It's a very defining decision: Do you play a deep thoughtful story with defining characters? or Do you play to see what all you can do to the world?

It's plagued us all for what seems like the beginning of gaming itself, and we've had to answer it ever time we went to the store with the intent of getting a new play-thing.

The obvious schism: GTA or Saints row.

These show one type of game, that leads to two very different games in the aspect of what you do and how serious you take it. Saints is a happy-go-lucky type game where you goof off until the room starts spinning and your hands turn purple. GTA takes itself seriously regardless of what you do(as funny as it may be), your story is involving with a twisted sense of realism in which you run over old ladies with the purpose of getting to the next mission.

So now give what and why and thanks and goodbye*.

1) Games are more than these two factors
2) They are not mutually exclusive
3) Even if they were, you don't have to choose. You can have both, just buy the two games.

I agree. I play a mixture of these games.

I prefer 'mind' I think... although I really don't think that you've explained it very well. I liked the GTAIV story because it didn't end well, I just find that to be so much more realistic than the 'you own the whole fucking world' endings of vice and san andreas.
I will stick with a generally *broken* game if the story is good enough, that is why I gave up on Final Fantasy XII. I hated the way that it had taken two MMORPG shots to the mouth but stuck with it because the story was interesting, however a few stupid decisions on the part of the writers (both non-sensical actions and generally bad plots developments) later and I hastily turned it off.

1)I never said it was just these two I said it's a large factor(very large)(extremely large)
2)they arn't but it's how you play and should there be a mix that is the most pleasing thing, but quite a lot of developers can't seem to fit both in.
3)you could buy both but then you have two eerily similar games that both make you choose between them like choosing black and white because someone forgot to bring the gray

Also I meant it in a matter of preference.
