In recent years there have been a few films that have been or are being remade and I wonder somewhere down the line will this happen to the gaming industry will they just run out of ideas and start necro-ing? how soon?

In a way it's already started with the Pokémon games being relaunched with little enhancements which I don't think is a bad thing as I tried the play the originals recently on my gameboy that I still have and I couldn't really make anything out on the screen it was just blocks. I was amazed I ever managed to play it.

What do you think, Will/Should games start being remade? If so what one's would you like?
If not, why?

Personally I'm not bothered. I wouldn't mind a updated Abe's Odyssey or Crash Bandicoot 3 though.

Nah. I don't see the point in remaking a game unless its like a revamp with a completely different story.

I've only played one remake I've ever liked which was Maximo. That was a remake of Super Ghouls and Ghosts and it was practically a game on its own yet it still had key elements of SG&G.

That's the only way companies should remake games if they ever were to remake them

There have been tones of video game remakes these days. Also you can get Crash Bandicoot 3 through psn. It's very nostalgic!

I'd like to see older games remade, but the ones I'd like probably won't, and if they are, it will be poorly.

... Square has been going crazy re-remaking all the old Final Fantasies. 1 and 2 have updated graphics, added dungeons, etc. You can get the REAL FF3 (which wasn't released out of Japan previously) on the DS. Its been completely remade as well, not just touched up. I suppose the story is the same, everything else seems to be tweaked.

If you think about it... there are lots of game out there that use the same characters, and similar plots/ideas to their predecessors -> Prince of Persia was around for a long time, but no one really remembers anything before the Sands of Time. (For example) Wouldn't that kind of count as a remake?

Personally, I'd love for them to remake FFVII so I can actually play it. I just can't pop the PS1 disc and enjoy it on a big LCD tv. Same with FFVIII. My friends are big on these games, but I just can't get into them because I'm too distracted by the graphics.

While I won't get anything out of remakes, I think there should be some. There's a lot of awesome games that the new generation won't experience because they're too old. Then again, it's their own bloody fault for not looking up the oldies.

Whilst I think some scenes from old games would look super in HD (FFVII's cross dressing scene, or Sabin suplexing the phantom train in FFVI come to mind) very rarely when something is remade does it keep the original feel of the piece. What makes a game charming or fun is usually indicative of its native environment and so a remake would be pretty but soulless.

FFVII seem's to be a popular one, I wouldn't mind a remake of that myself, I still have all my FF playstation games too I may even dig it out.

Making easy money by remaking an old good game is a greedy developers dream. Assholes get to live their dreams

It depends on the game and what context. For example, it's perfectly fine in my book to remake a game if you're making a next-gen sequel and package it in. In fact, I actually support anyone trying to do that because that way new people need not get scared away by the past stuff they've missed and it would make gamers who've played the original able to relive it along with a brand spanking new sequel new.

Other than that, it simply depends on the context.

i think they could remake some great games, but some people are so up on their high horse about the "good ole days" they wont want them to get changed, so who knows...

personally, i dont mind them just remaking them in 3D with super graphic upgrades, maybe balance out some gameplay issues to (by now they HAVE to be obviously found)

but if they do a remake, and completely revamp it, thats all good too

there is also the problem...of finding these oldies? they either aren't being sold, are broken, so rare to the point you buy it on ebay for 1000 dollars...

so unless psn/wii store/steam/live releases them, some of those oldies are just too hard to come by

personally i am screaming for some system to come out with captain america and the avengers, that was my favorite sega game ever, played it till my freaking sega broke from being on fire

I don't mind remakes. There's a lot of old games I'd love to play with updated graphics and mechanics. Especially since many of them are quite hard to find. Although, arguably, while they're remaking a game they could be making a totally new IP. I'd place them in the same category as sequels.

I like remakes of certain games. There are games I pull out of my closet and play again every now and then and it would be nice if they had updated graphics.

Old Sierra games, the old LucasArts games, Fallout 1 & 2, these are just a few examples of games I would buy the revamped version of

Just like Hollywood right now is doing games-to-movies and comics-to-movies, the gaming industry will start to lose a little bit of creativity, or just become lazy and redo the good old stuff there was before!

That's an interesting one; Wouldn't they have to change it as well because couldn't you kill kids or something?

Are there any other games that couldn't be remade without a media shitstorm?

Yeah I'm all for it. I have been playing the HD'd version of Perfect Dark for the last couple of days, and while it's not perfect (haha!) I'm still very impressed with it. I love the game but I probably wouldn't have played it again on the 64 (resolution, controls etc) so I'm happy that I've got it on my 360.
