Battlefield 3, hopefully. I have the sinking feeling it will be Skyrim, which is the least deserving of the bunch (excluding MW3, which doesn't deserve any awards).
I'd love a reason as to why it would be the least deserving.

I ummm... I haven't played any of those. I'm guessing Skyrim. As for what I've actually played, I'd go for DE:HR, but that's just because I'm holding off on Skyrim. Partly because my PC can't run it...

Personally, I want Deus Ex: Human Revolution to win. It's a great RPG with a great storyline hampered only by the questionable design choices of the outsourced bosses.
They had a good base structure for the game, but IMO they failed at the highest points of attention, that is not only the boss battles but also the endings. I don't just mean the three choices where you lie into someone's pocket (or you take the fourth option and none of the things you did mattered in the grand scheme of things), I also mean the "little ending" after defeating the three bosses where you think most stuff has been resolved, but apparently the designers couldn't make up their mind and slapped on another finale.
They also did a bad job with actually characterizing the bosses outside of the actual battles, which just made them mooks more more health bars.

Again, I think DXHR was a very solid and pretty enjoyable ride despite some minor complaints here and there. But it failed when it was most important to shine, IMO.

Realistically, I think the following will win based purely on hype:

Best 1st Person Shooter: Modern Warfare 3
Best 3rd Person Shooter: Uncharted 3
Best Action/Adventure Game: Skyward Sword
Best RPG: Skyrim
Best Puzzle Game: Portal 2
Best Tech: LA Noire (category inevitably added for LA Noire alone)
Best Graphics: Uncharted 3
Best Multiplayer: Modern Warfare 3

Best Wii Game: Skyward Sword
Best XBox Game: Portal 2
Best PS3 Game: Uncharted 3
Best Portable Game: Super Mario 3D Land

Best Overall: Skyward Sword or Skyrim

damn..lol i'm not even gonna watch the award shows this year, that's a pretty solid list

Finally, why the heck is Portal 2 up there? Wasn't that released exactly one year ago from today? Anybody?
It was released in February of 2011. You want a reason we Novembergeddon? That is why. We tend to forget about everything that came out before around September and think it came out last year. See also Witcher II not being on that list. It feels like it already had its bite at the GOTY apple but didn't.
Touche sire, but you must agree with me on the grounds that trying to decide GOTY candidates right now will be most ineffective due to the hype generated by Skyrim's release and that these discussions are best saved for a later date where such hype has died down and the mist of rancor produced by new titles fades allowing for gamers to select the cream of the crop as the chosen GOTY with unmolested eyes.
This is one of the many flaws with GOTY, yes.

im sure i will be in the minority but i believe sonic generations was fucking awesome
Now I haven't had time to play Sonic yet, but it's on my to do list and if it's anything like Sonic 4 or Sonic Adventure 2 then I will love it. I played the demo and form that I am seriously impressed.

OT: the only game that has been released that I think would be competing for my personal game of the eyar that has been released so far is Deus Ex Human Revolution. Portal 2 was good, but there was too much filler where you needed to place one portal one place then just walk through it without a puzzle.

The games I am waiting for before I decide on my game of the year are not yet released (in Europe or on my preferred platform) those would be Saints Row The Third, Batman Arkham City, Professor Layton Spectre's Call, Super Mario Land 3D and Skyward Sword.

I kind of find myself hoping Skyrim doesn't win overall. Call me nitpicky or snobby, but I think we need to stop taking poor NPC animation out of the equation when it comes to critiquing games for this, and Skyrim's NPC AI and animation really got on my nerves. I'm really hoping Portal 2 takes it all. Valve's attention to detail and design really deserves to be recognized more. Of all the games I've played, theirs have consistently held my attention with the minimal amount of flow-breaking instances caused by poor animation or AI.

With how monolithic Bethesda is and how much money they threw at Skyrim, having NPCs standing stock-still with their arms to their side whether they're just standing there or having an argument is just sloppy. Square Enix started doing this ages ago with their NPCs, and Valve has damn near turned it into an art. We can do better than that, because we have done better than that.
I'm sorry but I have to disagree with you there. As someone who's been playing Skyrim and not just hyping over it, the interface, the atmosphere, the quests, the combat, and the gameplay in general were all vast, vast improvements over Oblivion, not to mention to sheer magnitude of the game.

Now, I loved Portal 2 and wouldn't mind if it won GOTY, but the reason Valve could polish it so much is because it's an 8 hour, linear adventure. They also didn't have to deal with human animation which is notoriously difficult, especially with thousands of different looking NPCs. There's nothing wrong with that, but if they had to tackle a huge, epic game like Bethesda does, they'd make a few mistakes to.

TL;DR: Slightly funky talking animation does not a bad game make. Stop trying to find reasons to hate Skyrim and enjoy it for what it is, even if you don't think it's the best game of the year.

I actually don't have a GOTY this year (I'm answering this question for myself since obviously many of these games will win GOTY from various sites). No game has particularly blown me away. I've loved a bunch of them--Portal 2, Deus Ex, Bastion, Uncharted 3, Dark Souls somewhat--but nothing stands out as the best of the best. Maybe Skyward Sword will, but that remains to be seen.

Just in past years I've been able to look back and say, "Yup, Red Dead Redemption/Shadow Complex/GTA4-Braid/Assassin's Creed was the best thing that came out all year"

Portal 2 still IMO, mainly because I've only put 20 hours in to Skyrim and it's way too early to make a judgement on it.

I agree with whoever said that the hype surrounding Skyrim and MW3 almost guarantees either of them GoTY though.

edit - honourable mention also has to go to The Witcher 2.

Because I dislike Skyrim, and this is a completely subjective question. Although, reading over the choices again, I dislike all the games EXCEPT Battlefield 3, so it's partly that, too.

I'm not finding reasons to dislike it. After years of playing Final Fantasy XI, which since 2003 has had emoting and gesturing NPCs and has been gradually improving and upgrading those gestures over the years, and playing through all of the Half-Life games I'm afraid my standards for that have been raised a bit. Anytime I see NPCs not moving their arms or body while they're talking I start wondering what on earth is wrong with them.

But what can I say? I'm an animation student spoiled on apparent frivolities such as attention to detail and gestures. That sort of stuff just rips me out of the experience, and makes me feel like I'm playing something from 1997. It's 2011, for God's sake. Heaven forbid we expect our big-budget games to be large AND be polished, rather than settling on one or the other. Don't get me wrong, the gameplay is fine. But that does not excuse what's not fine. Bethesda is known for this problem. People have been saying these things about their NPCs for a while now. It's not something they are unaware of, and it's not something they don't have the resources to fix.

This is just my opinion, anyway. There are aspects of it that probably deserve game of the year, but my personal scales are likely a bit different from the people who vote on that. Immersion and smoothness of play are my biggest things, and in those NPC encounters just ruined those for me.

I found Dark Souls to be the most polished and rewarding game yet (this year).

Uncharted 3: had an amazing story but worst gameplay of the series (the puzzles were neat though).

Skyrim : amazing world and character progression system but downright ugly textures (mostly stone, I mean flat cobblestone... comeon) and crude character animation pulled me out of the experience every time.

Portal 2 : nice story line funny characters and memorable quotes/jokes but the puzzles were way too damn easy... so it was every time I had no characters to listen to just boring.

Zelda : the third most interesting game here, and the third zelda game I played

Deus Ex : very nice story and gameplay feel if it weren't for the bosses it'd be number one^^ second best this year for now

Saints Row 3 : still pending~

There are still 2 months left in the year (counting this one). There is always a chance that something else "worthwhile" within these two months.
for now, my GOTY goes to either Portal 2 or Mortal Kombat 9.
And we're still waiting for Serious Sam 3: BFE. Whatever that stands for...

It's not my game of the year, but Skyrim will probably sweep the field. And I will yawn. Don't get me wrong, it's more engaging than I expected- I hated Oblivion- but I have gone from zero to "this is fun", whereas I loved Arkham City instantly and it stayed that way.

I'm more of a Mass Effect fanboy anyway, so my year finishes in March 2012.

Yeah...I found the gameplay to be an excellent marriage of new and old. I never would have thought a stealth/cover system from today would have worked so well for this sort of game.
Of course, it helps that the sneaky elements from the original were preserved.

I like the spy/agent-nature of the game, and the voice-acting was some of the best I've heard in a long while (ironically, except for Mr Jensen who sounds like he gargles gravel for a living). The plot...it has a strong basis, but an ultimately weak and predictable delivery.
I could even forgive the boss fights, despite how out of place they are (they're annoying, but ultimately really easy).

But the part I absolutely cannot forgive, is the ending system. We reach the climax of the story, and it completely falls apart.
And really, there was no reason for it to come apart at the seams at the end. The only things that absolutely had to be maintained in canon for all endings are:
1) The fall of the Illuminatti, or some way that allows for the Illuminati to fall before Deus Ex 1's timeline begins.
2) The introduction of the project that creates the Denton brothers. This isn't much of a problem, given how secretive the D Project would have been regardless of how Human Augmentation turned out politically.

Human Revolution well-exceeded my expectations, which so rarely happens these days in gaming.
However, that ending system pissed me off so much...ugh.

Well, SR:TT is getting awesomer reviews than most expected, but I think Skyrim will win it.
