are you serious?

what a reflection on this moment in time that people have to wonder whether or not humans should have the right to feel feelings?

feelings and emotions coupled with free will of thinking is what makes us humans human! why do we need to question this?

Definitely a pursuit: without something to work for the human race will die.

Also, sweet avatar, mcgooch. Pink Floyd ftw!

The poll is not about whether or not you have the right to feel happy but whether you have the right to be happy all the time. I.e. if you're unhappy are you're human rights being breached?

Making it a right would mean that there would probably be a law made for happiness, as it would be constitutional. Then the government would HAVE to make everyone happy and some very weird things make people happy. That could be a good and bad thing but mostly bad. I'd love to have the government make me happy by doing whatever for me, but it's just dumb and really takes away the whole "working for it makes it even better once you have it" idea.

Yes, I believe he/she is serious.

...I do not understand this question or even what you're trying to get at, but okay.
Whatever tickles your fancy, dude.

I wouldn't say that's what makes humans human. Really, that's a quality of most species/organisms in the Animalia (Metazoa) Kingdom. ¬_¬
The thing is, humans question and question things because that's what we do and should do. Otherwise our culture, society, scientific research, exploration, religions, etc. would never move forward.

I think that this is a good conversation topic. Our history and modern day life would be completely different if that one part of the American Constitution were changed.
That's my two cents. :)

I never thought of it this way, but you're right and I agree with you, thank you for giving me this perspective. With so many people today being middle or upper class, or atleast not in poverty, and with all the modern technologies and conveniences we have, people expect to be happy. But it was quite the opposite back, say, in Medieval Times when most people were peasants, and expected nothing but to work and serve their lord. Happiness was a luxury, and people expect that to be changed now but it's not that easy. Happiness is something that has to be pursued, but as Mr. Jefferson said, everybody atleast has the right to pursue it.

People, who post a lot on this forum know me for being bitter, sad and pessimistic, but I'll tell you one thing: You can't be happy all the time, but you can be satisfied with your life. Hard work, exceedind your own imaginations about yourself,, reaching impossible goals and struggling in every minute of your life can bring you that, which is known as happiness to the few elite units in every generation.

Dare to become the Ubermensh, your wisdom knows no limits.
Unless you believe the Ubermensh to be a load of crap (as most people do). I suppose then, however, you can just be happy with your life, or strive towards that happiness.

I think people should pursue happiness, but they shouldn't absesse about it. Were not Epicureans after all. You can't achieve happiness forever, no matter what you do things are gonna make you stress and bring you down. All you can really hope for is fulfillment in what you do and moments of contentment.

You'd love to have the government make you happy? That means you want every other person of that nation to subsidize your happiness? We all know where this goes.

Equality in misery is no equality for me.

We have a right to the pursuit of happiness. That's what I believe. But you also have no right to interfere with anyone else's pursuit.

Haha well very good quote. There's nothing there I can refute!

Anyone who said it isn't deserved is just daft. I'm sorry but being happy is something everyone deserves. I mean maybe I'm being unrealistic, but in an ideal world would everyone be happy or off chasing happyness?

I dont think happiness can be classified as a right, because it cant really be taken away like most rights.
Its like saying consciousness is a right, happiness is a state of mind.

You answered your own question. Either you ignored it or don't fully understand what you said. Ideal worlds do not exist, so therefore we must live in this very pragmatic one. Because this is not an ideal world, happiness is not deserved. You have the RIGHT to go out and get it, however.

I deny your reality and substitute it with my own! But seriously, if you word it like that then I am forced to agree. But wouldn't it be nice if you were just happy?

Well that is certainly something I can wholeheartedly agree with!

God forbid I want happiness to be scotch free. =P
But you, you must be a saint. Good thing you were there to set me straight. Back to the road of goodness and peachy sunshine and selflessness.

Yes, I would love for the government to make me happy. It would make me... hum.. happy. Hurhur. But I wouldn't be the spoiled child that gets everything in the whole government-is-mommy-and-wants-to-make-you-happy-all-the-time theory because it's virtually impossible to keep anyone happy all the time and in this case it would be everyone in the United States. Once they're happy they'll be unhappy because they're happy all the time. Then they'll become some weird kind of masochist and I don't even want to see how that works out.
However, I digress. Having the government make you happy is wrong, I guess, to a certain extent. I mean, hey, they work hard to quiet the bitching already.
But (I'm assuming by your tone) your notion that no one should ever, ever want the government to make them happy all the time by fulfilling their every need/want/craving is just silly. Of course someone wants the easy life sometimes, but morally it's bad. Probably not good for our health either, haha. :]

Happiness is the state of being pleased with the way things are, and wishing for them to stay that way.
It's not a right, and for that matter, neither is cheap petrol. You can chase after either of them to your heart's content, though.
