I might just get a gaming rig later on if I stop playing online multiplayer altogether, but don't count on it.
You obviously haven't seen the new Team Fortress 2 updates, have you? I've never had this much fun with multiplayer:

Eh, the best games are the single-player ones with amazing stories, and online communities often suck. I say, if you can find a particular game that you love playing competitively, keep playing it online (I play Gears of War 2 consistently). Otherwise, if it's just kind of something you go to now and again, don't bother.

I don't play shooters online anymore. I'm ok at them but everyone else is always better and really REALLY wants me to know it. Only games I really play online now are Jedi Accademy and L4D2. And Garrys Mod occasionally but only with a friend.

I've never been very competitive anyway though.

I lost Live in September. Only regret is the lack of Party Chat and DLC. And patches. GTA keeps freezing on me whenever I get the urge to play. And Oblivion is unplayable.

Otherwise, its nice to play games without fretting about making time to kill people online with friends.

Perhaps you should try some lesser known games, less people playing but more dedicated and friendly.
This is great advice.
The douchebags are all in Halo and Call of Duty.
You know what the nicest guys I ever met were playing? Ghost Recon: Advanced Warfighter 2 and Rainbow Six: Vegas 2.

You know how rare it is to find a really nice guy in a CoD4 match, or Halo match? That's how rare it is to find an ass-hat in those games.
Speaking of which: I'll totally play those games. (As the nice guy)
I'm sure there are plenty, but they all stay in Private CHat or XBL Partys.

I'd like to think that I never gave multiplayer a chance, but thinking back, I just had many piss-poor multiplayer experiences from the late 90s & early 2000s I'd like to forget. Tried it again on a few MMOs a few years back; the crowd hasn't evolved at all.

Well, if you're looking for a mature online gaming comunity, try the computer. No 10 year old has the time, money, or attention span to get a good gaming rig. That might help your online plight, albeit an expensive solution. Unless you have a good computer already.

I feel like anything I could say, I've already said, and if not me, someone else has.

So, that should sum up my feelings. Good on you, for ditching that collective of scum and villainy known as the Xbox live community.

Being away at university, online is the only way I can hang out with my friends, and it's a ton of fun. The secret is staying in Party Chat, that way you avoid the general mass of idiots who are there.

Oh or you just take everything they say in good spirits. I do that, and I write down all the stupid funny stuff they say.

I play online all the time, but i no longer use my mic anywhere near as much as i used to. it lies unused to my side and i only put it in if a join a friend for a game.

Too many racist immature twats who think saying fuck over and over makes them big and hard.

gee i gave up on multiplayer just because i can't always afford the net but don't ruin it for all, yes there are dickheads out there but ur not forced to play with them , if ya make a custom match and invite ur friends only problem solved... but not all are dickheads mind you , just one or two and not all kids are bad either

I generally avoid online. If I'm gonna play with more people, it'll be like my cousin or my girlfriend (at least that way I always get to win, joke, she kicks my ass all the time). But with the likes of Uncharted 2, I'd rather play the Solo rather than waste my time fussing over my level online.

I lost interest in multiplayer, purely because nearly everyone on the internet are extremely annoying. Also it's very tricky to win, it's not worth 10 games of frustration to get the momentary glory of a win.
This is probably the weakest anti-multiplayer argument that I hear frequently.

If you're not good, keep playing and get better! I'm subpar at TF2 but I still play it all the time and love it.

I only play MW2 because my friends do, and I like to speak to them. The game itself though is boring, same fucking thing every time. I'd speak to them in XBL parties if I could, but they fucked up that and instead I'm forced to speak to them over some cocksucker who starts insulting me because I was actually speaking normally, or because I'm British, which is bad, apparently.

I wouldn't give up playing online, try playing a different game. Left 4 Dead has a good online, and you can meet some okay people.

I played multiplayer for a long time, I was above average but the only people I got stuck against were the people who play 24/7 and go to gaming tornaments. Also I very rarely got a good team. I might give some other games a go I never really gave a go before, but otherwise I am quite satisfied with single player.
