Poll: (for metal fans) Your favourite sub-genre of metal?

Well, always good "Ye Olde Metale" like Iron Maiden, but in terms of subgenre, it is the One True Metal - Power Metal. God damn beautiful lyrics, proper focus on vocals and I like the effect achieved by keyboards coupled with metal instruments.

Swedish power metal kings, Sabaton, are the masters of this, and they sing about war, which makes me very happy indeed.

Sludge metal (Iron Monkey, Graves at Sea, Buzz*oven etc.) or really raw black/death metal (Blasphemy, Axis of Advance, Revenge etc.). Something about raw, chaotic and underproduced metal appeals to me far more than the excessively polished style which just sounds too safe and sanitized to these ears.

If you like stuff that's a little rough around the edges production wise, might I suggest you give this a whirl:


I like a little bit of everything, though if I have a particular predaliction it's for Progressive Metal, I love experimental songs that flow seemlessly between different sections, genres and ambiences within minutes, that kind of songs that really take you on a journey.

Either Gothic metal (such as Moonspell, Deathstars or Night Wish)
Black Metal (such as Beheamoth and Immortal)
Or Mathematical Metal (such as Meshuggah, Periphery or Tesseract)

Most Metal is good though. But really These genres are my favorite. I used to love Thrash above all. But now... not so much. (still good but)

maybe its just a progression thing... Starting to like other affiliated genres more these days (such as Punk etc)

Sludge and doom, especially the more melodic/complex bands in those genres (Mouth of the Architect, Ea, Skepticism, Funeral, etc). Also drone (Sunn O))), Earth).

EDIT: Oftentimes djent will tickly my fancy (Atlanticore, Vildhjarta, etc) if I want something a bit faster.

Post-metal (Isis (fuck yeah isis), some of Neurosis's stuff like "The Eye of Every Storm", Rosetta, etc), definitely.

Shoegaze (namely Alcest and Chuter, if Chuter is considered "metal").

Industrial. The darker the better--P.H.O.B.O.S. blows my mind like nothing else.

Also Aria. They're like Iron Maiden but Russian, and in my opinion, many times better.

And Mushroomhead. Not sure what genre they technically are, but I fucking love their album XIII.

Ah yes you can't go wrong with the first couple of Ulver albums (funnily enough your avatar caught my eye whilst I was browsing the forums earlier). I've tried so many times to appreciate their later, more avant-garde material, which many assure is me phenomenal, but it seems my brain is hard-wired for metal and little else unfortunately. I have been known to listen to anything from Symphonic to Thrash, but I really enjoy Folk and Power metal, very few genres can compare to those two.

Melodic and Progressive Death Metal for me. I'm a fan of the likes of Dark Tranquility, Into Eternity, Insomnium, Amon Amarth, Augury etc. Watching Metalocalypse was what got me into metal.

sabaton are an awesome band, they are one of the few bands out there that get better with each album. Screaming eagles is such a powerful song.

Nearly ALL of their songs are exceptionally powerful, and at times (and this is rare in metal) moving.

Songs about really tragic events, like the Warsaw uprising of 1944, and even the Holocaust.

Seriously, people reading this thread - listen to Sabaton, even if power metal isn't your thing, give a couple of their songs a try.

It's not all tanks and explosions - they express real emotion about the sheer scale of death and destruction of our conflicts, as well as fiercely supporting the "right guy" (they are not pro-war or Neo-Nazis).
