Freemans mind says it all :)

i believe that he has reached a point were he needs not talk just giving us that look and we shall understand what he desires (either that r its a very lucky guess)

hail to the freeman :p

It sort of gives you that "Heroic" feeling, the main character's a Mute, but gives a presence of power to him.

Alternatively go on YouTube and search "Inside Freeman's Mind". I promise you'll laugh [somewhere along the way]

The man has a MIT degree talking is overrated to him! But really the whole silence thing is a tad odd its like he has no input on anything. But perhaps it was made that way because they fear that it would degrade the characters image. It now has a aura of mystery.

i like that he doesn't talk, your own thoughts can be a replacement to Gordons, it's much better than playing a game, being told 'you there, go do the hard stuff while we sit here and drink tea' and having a character go 'yes sir, gladly sir, not a problem sir, OORAH!' when you're thinking 'or maybe you could help this time? no? then go to hell'

the only problem with Gordon's silence is that valve seem to make Alyx Vance talk excessively to cover it up. i spent most of my time in the citadel just wanting to tell her to be quiet.

it's also part of the reason the 'Gordons mind' machinima works so well.

I think he shouldn't because like people have said it males him a bad ass but really does he need to? The cinematic presentation of the Half Life games wouldn't be the same if he did talk. Though the machinima series Freeman's Mind did it rather effectively for a different more amusing reason. Though i do hear that the new Black Mesa mod will in fact have Gordon Freeman talk so and making him a sort of bumbling scientist. Really don't see how that's going to work but hopefully it works well. Or at least gives the option of turning off the voice.

whether he talked or not people would still make him do their dirty work, at least the silent treatment gives him a certain dignity.

Although I would have really like to say "No, I WON'T go to Ravenholm!"

Well if it's that important you can just imagine the words in yourself but I just go with "everyone knows Gordon so well that he doesn't even need to speak for them to know what he thinks."

If anyone is waiting for Black Mesa (half-life 1 redone completely on the source engine), Freeman is slated to have thoughts to himself, that you, the player, get to hear.

No, no no! No game characters should have too much personality, they should be merely an avatar of the player who invests in them whatever personality they want. Trying to give a playable character too much of their own personality gives you annoying pricks like Nathan Drake or schizoids like Niko Bellic, who will be battling with his tortured past and mourning his need to kill one minute, before mowing down old ladies for the hell of it the next.

of course he doesn't, it adds to his character, and it means he doesn't say pre-recorded crap that you dont want him to say. plus, it means that some of the characters can be cheeky about his silence lol

Does anybody need to talk... Think about that...

Yes. We do. Of course.

But Gordon needs to talk just about as much as link does. And that's not much.
That was the exact same example I was going to use.
"Does Link need to speak?"
No. He's a badass - he doesn't need words.
When he did speak, it was in the horrible CD-i game. There we go.

No, Freeman does not need to speak. We know he can talk, the silent protagonist allows gamers to place themselves into the role of Freeman much easier. We are the voice of Freeman.
CD-I Game? I have no idea what you're talking about.
*tightens garrote*
Surely you just made that up? *pointed look*
.....uhhh....yes...I remember that did not exist.

I like to think of gordon being drug along these painful adventures with eyes wide as he silently screams his dismay.
