Will be voted GotY: BF3 or Skyrim, I think.

SHOULD be voted GotY: Orcs Must Die!

Hmm, it's tricky. Out of catagories I'd say:

Best strategy: Frozen Synapse
Most innovative gameplay: Frozen Synapse
Best indie game: Frozen Synapse
Best RPG: Skyrim
Best Cover Based Shooter: Deus Ex: Human Revolution (I know it's not a cover based shooter but it's the only game with cover based shooting that I could stand this year)
Prettiest Game: Skyrim
Darkest Game: The Binding of Isaac
Best Puzzle Game: Portal 2
Best Writing: Portal 2
Best English Accent: Portal 2

Game of the Year: For me, a toss-up between Skyrim and Frozen Synapse. Hang on, let me flip a coin...

Skyrim wins!

God, so many well-received games. I got no idea which one'll take home the prize in the little competition I hope to be running in about a month's time on another forum.

Sadly, I have yet to play even a single game from this year. Christmas, you'd better fucking deliver.

Don't forget that there is a possibility that Star Wars: The Old Republic will turn out to be a better WoW-style MMORPG than WoW, which might make it GOTY (Depends on how tired ppl are of WoW-style MMORPGS, even if this one turns out to be the best of them all).

Either way, my vote is for The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim. So far, it's gotten better reviews than all the other ones.
I also like the fact that, on average, Uncharted 3 scored higher than either MW3 and BF3, in light of all the hype that was going around about them (The same might also be said of Batman: Arkham City).

Deus Ex: HR and Portal 2 were really the only games I got to delve into and play more than an hour of this year...so I'm gonna go with...

The Metal Gear Solid HD Collection. Because fuck you.

Worthwhile? Saints row the third says hi. With a rocket launcher and a horse dildo.

Sure, I know you edited your post...but I don't think saints row the third knows. I don't think it cares. Matter of fact, I think it was actively looking for an excuse to blow something up.

At this point the only way The Old Republic could impress me more than Skyrim was if they'd send a free Twi'Lek Maid out with every copy...

...and a complete, bugfree version of Knights of the Old Republic 2.

The sad thing is that the Twi'Lek Maid is considerably more likely.

Well my personal GOTY are still The Witcher 2 and Deus Ex Human Revolution, and nothing is going to change that. I have no interest in Skyrim, and I have no doubt it will "win" many GOTY awards.

DE and W2 both were excellent sequels that built upon and/or improved from their predecessors. They were outstanding RPGs with solid, fluent mechanics, excellent writing, and shining examples of what a sequel should be.

The Witcher 2 wins hands down for me with Deus Ex in second place. I just couldn't get enough of these games and truly the best games to come out this year for me.

ummmm Mass Effect 3 still has not come out
Oh, I didn't know we were living in 2012. Didn't know games from a DIFFERENT YEAR could be worthy contenders for GOTY 2011

Who knows? There are so many great choices. The past two years, gamers are the winners.

With the release of MW3, Skyrim, Saints Row the Third, and the reviews coming for Skyward Sword, it looks like all the big titles this year have been played, so which game do you think most publications will name their Game of the Year? It looks like the big contenders are Portal 2, Batman: Arkham City, Uncharted 3, Skyrim, Skyward Sword, and I suppose either BF3 or MW3 (I seriously doubt it though)

So which of these titles do you think will be named GOTY? I know that Skyward Sword hasn't come out yet so it's not quite fair, but I doubt anyone's played all of these games anyway. Also, share your favorite game this year in your opinion.

EDIT: Whoops, I thought Saints Row the Third already came out. For the record though, reviews are already out for it, and it is reviewers that are going to name their GOTYs; our filthy consumer opinions don't matter quite as much. I also forgot about Deus Ex and Old Republic, my bad...

Also, feel free to share what you think will win in specific categories, like best art direction or best story.
Saint's Row the Third has not come out yet. I am currently pre-loading. Also, it is not a poll option.

Toss up between Witcher 2 and Skyrim for me, Skyrims big and very good (except for the fact the only dragon that's somewhat hard is anduin), but then i also love Witcher 2, ARG!

Although Saints Row isn't out yet (damn it why do they all come out when i have to study!), but yeh those 2 are my only current GOTY's at the moment after the big disappoint (to me, so shush) which was DA2, and rage while good i found rather short and somewhat linear when i was expecting more open world experience.

My vote would probably go to Deus Ex: Human Revolution. A game that set out to do a lot and got pretty much all of it right. All the elements needed to make a modern Deus Ex game where there: the deep, layered story, the varied augmentations and upgrade paths, the subtle and intelligent morals and themes and the varied non-linearf progression of levels. It had all of this, plus bringing a whole lot of new stuff to the table, such as the unique aesthetic, the bigger focus on side quests and the more advanced weapon modifiers. For a game that can set out to be so ambitious and still be extremely fun to play, my vote would have to go to Deus Ex: Human Revolution.

The runner-up would probably be Batman: Arkham City, for taking all that was good about Arkham Asylum (ie everything) and just making it bigger and better in any way. Also, there's a hell of a lot of replay value out of those crazy fun Riddler challenges. Third place, I would give to LA Noire. It's been kind of overshadowed in most GOTY discussions by epics like Skyrim and Uncharted 3, but it felt to me like it was just a few coats of polish away from perfection. Definately as ambitious as Deus Ex, even if it wasn't quite as fun as it or Batman and the new facial capture technology definately puts every other game to shame. Here's hoping it doesn't get totally ignored in the GOTY discussions.
