Never have and never will. Undoubtedly, there would be no shortage of other games I would eventually get. However, I'd rather get the console that interests me for multiple reasons as opposed to just because of one game.
I bought a gamecube for supersmash bros, that was the game that had me buy it but there were plenty of others that followed. I would say Vita, but I bought it with a few titles in mind.
No, but I'm very very tempted to buy the 3DS for Paper Mario: Sticker Star. I love that series; each Paper Mario game has such great, quirky humor and fantastic gameplay, and I believe the newest one will still have all that. Plus it seems like they made it a bit more challenging, which is one of the only things I would change about the Paper Mario games; they are just a bit too easy.
For one game, no, never. For me, in order to justify the purchase, there would need to be at least a few games worth my time before I would consider picking one up. Heck, I still wouldn't have a 3ds if one wasn't gifted to me, and there is quite a bit that I have played on that (I would maybe pick one up sometime early next year if I didn't have one already).
I'm tempted to get a WiiU for ZombiiU at the moment, although I do know that there are games coming out later that I'll want as well (Super Smash Bros, Zelda, Pikmin 3, Rayman Legends etc) so I'm not sure if that counts.
Yes, I bought a PS1 strictly for Tekken 3 and a PS2 for GTA III. Then I bought an XBox 360 and there were like a jillion great 360 titles, so I kind of lucked into that one.
Yes. I bought the xbox360 for the sole purpose of playing Fable II.
You read that right. FABLE II. Aw yeah.
I have others now, of course. I haven't played anything on that console for a while now though... had to tear apart the basement (where all my shit is) and I haven't had a change to put everything back together yet.
Last summer, Sly Cooper: Thieves in Time got announced, so I got myself a PS3 in anticipation. Of course, I got other games for it to pass the time. 1.5 years worth of time. It's like a time thief. A thief in time.
Nope. I will though if I can find another game as amazing as Half-Life 2, Portal, Super Metroid, Metroid Prime, or something as addictive as Super Smash Brothers Melee.
Does the Pokémon series count as one game? Because Pokémon were pretty much THE reason for me to get a DS. But there was more than one title on the system, even discounting version X/Y splits.
Yes, a couple of times (though I usually buy used or refurbished if I'm going strictly for one game, the only exception was the wii).
Wii - Super Mario Galaxy (I played through most of the game at the demo console at my local Gamestop, to be honest; I finally broke down and got the console hoping some other good stuff would come out).
Dreamcast - Jet Grind Radio (picked it up the system a couple of years ago; also got it because the dreamcast is just cool)
Xbox 360 - The Dead or Alive series (been a huge fan of it for years; it has more than just jiggle physics)
I also did some major upgrades to a computer once just so I could play portal.
Not me, but I think my brother actually bought an Xbox 360 for Blazblue. That's the first game he got on it and it didn't come with the system so I assume that's why he bought it.
I bought an Xbox just for Halo CE.
I also got a 360 just for Mass Effect, which a few people have already admitted to.
It's strange to think of it, but I didn't have games in mind when I got my PS1, PS2 and PS3, although the vast majority of games I've bought are for those three systems. Actually, scratch that. I bought my PS1 for the first Spyro. No regrets.
the title reminded me of something I had almost forgotten. I bought an Xbox and a copy of Halo back when it was new, since everyone seemed to agree it was the best thing since sliced bread. I had never been so underwhelmed by any console Ive owned, and Ive owned many. It looked like a hunk of junk. And that feeling applied to the game too. It had been along time since I played a halfway decent FPS (hardly any were ever released for the playstation2.) I immediately returned everything and iirc, got a full refund. I ended up working at that videogame shop for a year or two as it turns out.
I also bought a Gamecube specifically for Zelda. Luckily I ended up getting two of those, and two metroids which were ok, and an awesome resident evil, so that one actually worked out great.
I got the original Xbox to play Knights of the Old Republic, Metal Gear Solid 4 was the deciding factor in getting a PS3 if that counts, and I will absolutely buy a Wii U if the Yoshi's Land rumor turns out to be true just to play it.
Buying a console just for one game? No.
Buying a console because I want to play one particular game and then get all the other games that interested me? All of them.
I bought my PS2 for Jak and Daxter.
I bought my PS3 for Uncharted (What can I say, I'm a Naughty Dog fan).
I bought my PSP for Daxter (I smell a trend here...).
I bought my Vita for... wait for it... Persona 4 Golden (Surprise!)
And I bought my DS for NSMB.
One game made me buy those systems, but I always had other games in my crosshairs even before I bought them
