I like to think that someday we'll get an MMO that's completely different that anything we've seen before, unfortunately no company is willing gamble that much money when they can get a safe return just making a WoW variation. Guild wars 2 will NOT outsell WoW in a million years, doesn't mean it won't be a massive success though, heres hoping :)
I do hope you realize that that's exactly what GW2 is trying to do: be an MMO that's completely different from anything we've seen before, and nothing at all like a WoW variation. They're the company that's willing to take that gamble.

I believe there is going to be one strong player base for guildwars2. Mostly since the darn game has, well, no actual subscription. Buy the game and your good. The player base should expand massively from that.

WoW isn't going anywhere anytime soon and proclaiming something the WoW-killer has never helped either.

I'd say WoW. WoW already got a solid base, it got monthly subscriptions rather than a 1 time payment. That monthly payment will make people play it for as much as possible just top get their money's worth, but with Guild Wars they can afford to relax.
WoW will remain bigegst because really, people don't want too much change, they just want to renew what they already got.

Simple, GW2 will loose, because its made by NCsoft. Look at all their games, they all failed to last, all for the same reason, lack of endgame content and support. They even managed to butcher Tabula Rasa with it.
It's not made by NCsoft, it's made by ArenaNet. Like the original GW, which has had quite a respectable level of both success and acclaim. NCsoft is only publishing it, and they're giving ANet pretty much complete freedom over development. They aren't even giving them a deadline.

Also, ANet has repeatedly said that the game will come out "when it's ready." They're going to polish the thing with a toothbrush before they let it out the doors. They've definitely been keeping an eye on the failures of previous MMOs, as evidenced by the fact that they canceled public beta tests planned for 2008 because they realized that most people view betas as demos now.
Well, in that case, lets hope they won't get pressured by NCsoft in any way. It would be great to have something fresh out there which isn't same bag of marbles under a different name.

Personally though, every time I see an MMO tag slapped near a franchise of my interest, I just turn the page. Played too much, too many, to care or have any hopes for the genre to change in any significant way. Saying it here just in case, so peopel dont think I'm a fanboy or a hater ;)

@EmperorSubcutaneus: you can't convince people with a costructed promo video like that. you need actual gameplay, like this: (jump at 2:00 for gameplay footage)

I voted GW2, but I know very well that WOW CAN'T JUST DIE. Too much advantage. But still, it's an old game, and it's getting stale and repetitive.

i think people have to rethink their standards when it comes to MMOs. NOTHING will ever be as successful as wow. This is not a bad thing, if the people who now play wow will turn to different games there will be room in the market for a few top dogs and a couple of small ones that can make a nice profit, better for the genre, better for the players.

Now our beloved videogame publishers just have to get into their sick skulls that wow was an exception, not the rule.

WoW sucks monkey asses, but it's far too successful to be defeated by a new MMO.

The MMO market is already pretty much done. Either you like WoW or you like other MMO's. If you like MMO's and you haven't at least tried WoW to see if you like it or not then you're screwed. And really, if you do like WoW chances are you're not going to like any other game.

No other game is as pandering, simple, and easy to get into. It's literally the Nintendo Wii of the MMORPG market. It's for casuals and hardcore fanboys. And nothing is going to pull them away from it.

I, however, am really excited for Guild Wars II. I know it's going to do well, but I stand by my thoughts that it will NOT be a WoW-killer. Besides, I don't want it to be one anyway-- that's all I need is a good game to be ruined by the same community that ruined WoW.
I wish I could report people like you for trolling.

I would love to play GW2, but my current system just couldnt handle it.

At the moment, I'm gonna have to stick with WoW.

Honestly? Nothing can or will kill WoW, it just cant be done.

But it should

It realllllllly should.

WoW is to the MMO market what a type writer is to microsoft word. It was dependable in its time and it had its glory days but it just needs to die now

No contest pretty much. MMO is pretty much a dead genre thanks to people trying to copy WoW and it'll keep on being that until they stop trying to work with the same basis and instead do a different kind of MMO.

Its not little Billy's fault if the kid behind him keeps getting bad grades for copying him.

I don't see it as a duel considering GW 2 has NO SUBSCRIPTION fees. They aren't fighting over money, most of the people I know in WoW are looking forward to GW2. I think they can both do well and thrive in their own way. WoW won't be dethroned but Guild Wars will still do damned well.

Im tired of defending an incoming game and stating that It will be a WoW killer. More than once have I done this only to be dissapointed by the obvious similarities and bland storyline. Then, samefully I crawl my way back to WoW, where all my friends are and dispite all its flaws its the most complete MMORPG game outthere.

World of Warcraft just has too many people too invested in it.

What would it take to make you give up on hundreds of hours of play time?

I once read that collectively World of Warcraft has a total play time of 500 million years or something like that. Perhaps a billion.

If a game were to come along that could topple that behemoth, I would play it too.

Established fan/user base vs new product or migrating players... Wow gets this in numbers, hands down. I don't think Arena Net want's to topple WoW, they just want their own users. I'm really eager to see what they release, and more so to try it.

A Tie

I will be buying GW2 quite simply because it looks great and that it will be free (subscription-wise).

However, because Battlenet will have it's own monthly charge soon in my country anyway covering all games (including WoW), it looks like I will be paying money to play WoW ANYWAY seeming as I must play D3.

Note I'm just talking from my own personal perspective.

No matter how "great" guildwars 2 may look. It won't cause a major dent in the wow playerbase. I myself have played wow for many many years. I will probably return to the game again at some point.

It is not because it is the best or most addicting game on the market. But when you decide to reactivate your account. You can be nearly certain that a large chunk of your friends is still playing.

I was quite the active raider and pvper and was always hunting for achievements. But I spend an equally large time just chatting with people and then I am not even mentioning realid which is truly brilliant. Being able to talk to my hooked starcraft friends and in the future diablo, woohoo!
