Poll: Furries? Hate them? Love them?

I hate that most people think "sex fetish" when they hear "furry". I'm not one but I have friends and they like RPing as dogs and whatnot. It's fun! Like behaving like a child, scampering about. No different from behaving like a Star Fleet Captain piloting the Star Ship Enterprise or a Time Lord piloting a TARDIS in the many groups we have here on the Escapist.
Everything has it's varying degrees: I'm sure there are people who do sex RPing for Star Trek and for Doctor Who aswell. Please stop painting everyone with the same brush. It's the same everywhere, there are extreme christians, casual christians, extreme atheists, casual atheists, extreme furries, casual furries... the list goes on.

It's not fair for people to generalise furries.
The fact that the term "Furry" covers all these degrees means I'm not even going to cast in the poll, but... I will say that I love that aspect of the furry friends I know :)

It only reads like that if you like animé but hate furries, which is kind of funny because to a lot of people I'd wager that furries are a subset of the animé type (Come to think of it, I've never heard of a furry that didn't like animé. Hmm...)

I HAVE A QUESTION. Why does that fox have hair? It already has fur. Why does it need hair? This...this boggles my mind. Like, I'm seriously asking this one, not just trying to be a dick or anything.
It's not a dick thing to ask :3

There are various forms of 'anthro' (a play on the word 'anthropomorphic').
Some are more human than others or more 'feral' (as in, they have less or no anthropomorphic features and are just talking cats, dogs, whatever) my fursona (again, another play on words (lame, I know) persona this time) has my IRL hair, the one that Mookie_Magnus used before doesn't have hair for whatever reason...it's just personal taste.

Fair enough it does look weird but it's the way that I like it :/
Like...does the hair grow along side the fur? Does it grow on the head instead of fur? Or does the fox just have a wig?
It's a drawing, It doesn't need to make sense Just look at Looke at that guy that drew that room made of stairs :p
In this context it does. I expect animal people to make at least a modicum of sense. The stairs were supposed to be strange and surreal, a "fursona" is not even if most of them are drawn that way (and every fursuit is that way [small]those haunting lifeless eyes[/small])
Fair enough, as has been said though It's just a mix of what humans look like and animals look like not an honast attempt at seeing what it would look like if you somehow crossbred them,
but for arguements sake just imagine it as a different type of fur that grows longer like a lions mane or a dogs winter coat.

Agree about the soulless Eyes though.
That's the thing though, the people who want the furry community to be taken as something beyond just the mindless fetishistic group it presents it's self as try to paint a "fursona" as something deeply personal and awesome but they almost never can answer any questions like that. It's almost always just DURP IMMA PURPLE WOLF WITH DRAGON WINGS AN AN AN SHE IS MAGIC. Then it's off to the furry porn factory.
I prefer not to think in terms of "Why?" but in terms of "Why not?" eg
question
"Why does smashing that guy's face in with a bass guitar cause him to grow robots out of his head?"
Awnser
"Why not?"

But for your purple wolf scenario you must remember a few basic facts
1.Wolves are popular.
2.Most people beileve themselves to be or at least want to be uniqe and special snowflakes.
3.A lot of people don't think things through until asked and won't have an awnser ready for you.
4.Fictional things don't have to make sense to real world standards so long as they make sense within their own universe.

Like...does the hair grow along side the fur? Does it grow on the head instead of fur? Or does the fox just have a wig?
I would guess...there's a layer of fur underneath and then the hair just grows longer though the fur and out like you see it ;3
So it is fur? That makes some sense. At least you aren't one of those I'M A VEGAN TIGER people. You're alright in my books, and those are the best books there are.
Yeah, in the same way that hair IRL is fur in a way (but I'm not sure about that X3)
...what's a "Vegan Tiger"?
They are, fur is made of hair actually. Fur is generally the entire coat which is made out of more then one type of hair and whatnot. I'm probably not the best person to be talking about this.
But a "Vegan Tiger" is just something hilarious from one of my many incidents with the furry...community? I was on a forum at the request of a friend of mine and ended up getting banned while explaining to someone just why a tiger can't be a vegan. So basically I like to use it as an example of people who just don't know what the fuck, because I hate that.
Well, just leave it as fur kinda = head hair :p
And if they wanted to be a vegan tiger it was probably because they felt an affinity towards tigers and were vegan IRL...

LoL i dunno ¯\(°_o)/¯
But it makes no sense because a tiger would die if they were a vegan. You can't just completely ignore animal biology in a "fursona" otherwise you're just making a person and painting it like an animal in an attempt for attention basically. Honestly I've basically just started to separate things between "furry" and "Anthro" because it seems most furries, be they artists or otherwise have almost no concept of biology or anatomy while someone who wants to actually anthropomorphise something will usually keep these things in mind to some degree beyond "I WANT IT TO HAVE DOG EARS AND A TAIL".
It doesn't have to make sense. It's just a bit of fun with people enjoying themselves.

Aww, come on. It really is a bit of fun.
There are some furries waiting with bated breath for SCIENCE! to come up with a 'treatment' to make them anthros.
Look, it just ain't gonna happen. I know that, YOU know that.

The biology is generally ignored unless it's story/art/whatever specific.
Can you not enjoy Star Wars or Star Trek without understanding the biology of the aliens? Probably not!
It's just the same for us. We just throw the ears, tail, fur, muzzle etc onto a humanish frame and go: 'Look! I'm an anthropomorphic fox now! ^^'

That's the point. You don't see anything wrong with giving animals tits and sexualising them.

- - - -

On topic: I don't have a problem with them, but crying about fursecution and crap is annoying as hell. It's probably one or two rungs lower than admitting to watching animé imo.
What's wrong with watching cartoons?
I just mean in a conversation with a random stranger, saying you watch animé will probably lower their opinion of you. Saying you're a furry (Assuming they know what it is) will be more likely to lower their opinion of you.

Both fairly harmless, just not accepted as 'normal'. Furries are just moreso.
The way you phrased it was as though you were insulting those that enjoy anime.
He has a point mind you :p and at least 40% of this thread is insulting to people who are part of the furry community

GAH! The ignorance... so... blinding! The blatant bigotry and arrogance of putting all furries into bestiality and yiffing groups has left my eyes scorched! Some of you have lost 1000 reputation with Slick Samurai!

Escapist Forum Goers, I am disapoint.
Actually, the thread is a good read. Aside from the OP, most of the posters are either tolerant of furries, or furries themselves. I'm glad we can respond to such a blatant cry for hatred in a forum with peace and civility.

And since we're on the topic, I might as well put in a plug to the Escapist's own safe, furry Group: http://www.escapistmagazine.com/groups/view/Furrehs
And while you plug the furry group, I'll plug the CatGirl one. http://www.escapistmagazine.com/groups/chat/Catgirl-Lovers

OT: Genuinely don't care all that much. Sure, 'otherkin' weird me out a bit, but I have nothing really against them, as long as they don't try to get me involved.

The furries that are into anthro-art are fine though. Sure, some of the art can be quite good (not the sexualised stuff though. That isn't my cup of tea). Heck, I quite like cute pics of Catgirls (hence the group link) (and again, not really into the sexualised ones all that much).

So yeah, most furries are grand, 'otherkin' can be a bit odd, and Catgirls are cute.

But the problem becomes people like the aformentioned vegan tiger. They were using a real animal and rather then even explain it away (gasp that would take thought) by saying something like "a more human digestive system would allow this character to process his diet" he just cried until anyone saying he was being impossible got banned banned. You also get people who shove wings onto creatures that don't fly, wings aren't just magical flying devices. Don't even get me started on people who draw reptiles or birds with nipples.
I mean if you're taking part in something that has some sort of close relationship with animals, at least fucking know something about them, don't just asspull everything if you're going to use real animals.
I know that foxes live in family units. They can't growl. They can't bare teeth like wolves and dogs. Their pups are actually called kits. And all of that is from Wikipedia.
Ok, you have a point that they should probably know something about the animal they have chosen as their own but...in all honesty, who cares?

Do you want me to explain how
is supposed to walk? Or talk? Or even have thumbs?
I can't.
I can make stuff up, but I couldn't give you a whole diagram of how it all works.

Look, if you don't like the art or the community or whatever, stop trolling them, please. For your sake and theirs.

I like it. You don't. I have the right to my opinions. You have the right to yours.
I'm tired of this discussion since we are now just going around in circles as you just seem preoccupied by how these drawn characters work in the real world. Short answer: They don't.
Long answer: They work in their own little, crazy, demented, special, awesome, furry world.

I bid you good day.

Erm...
(grabs megaphone)FURRIES ARE NOT IN FACT REAL CREATURES
(puts down megaphone)
How things work in the real world does not apply to ficticious beings as you yourself just admitted with your star wars alien jab,
If furries were just called aliens instead would you suddenly have no problem with it?
If so you are sereously shallow
also "it's magic" does work in again a fitional setting with fictional creatures or do you hold wizards, minataurs, centaurs, chimera and pegusus with equal disdain?

As I said Furries are nor real creatures nor are they ever likely to be.

By the way if you can come up with a valid reason for a vegan tiger why do you care that someone else can't?

No one is going to take their shit seriously if they can't even make it plausible with some leeway.
What part of "it's just a bit of fun" don't you understand?! Hmm?
Do you think I understand how a TARDIS works? No but I still get to have fun in the Doctor Who group with causal role play as a Time Lord and making fun comments. Just drop it.
A tardis isn't a real thing, animals are, people are and biology and anatomy are. These things are pretty clearly defined and it's not that hard to learn up at least the basics on this stuff either. And again,if it's just for fun then why do they pitch fits any time anyone dares so much as disapprove of them posting porn on a family-friendly website?
You casting all furries in with these "posters" you're vaguely talking about on an un-named website. Good evidence!
Like I've already said Everything has it's varying degrees, there are christians who post insulting pictures about atheists and atheists who post insulting pictures about christians, muslims -> christians, christians -> muslims. I've never encountered furry porn at all on places like this website or any other website where I wouldn't expect it. Where have you been surfing!...

I'm pretty much indifferent to them, one of my friends is a furry and it never seemed to bother me.
