It is because genre wars brought in waves of new people who are unadjusted to the escapist.
You beat me to it.

Anything that brings in new members will tend to generate a lot of posts from those with shorter attention spans at first. Out of that lot, presumably some of them will get it out of their system and become 'calmer' forumites, many will get bored and move on and just a few will keep buzzing around making poorly-typed versus threads between religions or asking whether liking Halo makes you stupid. And some of the rest will quietly take their place as upstanding members of the community.

A few months from now, when a new "what brought you to the Escapist?" thread comes up, there will probably be a few "Genre Wars" between the pages and pages of "Zero Punctuation".

Do you think that Genre Wars really brought in a large number of new people, though?

I guess you do - I mean, you wouldn't have said you did if you didn't - but I really don't see people discovering The Escapist through Genre Wars. I see it more as a fun game that provides an additional way in which forum members can interact.

And take out their aggressions on each other.

I don't know what volume of traffic it brought in, but I've noticed a few people in the past week or two who have a low post count and nearly all their forum badges are from Genre Wars.

You should've made a more interesting thread.
You should have contributed something to the conversation.
Secondly, this isn't a couple's bickering session, just a note. Yes I'm a hypocrite.

...Are you calling The Escapist retarded?

Oh, wait. Algernon was the mouse right? So you're calling The Escapist a mouse? How dare you sir!

Anyway, I don't know. I hope not.

OK.

So very this.

I think it's more of a case of more and more users coming in. More and more users that refuse to read the guidelines. More and more users that create vapid and meaningless posts and threads that drown out anything intellectual in its wake.

The thing is, the ratio of 'good' members to 'bad' members have remained the same. Just the number of users have jumped severely over the year, making it harder to moderate (quite possibly the reason for Alex_P's graduation to Modhood) and downing out the intellectuals more and more as the days go by. I think that this is most likely what we're noticing.
