If I am filling the glass, it's half full.

If I am emptying the glass, it's half empty.

Otherwise, it's just half a glass.

I'd certainly say that the glass is full. Not half full, not half empty, but full. I mean, even though a few weeks ago, I had a car crash that wasn't my fault and still looked on the bright side, despite being messed around by the various authorities and the woman that hit me. I get a really nice car for a few weeks and okay, while I'm paying slightly more for fuel, it does look really flash.

Work has become bad and as a result, I've been cut down to three days a week, starting tomorrow. Is this such a bad thing? Not really - I've now got 5 years of experience with admin and I can go out there and find more work in the office industry. I've got experience and skills to match and I should be able to get a wage more befitting of my skill level, so that would be nice.

On top of that, I'll have a few hours more to spend with my creative writing over Mondays and Tuesdays, so that will help me reach my goals for 2011.

It depends on whether it's been filled or emptied to half way. If it's been filled to half way, it's half full. If it's been emptied to half way, it's half empty.

So has the glass in question been filled or emptied last?
This. Everyone who has asked me that question, i've answered that to.

"Dear lord! This situation that has befallen me holds a container with below the maximized optimum level of liquid, but is still quite above the minimum level for refreshment."

I say half full, not because I'm an optimist, but because half full makes more sense. The glass is half full of X liquid. It wouldn't make any sense if you said the glass is half empty of X liquid. I do the same thing with temperature. Coldness isn't a quantifiable characteristic. An object isn't cold, it's lacking heat.

An optimist says the glass is half full. A pessimist says the glass is half empty. A realist says the glass is too small and finds a smaller one.

I see quite a few people have answered this way. I will repeat it because I feel it is that important:

"Whether the glass is half full or half empty depends on whether you are filling it or emptying it."

Neither. Engineers have a saying: If the glass isn't full, the glass is too big.

Or in other words, solve the problem rather than bitching about it.
