I've been playing the Half-life series for a while and I was wondering "Why doesn't Gordon talk?" Any way I want to know what the fans think( I'm presonally voting no)

Does anybody need to talk... Think about that...

Yes. We do. Of course.

But Gordon needs to talk just about as much as link does. And that's not much.

Well there's one problem, he's a mute, so he can't speak. And I judge from playing the series that there seems to be no void waiting to be filled with his speech.

Wow, 100% No posts. I agree, Freeman shouldn't talk. Partly because of the above reasons, (badass and such) but there's also the "putting you own words into his mouth" aspect of it. It makes the character seem to be more you-ish (i know that isn't a word)

Does Sonic need to speak? No but he continues to do so, annoying everyone in the vicinity.

At no point in the games is it stated that he is mute. He just doesn't feel like talking.

If Gordon talks in episode 3 it would mess the half life story for sure!

Absolutely not, all communication can be made by jumping and spinning around frantically.

For example, when Cubbage offers the RPG to you in HalfLife 2:
Cubbage:"So who here wants to use this weapon"
Gordon:...
Me"OMG me give it to me come on come on I WANT that RPG *jump jump jump jump*"
Cubbage:"Ah! Of course Gordon, why don't you take the RPG?"

See? it works.

Gordon Freeman having no voice in-game makes him just the way he is. He's no guy of talking, but doing something. Giving Freeman a voice is just like your best friend having changed his haircolor; you'll barely recognise him anymore.

Besides, I can't really think of a voice suited for him. Neither can you, right?

I personally prefer communicating by changing the level of the room on which I'm standing: jumping around on top of the light fittings in Black Mesa East is a clear indication of Gordon's relief at finally arriving at his destination.

But in all seriousness, I don;'t think that Gordon needs to speak, because he isn't really characterised enough to need a voice. In many ways he is a non-character, which is quite good actually as it means the attention in the 'cutscenes' is focused towards the support characters, all of whom are interesting and believable, and also it helps provide a slightly other-worldly element to Gordon.

That was the exact same example I was going to use.
"Does Link need to speak?"

Well a little unknown fact is that Gordon communicates through Morse code. If you watch his eyes closely, you can see that he blinks in a certain rhythm which matches a Morse code.

While he doesn't talk in the game, it's not hard to imagine that he is communicating to people (other than enemies via the communication of violence), by their reactions to Gordon.

In Black Mesa East, Alyx will look at Gordon and smirk when Gordon is being lectured to concerning the Resistance's guidelines, perhaps a quiet snarky comment Gordon gave over to Alyx. When Gordon meets Barney while in disguise, he tries to joke and comfort the possibly freaking out scientist (He had just been teleported into a fascist regime with nothing, alone and friendless, but, turns out he had several friends where he went to.)

I guess I'm saying that Gordon Freeman does indeed "talk" it's just that rather than a voice actor, the player is supposed to put in the dialogue.

I don't know...

In the worst character thread someone made good point about he is you and your experiences should be used to shape the character into your own thing (Or something to that affect)

Although I don't like Freeman, I don't think it is because he doesn't speak. I don't think I like him cause you don't see any emotions. But its harding seeing emotions in first person...

Id say he is fine the way he is. But maybe there could be an option for him to speak if the player wants it.
