It went too far with the Pyro update. And there is still no vanilla mode to fix it.
I'm sure you could find a server that plays vanilla only.

True, but all it takes is one person on the server to use the updates to ruin the experience.

I don't mind if those items are purely cosmetic. They're just bonuses. It annoys me, however, if those items offer even a bit of an advantage because anyone who didn't get the games won't get those items, and that breaks the balance.

An unfortunate problem inherent in the game is that you don't have the option of running a server without the new weapons and whatnot. Basically, the only way to play vanilla is to get everyone to agree to do so. Any enforcement of such a thing would have to be done by the players themselves.

You just have to hope Valve isn't going to pull the Rift shit again. If you bought Rift, you got "genuine" versions of the weapons. If you crafted them, you got the shittier versions of the weapons. As long as Valve doesn't pull that again, item-lovers, go nuts. I stopped playing TF2 long time ago.
Ummm, you realize that the only difference between the "genuine" version and "regular" one is the title, right? They have the exact same gameplay attributes no matter which one you use.

I have mixed feelings about the continued updates, though overall I'm still supportive of it. I don't really care about hats, but trying out new weapons is fun, especially since they're (mostly) pretty balanced. Because the weapons are sidegrades, it's not really an issue of "pay to win" if folks get them through the Mann Co. Store.

I do have one major issue with all these new items however; it can make gameplay a bit too unpredictable at times. Before the updates, it was easier to know how to deal with enemies because each class had its own distinct weapons that helped define its proper role on the battlefield. For example, Pyros were one of the worst classes for long distances due to the short range of their flamethrower and shotgun. That changed after the Pyro update, when the Flare Gun was introduced. Now you don't know if the Pyro's still weak at range or if he's going to snipe you with flare rounds.

A more extreme example is the Demoman. While engaging in melee combat was pretty much a last-resort strategy for players, now it's wholeheartedly encouraged with the various "Demoknight" items. These alternate playstyles are fun to use, but it blurs the line between combat roles for the classes, making it harder to adapt to what the enemy might throw at you.

Valve has been constantly tweaking and updating the game since the release (late 2007) with no extra charge or payment required from customers. That deserves my full respect. All pre-order items can by crafter after some time and they usually enhance the gameplay.

I could never ever complain about it.

It's funny how Valve constantly puts out brand new content at least once a month for free for a game that's been out for years while most companies forget about their games after a half a year and even when they do come out with DLC for them it costs like $15 and people want to complain about the free content.

Which they are... they're cosmetic. And the cool thing about the TF2 economy is that the weapons are worth considerably less than hats so if there's a weapon you want (which can give you an advantage) you can just craft it or trade it while the expensive stuff is no more than a status symbol in a sort of mini-game of seeing who can collect the most hats. The best part? You don't have to participate.

I have no problem at all with them introducing new content. They released it for free for the best part of three years and continued to do so. If people want to buy some hats then so what? Every weapon has its positives and negatives that balance out the game.

The more recent updates have even provided the community modders who made the items with around $40,000 in cash each. Can't see how that is a bad thing. http://tinyurl.com/62kys7x The fact that community modders seem to now be doing the bulk of the update work now means that the Team Fortress 2 developers are free to do whatever else it is they're working on, be it TF2 related or not.

Personally, I'd never buy an in-game item from the Valve store, but if a game I wanted to buy anyway - like Shogun 2 - has items then sure, why not include some and allow players to feel unique?

I think it has. The thing is one of the things I really liked about it initially is that each class had it's clearly defined roles and just like it's cartoony nature it was big and obvious. Now I feel that with the updates it has changed the way each class plays and they no longer have those roles. Maybe I'm just stupid and it's too complicated for my tiny brain but I don't like all the additions. I liked the pyro and medic updates because they didn't really change the style of play hugely but then shit like giving the demoman a sword just pisses me off.

Anyway, that's mostly why I stopped playing it. Also because there were some things that you just HAD to farm to get unlocked and I don't want to have to do that. It became like CoD where you have to unlock shit by playing for ages, but I liked the idea that somebody who doesn't play much like me was on an equal standing to everyone else from the get go.

The additional weapons and kits are great IMO,They add more difficulty to the game. But the silly hats you can get only by buying another game aren't fair. And they will become pricy as hell if you like them and want to trade for them :(

Pase in coint, max's head costs 6 earbuds, 1 earbuds costs 2 bills, and a bills hat goes for atleast 4-5 hats. a hat goes for 24 weapons if you are lucky. (1 refined metal)

There's a very good reason why TF2 has had not only a dedicated following, but a *large* one at that. The continued addition of new material has kept the game fairly new, instead of going the Counter Strike route and becoming irrelevant to anyone but the "hardcore" crowd.

As for the preorder stuff, as long as they are reskins of weapons and nothing more I have no problem with them. They're fun at times, and if Valve get some income that could be later used to make their great games, well, good for them.

the update and extras are awesome. valve continue to rock this title. so much free updates. its good service like this that prevents such an awesome game from turning into crap like the cod series. instead of just shitting one out every year like a sports game they have continued to service and maintain 1 game for at least 6 years now... truely awesome

It's good that there doing it for free, but soon they do need to stop and start fixing the various problems that came with the updates.

(and give us more hats..)

when it stops making money, ValVe is a company and a addon is cheaper to produce then a full game
