You're thinking of otherkin, not furries. Most furries think otherkin are idiots and make fun of them.
Edit: Since so many of you have a problem with my opinion when I was simply giving you my opinion in exchange for yours I ask that you stop commenting on why I'm wrong and focus more on stating your OWN opinion. Thank You.
I'm very sorry to break this to you, OP, but crying "opinion" when people prove you wrong doesn't fool anybody
Nobody proved me wrong for one thing. I just wanted the actual topic to be discussed instead of my opinion. I placed my opinion in the opening post in exchange for the rest of yours not to be dissected by people who think I'm a soul-less demon because I openly hate a belief.
It's not like I was saying "YOU ALL SHOULD SHARE THE SAME OPINION AND HATE FURRIES. DO IT DO IT DO IT"

Fun fact: My boyfriend and I are furries. Neither of us think we're actually animals in any sense of the word.

Hey, kid, maybe you should stop putting words in my mouth for juuuuuuuuuuust a moment and read what I said.

Otherkin. Are. Morons. They are a fairly small subset of the furry fandom and the rest of the fandom hates them too. Most furries, however, are intelligent and/or sane enough to realise that they and their characters are not one and the same, and that they are human, regardless of what species their character is.

I don't give a fuck if you hate the jackholes who go around saying "FUCK YOU I'M A DRAGON" without the slightest bit of irony, because they're insufferable and damnably idiotic, and therefore deserve all the scorn they get. I hate them too--so don't go around accusing me of that kind of retarded bullshit just because I happen to enjoy a bit of anthro art, dig?

It's kind of like saying all Catholics are pedophiles, except more provably untrue. :V

Ehhhh, I'm actually a girl thank you very much.
I wasn't referring to your post about Otherkin versus furries I was referring to your post about me crying opinion when proved wrong. There honestly isn't much I can say to your argument talking about otherkin and not actual furries because in most instances it seems the line between them is very thin with some furries whereas with others I suppose there is a huge difference.

Time out: Do you know what "subset" means?
All otherkin are (arguably) furries, but not all furries are otherkin.

because in most instances it seems the line between them is very thin with some furries whereas with others I suppose there is a huge difference.
Whatever the hell that means. Can you say that again, and make a little sense this time?

Check my profile, what boy would have the name Sarah? Christ. Not that it really matters if you believe me.
Anyways to be quite honest with you. I could care less. I created this thread because I was bored and didn't feel like going to bed last night. So getting into hardcore debates about OH WAIT THAT'S NOT ALL FURRIES, SOME ARE CALLED THIS AND NOT LIKE THAT. Is pointless to me. To put it this way Seeing animals portrayed as having similar qualities to Humans (Anthro) annoys me. People believing they are animals annoys me. Regardless of what you want to call it. Anything even semi related to furries annoys me. Call me an ignorant retard like people have previously, I really don't care.
Enjoy your day.

Wow, high five for surprisingly popular thread<3

OT: I don't mind 'em much, unless they're extremely open about it in which case I politely give them a nice cup of

"Shut your mouth, I don't care."

to boil down my argument, you are a bad person because you hate a group of people. I did this once and I learnt. I actually made a similar thread somewhere, though I can't find it. anyway, an opinion is an excuse. an excuse to think something bad.
I suppose but in the end the thread wasn't meant to focus on my opinion it was meant for me to get different perspectives and maybe learn more about furry culture through seeing other peoples point of views.
Thats a good view to have; so as a furry since 1998 and a leader of a entire group of furry's do you have any questions you'd like to ask or your curious about? I only aim to inform.
Missed this post earlier. oops. All in all the question that I linger on the most is by what logic do you base your belief in having an animal soul on (if you are that type of furry)Is it simply something that seems to fit you or or is it something that you would like to be true, or maybe something else entirely?

Hmmmm Well First...

I personaly have a very large Native American background; I was always told that our actions, choices and even way of thought can be simular to a animal. Though they are my own personal beliefs I try not to push them on anyone, I only aim to inform. I guess I kinda fell into the fandom beacause of it.

As for the fandom - Although I can't speak for every furry out there; I can speak from experence. Many Furries I know simply want to imulate a animal based on legends, myths, stories and such (like a wolf's strengh, a foxes cunning, etc, etc). The fandom is very diverse and my reponse may or maynot apply ot everyone. But all I can say is saying the the whole thought process of being the animal is mostly viewed as fun or even sillyness, only a very few take it seriously.

I hope I answered your question - Anything else?

Don't call me that :V

Hang on a sec. I'm gonna line up some shots and down one every time you post something to the effect of "I don't care." Starting with this one. *gulp*

9 pages late into this, but I feel like dropping my opinion in all the same.

First off, I am not a furry or consider myself one despite what my name would suggest. While I enjoy a cute little Disney cartoon, or "furry" video games, I don't really associate myself with them. I just enjoy it as much as any other style. I watch some Disney movies with talking animals and am a huge sucker for animation, those are "furry" movies I guess. I play Ratchet and Clank games and Sly Cooper games, those are "furry" games I guess. Some comics I read happen to star anthropomorphic animals, those are "furry" comics. While on pure technicality I may be "furry", I just don't personally associate with it.

That being said, as much a problem with it as I do with any other fandom or sexual preference; I don't really care, and so long as you respectfully keep it to yourself it's all good. And yes, I realize that not all furries are "yiffers", I'm merely setting a point.

Secondly, the whole furry fandom/fetish is plagued with misunderstandings and ignorance from people outside it. While, again, I don't really consider myself a "furry", I've experienced enough of it and read up on the topic (what? The internet/wikipedia was made for this people!) to know that "fursuiters" and the like are rare and hardly make up the majority. There are some quality artists who don't do porn and other quality artists that do. It's got it's own friendly community just like any other group in the world, and it's harmless. Hell, even the community itself finds some of the "darker" aspects of it creepy. [http://tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pmwiki.php/Main/EvenNerdsHaveStandards]

Thirdly, in lieu of the second point, I don't really understand the pure hatred that I see from some people towards them. Again, this goes towards ignorance of the subject matter, but even then some of the sheer hate is pretty disturbing to be quite honest. I get that most of the hate is from the standard troll hate, but even regular people just hate it with a passion for no real reason and they are completely ignorant of the culture/fandom. I know that most people aren't going to bother with learning on what they find disturbing, but there shouldn't be any reason for the sheer hatred against them. It's just people afraid of what they don't understand, and while understandable to an extent, it's still a bit disturbing to see the hate.

Overall, I've got no problems with furries, they've done nothing to me and as far as I know they're just regular people who happen to enjoy an art style or whatever.

Lets be honest here.
How many people think anthropomorphic animal characters are inevitably related to furry "culture"?
Personally I like anthro characters, stuff like Starfox. I also draw them sometimes. This does not make me a furry as far as I'm concerned. Furry as a label needs to be reserved for the more extreme stuff.

People who have a fetish for anthro animals = Furry.
People who think they're a badger in the body of a 13 yr old boy = Furry.
People who can't have enjoyable sex without a massive goofy looking fur suit = Furry.

The first time I heard the term was whenh it was used to describe the fursuit sexual fetish. I imagine that's where many people would have first heard it too.
Actually no, the term was created around the enjoyment of the art style. So by your own faulty logic, you are a furry.
I think you mean "despite" my faulty logic. If you want to try insulting me you may want to double check what you're saying makes sense.

Not to mention I don't recall speculating about the actual origin of the term. I asked what most people consider to be a furry, and stated what I think the term should encompass.

As for the reason I don't consider myself a furry. I fail to see how appreciation of something is cause to give myself a label or join a group/fandom. I especially find it odd since furry, or anthro art is not a style of art, its a subject.
Sure I like reading Redwall and playing Starfox, but no more than any other game. If someone likes still life paintings, do they really need to differentiate themselves from portrait or landscape fandom?

All this talk has me wondering if there's a fandom out there for anthropomorphised kitchen appliances in art.
Hey man, you don't need to flip your shit, I wasn't trying to be mean or have some sort of negative tone, if I did, I'm sorry. I was just pointing out that the only requirement to be a furry was enjoying the art style, and you do.

I will be honest I find it a bit uncomfortable. Only if you throw it in my face though

On the internet, there's so much weird shit, lemonparty.org, tube girl, 2 girls on cup yet for some strange reason we a lot of people openly hate furries

I think it exists from a self esteem issue, I have no reason to believe this and no evidence bar my theory of that animals love people unconditionally, therefore you want to show your love back but you are still sexually attracted to people. Something like that

The internet was designed for outcasts, rejects and freaks yet for some strange reason we hate a person with a fetish. Bullshit, might as well be secondary school all over again
