...ALESTORM!
[EDIT]

Also, everyone should <3 Van Canto

OMG! Someone else said Alestorm! I figured I was gonna be the only person here to list them as one of their favorite bands. Alestorm Rocks!
The fact that both Alestorm (A Scottish/Irish Pirate Metal Band) and Van Canto (An A Capella Metal Band) exist makes me glad to live in this world.

Crazy awesome unique cases like them aside though, I mostly listen to symphonic/melodic/power metal. I started with DragonForce but was delighted to eventually learn there were whole genres of bands out there that did what they did in different and wonderful ways.

Favourites include Sonata Arctica, Kamelot, Epica and Eternal Tears of Sorrow. I've also just recently found a new favourite in Tyr. And some of my other favourite bands that I'm not quite sure how to define include Alcest and Dream Theater.

EDIT: In case it wasn't entirely clear, I also love Alestorm and Van Canto very much.

I don't really have a favourite. Progressive, symphonic, alternative, power, some heavy--if I like the lyrics, and the music makes me want to jump up and make a 'tard of myself, then I'm happy. That said, I can't stand black metal or any kind of music that makes me want to trample kittens.

Probably my favorites are Neue Deutsche Härte, Industrial (I know that NDH is a form of industrail but I distinguish between them), Alternative, and Nu Metal.

I generally go for anything, but my (un)holy trinity would be progressive metal, melodic death metal and folk metal.

Umm... I think my favorites would be Power and Progressive metal. At least that's what most of my metal collection falls into according to my mp3 player.

Not really too sure what those two sub-genres entail though.

I got into metal through power metal, so I' got a bit of a soft spot for it. I really like Gamma Ray and Helloween. I would also consider pirate metal bands like Alestorm to be power metal.

I've really been getting into more stuff like Sevendust and Five Finger Death Punch. I'm even going to a Sevendust show this December.

Progressive and melodic death metal. I don't know why I like death metal the most... To be honest I find most straight death metal to be pretty boring. But I like the progressive style because it's so diverse and always at the cutting edge of music. Also I find sometimes a lot of metal focuses too much on the brutality and distortion it loses the musicality. That's why I like the melodic style. I mean why would anyone want music that doesn't have melody to it? But I'm not really in to the Gothenburg sound style of melodeath, I prefer other styles.

Not quite sure what these subgenres are called, but this shit kicks ass:
Electric Wizard is doom metal and Between the Buried and Me is deathcore.

I kinda want to get into Gothic Metal
what would you say is teh bestest Gothic Metal band =D?
This is difficult. As many different groups have very different sounds. For example Gothic Metal also covers Symphonic metal. There are also many other genres that are based off of gothic metal. As a result it would be best (in my opinion) to look up a list of bands (off wikipedia for example). Then go to a resorce such a youtube and listen/watch.
Much more than this I cannot say as something like moonspell is often very much black and/or death metal. Thus making it very difficult to actually pin down for you.

Deathstars are industrial metal, they're just dressed up as goths. Nightwish are more power metal.
I Suppose this is the problem with having an extrememly large number of sub-genres... Some overlap and then people interpret them differently...
Still you right though. Its just that if I had actually said Industrial metal I would of had to of added it to my list (and I am rather lazy).

I really like Doom/Death Metal, Symphonic Metal, Folk Metal, etc. I'm not sure why though.

Power Metal - Favourite sub genre.

Scar Symmetry, Draconian, Sonata Artica, Firewind, Lunatica

Symphonic Metal

Wintersun, Nightwish, Darkmoor, Apocalyptica etc
I think Draconian is Power Metal. It's more doom metal for me. But oh well.

Also, don't forget about Haggard, in my opinion the best symphonic metal band ever.

Nice of you of mentioning Sonata Arctica BTW.
