Hey mods, I understand if you lock this thread or something, but could I just get some quick love for Final Fantasy XIII? Haters, you're always welcome too. Gottah have lots of opinions to make the dinner table ring. Inbetweeners, well, wouldn't be a lake without duckies. So what's the word? Can I get a HEY-YO for that Final Fantasy XIII?

I cannot wait to play this game! But it will be a while before I do so. That makes me a sad panda...

EDIT: As for the love: I have only disliked two Final Fantasy games (FFT:A and FFX-2) so there's a great chance that I will love this one.

Sure...uh...

HEY-YO!

I love the linearity. I don't want it to open up in Chapter 11...I'm on Chapter 8. In Nautilus.

While I haven't finished the game yet, I can already say that Final Fantasy XIII will, at worst, rank as my third favorite numbered Final Fantasy (which would put it fourth overall once Tactics is included).

I enjoy everything about the combat system. The story is brilliant thus far.
I even wish that more RPG's would be brave enough to streamline travel by pretty much removing "random wandering" from the game (obviously, this wouldn't apply to games that are supposed to be open worlds).

HE-YO!! I am enjoying it thus far, even if it has strayed from the openess of previous titles, its still an great play. Beating the hell out of big monsters with only 2 scantily clad girls and a 12 year old boy is pretty fun.

It's as linear as they get and from what I've seen the entire game is all about going from point A to point B and killing everything in between. The battle system looks somewhat interesting but I can't get myself to like it because it's turn based. The somewhat cliche characters, boring story and terrible voice acting seal the deal for me however.

Fair critiques. I agree to most of what you're saying, but not to the degree that you're saying it. It seems that the shortcomings you've listed above are deal-breakers for you. That's understandable. Are you a fan of JRPGs in general, if you don't mind me asking? The stories are usually pretty gumball. I find it endearing, but most people I know that are over the age of 20 find the storytelling style pretty irritating. (I for one cannot even begin to figure out what kind of ridiculous accent Vannile has. I want to say South African/Australian or something, but it really just sounds like she's kind of downy, you know?) The linearity of it is a little off-putting too. Thing is, I can't make myself not like the linearity of it. The battles are so fun, that I don't really notice much that I'm just going in a straight line. I've also found a number of spots pre-Pulse to grind, so I've been having fun just sort of going back and forth b/w save points, figuring out the best possible combos to kill baddies with for the most points. I'm really having a great time...lol. It'd be interesting to see what you think of the game once you get out into the crazy openness of Pulse, and have all of the game's features unlocked. It's pretty sweet. You did say that you don't like turn-based stuff though, so maybe not...

I'm only going to get to play this in May at the earliest, so that kinda sucks. I'm super stoked for it though.

So you haven't actually played it?

But I'll amuse you anway:

Isn't almost every game about moving from point A to B and kill everything between? And when did linearity become inherently bad again? You know, besides those trends they make up at GT or somewhere without any logic.

Also, how is turn-based inherently bad again? Not that ATB, especially in FFXIII is exactly turn-based in the traditional sense of the word.

Bad voice acting, no. Sloppy translation and voice directing perhaps. It avoids being horrible however. As for clichéd characters... Well, they start as such, but keep getting better as the story progresses, which I believe is a perfectly good way to handle character development.

Battle system has to be the most fun of a FF game so far. Paradigm shifts are addicting.

The story (as of Chapter 10) is very good. Even now, you don't really know for sure who the final boss is, although you have a pretty damn good idea. It's amazing how they got everyone's side-story to intertwine in some way, especially when some of these "intertwinings" cause some stress for the characters.

Can't wait for the hunt things though. They're gonna be a blast!

No, I'm not a fan of JRPG's in general and I was thinking of giving FF13 but...yeah.

Yep, but there's a difference. In Fallout for e.g. I did have to go from point A to point B but in between doing so I had the option of straying from the path and doing something else. I never felt like I was being forced to go from A to B.

Axeli said:

I never said it was bad. I simply do not enjoy linearity in RPG's.

Axeli said:

I never said turn based combat is bad, I simply stated that I PERSONALLY do not enjoy turn based combat.

The Japanese voice acting might be better, I don't know, but the English voice acting is just plain horrible. The voice acting of that red haired ***** is ESPECIALLY annoying.

:D

Me too. I'm loving the linearity of it. I don't know why people are so pissed off about it. Pretty much every FF game is linear to some extent, but I'm glad this one's straight forward and doesn't bullshit around with NPC dialog that doesn't make a bit of difference or anything like that.

So far, its my favorite Final Fantasy even though I just beat the first pair of Eidolons.

Oh, dude. Sorry. I wasn't trying to say that South Africans and Australians sound the same. I was just saying that Vanille sounds like she's trying to decide between which of the two accents she actually has. (And that she sounds like she's a little downy-which means down-syndromy. Again, not meant to insult. Just really how she sounds.)

No it's cool man, I was just kidding. I actually can see how people could get mixed up between the two.

Inbetweener here. Game's cool but the levelling sucks. I prefer open worlds but it's still pretty cool...[small]not as good as Heavy Rain[/small]

ok, no. Just no. That idea is terrible and you should be publicly shamed for thinking it and posting it.

I do not want a straight corridor to pass itself off as a game. Those qualities can remain with Final Fantasy; keep it OUT of the mainstream, thanks.

Also what is with the japs and melodrama? It seems like every jrpg has shitty melodramatic crap all over the place. Why?
I'll say it again.
Yes. Just yes.

Not everyone loves to wander around aimlessly for hours at a time simply to end up in exactly the same spot anyway. I don't typically care for dungeon crawls, nor do I enjoy sandbox RPG's ala Oblivion. Get to the point and keep the story flowing. Technically, Final Fantasy games aren't particularly bad about aimless wandering anyway, so I think 13 is a step in the right direction for that style of game.

So far, I've dropped around 20 hours in to the game. I think it's fairly linear, but to a point. The developers have a huge story to tell and want to do it through lengthy gameplay rather than quick cutscenes or recaps.
Personal opinion: Slow in the beginning, picks up around hour 12-14, and since I've only played to hour 20 I'd say that's the most fun I've had on FFXIII.
