Why don't you go to hell for pitting two different styles of MMO against each other. Both have things to make them great. WoW is always going to be on top of the standard hotkey MMO until its plug is pulled, GW2 is not made to go against WoW it is meant to go along side it. Since it has no subscription people can play both and your foolish need to validate the choice you made in gaming by proving GW to be better.
I have nothing against Guildwars and have an account of the original, though I rarely log on anylonger. I have a WoW account as well, but havent logged on it either in the past month or so. I favor WoW of course, but Im going to point out arguments that a lot of people will shout at you.
Going along WoW is I suppose a valid strategy for a Developer but probably not going to be a sucessful one. Whatever innovations it makes are not going to be radical enough to break it from being classified as a "Fantasy MMORPG" Thats three levels of genre it has to break through, regardless of what it offers. As long as you make a Fantasy MMORPG, it will be compared to the biggest Fantasy MMORPG ever, especially while it is still gaining momentum.
You're very right about the subscription and that may win a lot of people over, and get a few stradling both sides, but lets face it, MMOs don't like to share. They are built around giving a player a continuous stream of content they can be drowning in. Its why they all have grind. Their job as developers is to keep you playing as long as possible, giving you more and more you want to see, experience, and generally have fun messing with. While the price may affect a lot, the investment of TIME will stay the same, and many people will feel more obligated to spend their time in the game they ARE paying for. That may be because they think its a better game they have more fun in, or it may be because they feel they have to legitimize paying that 15 a month to themselves, or they aren't getting their money's worth. Over all, its hard to split your free time between two MMOs and feel you are getting the most out of both. It is DOable I suppose, but not for most people.
