I don't mind Cell shading, I play Team Fortress 2, that's got Cell-shading, and it's an awesome game. simple as that really.

I prefer Cell shading and stylization over realism anyway, that way I can actually play the game ten years later without grimacing at how bad the graphics look by comparison to current titles.

It's not really a big deal. It's possible that the visual aesthetic doesn't mesh with the game play, story, themes, etc. but I don't know enough about the game to judge it. And cartoonish looks aren't bad. The more basic the graphics, the more people that the characters approach in likeness. It can potentially immerse people more than spectacularly realistic graphics if it's done right.

The game looks very impressive, and the creators claim it to have over half a million unique weapons.
How does that work? Are they randomly generated Diablo-esque weapons? I can't imagine anyone producing that much content by hand.

He mentions it in this vid.

I've been fanboying over this game for over a year now, in many ways it looks too good to be true.

Otherwise it will be a cute Diablo 2 meets Fallout 3 game. At least this way it almost feels original.
Sorry, where is the downside in that sentence? Also, the fact that almost the entire planet and every weapon you find is randomly generated must add some originality to the game.

If you said variety, you'd be right, but originality - no. Generated content is invariably more plain than designed content would be in the same circumstances.

Yeah, because it's fair to say "We have over half a million guns!" when it's just

"We have like 8 guns, but infinite magic prefix and suffixes that affect your stats."

Falconer's hunting rifle of the Bear!"

+ stamina, + accuracy, + damage, etc whatever the shit, it's still just a hunting rifle.

Let's say every gun consists of seven pieces like stock, sight, frame, barrel, muzzle, feeding system, under-barrel accessory.
Further suppose there are seven alternatives for each component, distinguished from each other by looks and "+1" borefest stats.

This makes (technically) 823543 unique guns, while ten unique hand-designed guns would have more variety.

I actually don't see the point of Borderlands. In not one interview did they really say what you'll DO in the game. I heard quests, but all I saw in the video was shooting. Is that all you go around doing? Shooting? That's retarded. Fallout 3 is like my favorite game, cause it HAS a storyline, and you go around talking to people and making a name for yourself. Honestly, everything I've seen about this game involved talking about how many guns there are and montages about shooting things.
Could someone correct me please because I seriously doubt that this is the case

I really don't care about graphics.

I mean, yeah, if a game looks like a bad PS2 game on the PS3, I'm gonna be somewhat pissed, but I wont let that effect my entire opinion on a game like some people...yes you IGN

Personally, I love cell shading.

I don't equate cel shading with "inferior graphics" at all. Less realistic, yes, but to call them inferior implies that every game should look as realistic as possible, a claim I certainly dispute. Realism can add to immersion, especially when a game is set in a current-day setting, but it's not a requirement for a game to be good.
This.

I prefer cell shading alot of the time. Not for all games mind you. They can be highly detailes like Prince of Persia and and a realistic feel even though realism itself has been long forgotten.

No, not anymore. Back in the day graphics were a major deal breaker for me, but nowadays there are not really any games out there that don't look good. Newer games at least.

I buy my games based on the emotional experience.. So I'm not really qualified to answer this question.. :p But I think most people, whether they know it or not, do tend to avoid games that are of lesser visual quality than the games they grew up with. If that makes sense.

I like cel shading.

But as for the question, graphics do play a part in my decision process, but not a big one. The only game I ever returned because of graphics was Summoner...and that was in addition to the slow start, the somewhat non-intuitive gameplay, and the game freezing before I finished the first level.

i don't buy games anymore, thank you Gamefly, but graphics never stopped me from getting a game before and i kinda like cell shading

look at Okami, it has a hybrid of cell shading and artwork going in their graphics and the game is still great. Gamers are kinda like old people, we don't like change and cell shading graphics are just know getting widespread so it will take a while for people to start to stop bashing it. I've been following Borderlands since it was in develop and it's going to be a good game no matter the graphics. Any game that has half a million guns has something going for it

Hey, it doesn't matter as long as it was designed well. Well I mean that the game being beautifully developed from an artistic standpoint (Like Metroid Prime 3) is much more appealing to the eyes than the boring gritty, but well rendered, piles of rubble and bullets (Gears of War).

Here's my (lengthly) motto with graphics:

If the gameplay is good and it has nice graphics, great!
If the gameplay is good but the graphics are shit, you still have a good game.
If the gameplay is bad but the graphics are good, sell that piece of trash.
If the gameplay is bad and the graphics are bad, sell that ugly piece of trash.

Also, I don't see why people don't like cell shading. They don't hurt my eyes and they provide a fresh new atmosphere.
