especially in Citadel.

It's FemShep for me, seeing as I've played as her for over 500 hours of game. So ManShep is gonna come off as weird to me since I've gotten so used to hearing Hale's voice.

Eh, I guess.

He certainly says "Big stupid jellyfish" better, I'll give him that.

Played both quite a bit, FemShep all day, every day. Meer goes from being a shitty robot in ME1 to being merely mediocre in 2 and 3. It's jarring listening to how "human" all the characters sound then listening to his flat affect nonsense. Act the script, don't read it. And it actually would go unnoticed in any other game, considering I think most voice acting ranges from poo to passable, but since that series actually has really good voice actors, it's readily apparent. Then on the other hand, we have Hale who understands it's more about how you say something than what you say. It's not a fair comparison, it's like comparing the New York Knicks to a Big Sky team.

Femshep was just voice acted better. Plus Jennifer Hale's voice sensually stroking my eardrums is always a plus. I rolled a Maleshep afterwards and the voice acting just was not as good. He always sounded like a dick no matter what he was saying.

Depends on the game.

The first one was more along the lines of a cheesy space opera, so MaleShep's hammy acting fits better with the "big damn heroes" role. However, as the latter two games take a turn for the dark and grim (a.k.a. grimdark :p ), FemShep's gritty dry tone starts to fit in better. Particularly in the last game, MaleShep just feels out of place, like he's been transplanted from a different game.

I prefer Femshep. We need more strong female protagonists, the voice-acting's a lot better, and she has way better romance options then Maleshep. I still kinda wish that you could have a polygamous relationship though. Shep of either gender/Tali/Garrus needs to happen.

Male Shepard always.

He is an icon within himself. Fem sheps look was redesigned because she looked boring. Imagine if that was done to a character people liked a lot! take Dante for instance everyone hated his redesign. But no one cared when femshep was redone.

They are the same character and all that its just that Man Shepard is the superior half of the character.

Also take the community content for instance...

Its clear who is more popular despite the poll.

I prefer Femshep. The role just feels right with her. I've never been a "Put yourself into the role" kinda person and Shepard seemed to just work better with Femshep I felt. 17 playthroughs of the original without a single decision change... I am not sure why :p

Mark Meer is a terrible voice actor (Especially in ME2) so I play Femshep just for that reason.

Pretty much the only reason to play Male Shepard is to romance Tali or Jack other than that he's just a waste of hot air.

I always tend to play like myself and customize my characters to look like me in rpgs for the most part, so male shep is a definite for me. I don't get all the hate for maleshep and love for femshep. I don't notice anything wrong with Mark's lines while whenever I hear Hale she just sounds so bored.

MaleShep, for a few reasons. One, I feel it's easier to connect with a character I'm playing if it's a male. Two, I prefer Mark Meer's voice in general to Hale ( Not knocking her, she's also great, but I just prefer Meer), and especially how I played Shepard. He was a Paragon Soldier who was fiercely loyal to his shipmates and would never give up, no matter the situation - a basic "leader" type, I guess. And I just felt that MaleShep's voice work was more appropriate to this type of character.

Male shep.

Although I am a big fan of Jennifer Hale her acting in Mass Effect felt really underwhelming considering her talent and I feel alot of people prefer her just because of her other work. Mark Meer isn't the greatest voice actor but he actually felt like a Commander, that and his renegade options were always hilarious.

Also I am a dude, and in a game with a romance element it is pretty bloody important that I can relate.
