I read some of them, mainly the WoW wiki. In the wake of Blizzard's increasing reliance on novels and comics for major events and character development, the wiki is very useful for keeping up with the lore without having to read the often crappy books. I've also read a bit the wikis for Mass Effect, Dragon Age, Starcraft 2 and a few others for some specific pieces of information that I wanted to know without digging into forums.

I never contributed though. I came close to contributing to WoWwiki, but... there's a moderator over there who has a fit whenever someone writes "Night Elf" instead of "Night elf". He also considers himself an "experienced WarCraft psychologist", which I find kind of scary. So I decided not to get involved.

I have contributed a couple things to Metal Gear Wiki. I also read the Resident Evil, Silent Hill, Fallout, Oblivion, and Red Dead Wikis

I love them for these reasons:

1) Through "Wiki Magic," [http://tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pmwiki.php/Main/WikiMagic] errors are fixed and new information (e.g. from patches/updates) is integrated seamlessly, keeping them up to date in real time.
2) It's child's play to include gameplay videos and screenshots to show exactly HOW to do things, whereas text guides (e.g. Gamefaqs) can only try to describe the objective (often, poorly.)
3) Because multiple people can work on them, you never have to worry about the author "burning out" or moving on with life and stopping updates, even months/years later.
4) Unlike "official" strategy guides, they're free!
5) Generally, the people who take the time to edit a wiki really care about the game universe, so you will find all kinds of lore/backstory/character information you won't find in a "strategy guide." You can even find information on how to avoid/exploit bugs/glitches.

These were massive weaknesses of the model other strategy sites had. Wikia is now one of, if not THE largest gaming site around.

Yes, I read and re-read the hell out of character databases on the Call Of Duty and Hitman wikis.
Pretty fascinating stuff, mind you.

I've taken a look at the Mass Effect wiki a few times, just to clear up some inconsistencies. Other than that, I steer clear.
They do have an air of sad fanaticism.

I go to the Fallout 3 Wiki (to find, exploit, and fix glitches), Warhammer 40k wiki (nerdcore), and Halo wiki (fanboyism)...

I will go to them maybe a few times a week at most, or if I need help or am board...

I don't want to live in a world without Guild Wars Wiki. Then I read Oblivion and Fallout 3 Wiki.

they're not so good when it comes to actual tips regarding gameplay
Some wikis have gameplay related info that is actually useful - but that generally pertains to MMOs and RPGs where the gameplay is rather expansive. More FPS-type games tend to have backstory, bestiary, cheats and other such info.
Depends which wikis you haunt :D
Yeah as soon as I posted that I thought that but I was too lazy to change it, yes especially with MMOs a lot of them tend to have tips.
