If playing a warrior, I prefer an axe.

I know a sword is generally more effective than an axe in most situations- but there's just something so satisfying about lugging the huge thing around and knocking heads.

The battleaxe for me. It's really slow but if I calculate the distance just right, I'll strike first. My axe is a daedric axe that has a paralysis enchantment for 1 second that knocks most to the ground, giving me two or more extra blows as they try to get up. A lot of fights are usually one-sided as my Nord is level 37.

As stated, this is an inquiry for those adventurers in Skyrim that prefer the use of visceral melee/weapon-based combat.

Which MELEE (which means close, individual combat) weapon type is your favorite, and why?

See, I started off with bows and magic, but now that I'm sufficiently experienced with those, I'm going to start improving my melee weapon skills and wanted some advice on which to chose. I'm thinking of dual axes for maximum viking powah, but I'm also partial to maces.

I'm also intrigued as to the ratio of said weapon types to players, so I'll try and include a poll. (Apologies if it gets eaten, of course.)
Primarily i'm a bow person, but occasionally i'll get out the dagger to do a 30x sneak bonus kill on someone.

I usually use a dagger 'cuz it has a 15x sneaking bonus damage (I'm a sneaky guy), but when things get messy I use a sword, either a real or conjured one.

Battleaxe or dual-wield war axe and dagger or spell. I like swords, but it's Skyrim and there are Nords and well...there should be axes.

I last ran around dual-wielding Legendary Daedric swords.

It was pretty much the best thing ever.

My Dunmer runs around with a Greatsword, it can end fights pretty fast even against tougher enemies with suddenly kill animation.

As a Warrior, I'd say go with the Warhammer. As slow as it swings, it's worth every hit, especially if you have the "ignore 25% armor" perk.
But I have a feeling that the Warhammer was put up on the poll by mistake, since it would be unwise for your sneaky bowman to train with two-handed weapons. I have no special tips for this, besides trying out a sword/axe combo.

Before I had voted, I thought to myself: "Everyone is going to have said sword!". This made me feel less inclined to tell the truth and say sword myself, but my honesty got the better of me. The truth is, with a sword in hand, I feel so much more comfortable. I know that I will be able to act in a more timely manner when someone decides to start shanking the most powerful Spellsword alive (at least in MY Skyrim).

I like to switch it up. Right now I'm using a Dwarven mace, but for the majority of my time spent with this character I was using a sword. Well, using a sword for the final blows; the rest is done with magic ! Its my first time playing a TES game and making a character centered around magical attacks.

Dawnbreaker, an Exquisite ebony sword with soul trap, and The Black Star

For those occasions when the Nightingale Bow lets me down and someone actually closes to melee range.

Since i put quite some love, dedication and points into one-handed, dual-wielding seemed to be a really good idea to me. So I upped my chance for critical hits and any bonus damage multipliers I could possibly lay my rogueing hands on. In the end, I was mostly doing dual daggers (more speed = more chances for crit hits in less time), but I also very much enjoyed dagger/sword or sword/dagger combos... all dual enchanted for life/mana/stamina suckage and/or paralysis, so I could basically plough through a scene filled with unfriendly folks, turn around and focus on whatever was still standing, getting up again or not running home to momma. Lovely trip that was. Next will be all-magic or shield/mace. Mace is said to go pretty well with its own one-handed tech and shield for damage reduction. Looks promising, but I think I might not like the slow-down compared to dual-wielding daggers and swords. Plus, I really love the conjurable soul-sucking sword. Lovely perk to have, and it doesn't weigh a thing. If I'm not mistaken that one also comes in conjurable mace flavour. You might want to look into that.
