FPS's are all the same. You shoot the guns and the peoples fall down. You kill more and more people until your objectives (shooting people) are checked off then you start the game again to get your combo's up.
So I'm gonna have to go with RPG's, all of which have deeply varied combat systems, stories, difficulty curves, and far less racism.

I prefer FPS, but I like the occasional RPG. Fallout 3 was a mix of both and that was a brilliant game.
I'd rather have an RPG with FPS elements (ie Fallout 3) than an FPS with RPG elements (ie Borderlands)

Fallout 3 has the worst setting, story and gameplay conceivable. It's neither an FPS nor an RPG, but something more of a Piece Of Shit, and an intolerable insult to its forbears.
OnT: I find the FPS genre to be much more diverse than its RPG counterpart; a comparison ends up much like one between e.g. fictional movies and nature documentaries. I'd say that it depends on what mood I'm in, but then it struck me that I could just as well play Half-Life at a time when I feel like going for a Bioware rpg. Whenever I need to vent however, it's straight to some fy_ maps on CS:S until I've reached 100 frags or so.

Just got that game. It's so fun watching a super-mutant die in V.A.T.S. , but it's even better when it's done manually, and guess who learned how to adjust their sniper so that they can get accurate shots?Thy-Art-Is-Awesome said:

I prefer RPGs most of the time (Western, though, not JRPGs) because you tend to get better stories, better writing, and more memorable characters. This isn't true all of the time, of course, but enough of the time that I'd rather buy an RPG than a FPS. I'm one of those story-over-gameplay nuts, though, as well as a games-are-art fanatic, so take all of this with that in mind.
Plus, I hate first person perspective in games. I like to know where I am in relation to my environment, thank you very much.

Wow, I'm a bit surprised at the poll resulting right now (FPS at 31% while RPG 69%). I picked FPS because sometimes I don't feel like grinding, and instead feel like getting in and shooting things in flamboyant ways. Also the multiplayer aspects are much too fun to ignore (I play with my brother and friends often, and have been fortunate to make some great gaming companions online).
But if I were to be stripped of my internet connection or XBL service, RPGs would be my go-to winner when I look back on the countless hours I've spent playing Mass Effect, Knights of the Old Republic (both), and even ./hack games and the Final Fantasy genre.
The fact there's a story and characterization in an RPG, and that it's usually focused on, wins me over the FPS.
PS. I wish FEAR 2 characterized the squad more....
