im doing a media project where i have to make up the question, and ive chosen the constant link between music lyrics and the glorification of crime.
now, being a heavy metal listener i have biased views, so im automatically gonna presume that hip-hop culture is gonna be more violent, so i want other peoples views
so debate people, which is the more violent? Metal music, or hip-hop?
Metal. Definitely metal. Rap just glorifies it.
Good way of concluding the argument, actually. I tip my metaphorical hat to you. :p

Not that i have masses of experience between the two but i've found that heavy metal music is usually much more about adding loads of effects to the instruments and having some sort of 5 minute solo that takes up most of the song. Whereas hip hop generally involves alot less instruments and alot more empthasis on the lyrics therefore allowing more violent messages to come through in the words of the song.

Metal - More violent to watch
Hip hop - More violent if you pay attention to the lyrics

As for the glorification of crime i'd say niether do it perticularry well and that rap would be the prime type of 'music' that glorifies crime.
agreed

Well if you can actually UNDERSTAND what they are saying in metal you can hear some pretty violent crap. But I do believe less metal rockers have been killed than rap artists but maybe not.

It depends on what kind of metal. Death/Gore metal usually talks about raping and killing. Slayer has songs about a Global Nucular Holocaust. Thats more violent then gangs. Although Metal is more about the power of violence...not the joy of the act. Id say Rap.

Really i cant understand most metal bands are singing/screeching. I do understand what theyre chanting about in rap.

Interms of how ever is more violent thats a hard call, I would jsut like to see the numbers of songs that have violent verses in them.

now, it seems i have been reported for presenting a confusing topic, even though everyone else seems to get the point except this guy, so imgoing to clear things up for the justification of this discussion:
1:yes my topic could be considered general, but i do need to write a large essay, so if it was too specific i would not be able to write as much
2:im asking simply, which of the music genres you would consider most violent in nature, hence the poll
3:for the people who are referencing lyrics, great, that input is going to help further research

now thats as far as im gonna go, im reading all this feedback with great pleasure, impressive shizz
keep up the posts

It's a stupid question.

Neither are violent, but both have violent idiots listening to them. One evokes anger and aggression melodically, the other lyrically. The end result is the same, stupids belting the piss out of each other and being dragged away by police.

So you could argue that the most violent music out there is Stupid.

not quite what i was looking for... but ok, i see where you coming from, but, the "stupid people" could be easily influenced by music and such television shows, so i wouldnt say that theyre just dumb, id say theyre dumb and influenced by the media, in my case the music

They both had their fair share of violence, but that doesn't mean they're both always violent. I have no idea about hip-hop, but metal is most certainly more than just violence.

Take these following bands for example. You've got:

You've got lyrical content ranging from:
Rooster
Ain't Found A Way To
Kill Me Yet
Eyes Burn With Stinging
Sweat
Seems Every Path Leads Me To
Nowhere
Wife And Kids And Household Pet
Army Green Was No Safe Bet
The Bullets Scream To Me From Somewhere

Here They Come To Snuff The Rooster
Yeah Here Come The Rooster
You Know He Ain't Gonna Die

Walkin' Tall Machine Gun Man
They Spit On Me In My Homeland
Gloria Sent Me Pictures
Of My Boy
Got My Pills 'Gainst
Mosquito Death
My Buddy's Breathin'
His Dyin' Breath
Oh God Please Won't You Help
Me Make It Through
Angel of Death
Auschwitz, the meaning of pain
The way that I want you to die
Slow death, immense decay
Showers that cleanse you of your life
Forced in
Like cattle
You run
Stripped of
Your life's worth
Human mice, for the Angel of Death
Four hundred thousand more to die
Angel of Death
Monarch to the kingdom of the dead
Sadistic, surgeon of demise
Sadist of the noblest blood

Destroying, without mercy
To benefit the Aryan race

Surgery, with no anesthesia
Feel the knife pierce you intensely
Inferior, no use to mankind
Strapped down screaming out to die

And finally, you've got attitudes ranging from:
[link]http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UUXBCdt5IPg[/link]
[link]http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kciiQX7xJzc[/link]

So there. There is obviously violence in the metal genre. What most people fail to realize is that metal is not all about violence.
I'm sure it's the same way with hip-hop.

I think metal is more violent, and it pushes more boundaries than hip-hop, but hip-hop glorifies crime more.

I mean metal lyrics, "You'll be the death of me, baby you're my home sweet homicide!" "I put this noose around my neck, could you get to me in time? I've got no reason left to live, but a hundred to die. I point my hands up to the sky, but now I know that god is a lie."

Frankly I don't know any hip-hop lyrics.

P.S. I am also a biased metal listener. What you classic metal fans would call "A new age pussy"

I reckon metal can be more violent, however, people are lesss likely to act violent from metal. Hip hop isnt as violent, but talks alot about violence and alot of violence comes from it. Evidence i.e. 2pac's death.

Ice-T "kill the cops" for example. it openly encorages murder and sodomy and promotes it as being "cool" whilst Metal is about aggression and emotion as the source of violence.
so your saying that metal is violence with emotion, while rap/hip-hop is casually encourage these acts?

i see that too, seems that the escapist has taste!
just kiddin, but i would appreciate any hip-hop fans to come up with some feedback
any hating will not be tolerated, i cant stand some hip-hop personally, i think that modern hip-hop is pointless, but i also agree that metal can be seen as over the top violent too, which is why im posing the question to forum users, their must be some divide in there somewhere people

metal music, atleast the music i listen to, may talk about crime, but it rarely glorifies it.

hiphop, on the other hand, aims towards all those wannabe 'gangstas' and makes a point of glorifying it

..or maybe thats rap im thinking of,

so all in all, im guessing a majority of you think hip-hop is the most glorifying, whereas metal is seen as more violent in nature
and heavy metal is more doing it due to emotion, and hop-hop is because its "cool"
