Poll: G4TV/X-play is now a joke to me

Well, maybe they felt that while Fallout 3 and MGS4 were good games in their respective genres, Fable 2 had more general appeal overall and thus deserved their highest award. Not that I am a Fable 2 fan in any way, but I can see their reasoning. Gamespot gave their GOTY award to Serious Sam one time. They said it was the one game every editor could agree didn't suck. Every other game had at least one person who was against it. There really is no accounting for taste.

Adam Sessler is of the opinion that all games suck unless they're mediocre Halo knockoffs and Morgan Webb is only there because her rack is far more impressive then her knowledge of gaming. That being said, her face looks like someone took an electric cake beater to it for several hours.

Methinks this is going a bit too far... and to everyone who though MGS4 deserved GoTY: I don't want to sit through cutscenes that are ~90 minutes long. Hell, I rarely have that much time to play games in one sitting. It's an odd choice, but it is justifiable. Personally, I think Fallout 3 deserved it.

Honestly, I don't really care what they choose as GotY. I could find a game to be the greatest, most life-affirming experience I'd ever enncountered. And if X-Play declared it game of the millenium, it would still not change my opinion of them. Sessler and Webb are a couple of fashionable autonomons propped up to spew an amount praise or bile that is pre-programmed by the shows producers.

And also intern jokes.

Just for clarification: do you hate Adam and Morgan or the people behind the scenes who tell them what to say? Both is an option.

I mean, come the fuck on! It's only one award ceremony out of so many others. I'll admit that I didn't expect Fable II to win GOTY from them, but I moved on from that about 5 seconds after they announced the winner!

It's their opinion on who they think should have won, but that doesn't mean that any of the other games are automatically bad. Just look at Sessler's Soapbox, forgot which episode, but one of the more recent ones.

And obviously, this will turn into a "I miss the good ole' TechTV days!" and "I stopped watching G4TV a long time ago, back when it used to be awesome" thread.

My god, people relax what they picked. There truly is no Game of the Year. Everyone has their own opinion, and not one game is universally agreed on. They didn't do it like last year asking people in polls, this time they used all their reviewers to vote on GotY title, and they decided on Fable 2. Personally, Gears of War 2 earned mine, but that's because I like Gears of War 2, and I haven't played every game this year, so I can't really say that it is the best of the best, just from my amount of games I've played this year.

I agree with Jumplion, it's going to turn into another "G4 sucks now!" kind of threads. Sigh, too many of these lately.

I completely agree, Fable 2 is the same as Fable 1, in fact, its worse than Fable 1, and Fallout 3 deserved the award for sure.

It arisen recently that game developers and publishers do slip in extras for reviewers if their game gets a positive review. I wouldn't be surprised is GOTY awards get bought out too.

I don't get it either. Fable 2 was a poorly made game. Yes, it had some good ideas, but it just ended up being a buggy, shallow and inconsistant game. Its nothing compared to Left 4 Dead

Because having strictly linear game-play, zombies, and having a valve ass-stamp makes it the best game known to man.

It really depends on the criteria in which they rate. If they criteria was "relatively novel design that has unusually good graphics but drags a bit because (like any other Molyneux title) its ambition exceeds their ability to produce a common sense solution" then, yes, Fable 2 is a game of the year.

I can kinda understand not giving GTA4 GOTY - it's a grittier, more realistic GTA3, which means it's not that novel anymore, and it also shattered a lot of fan's expectations by not being the wild ride the previous games were

I can kinda understand not giving Fallout 3 GOTY because it goes from "awesome" to "insulting" in the last 2 hours of the game.

And so on. Just sum it up to the reviewers' opinion. I actually kinda respect they're not just jumping on the bandwagon and voting for what everybody else would vote for.

LBP is the only decent game on that list. MGS4 is a cult hit, not a great stand alone game. Fallout 3 is basically the same, but yes, it IS fun. Gears 2? Are you kidding me? Resistance 2 isn't played by enough people, and GTA4 may have been well made, but just plain old was not fun. Fable 2 was very enjoyable, doesn't matter if it was the sleekest or most detailed game, it was fun.

Well, at first, I'd like to point out that should Fable 2 had won Best RPG and Game of the Year, you would complain about that, so I'm going to chalk this one up to no-winning on the side of X-Play.

But frankly, this is "X-Play is wrong, my opinion is right, you guys all blow." So... Either we agree with you, or we're wrong. Frankly, I don't see much discussion from this thread, or anything remotely related to a decent exchange of information, or even discourse.

So, you want my opinion? Fable 2 didn't deserve Game of the Year. From the titles I've played, I would reserve that distinction for none other than Mirror's Edge, with honorable mention to both Fallout 3 and Saints Row 2.
